Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

All the I'll just build a PC comments.....and yet you will do the exact same thing on that. Upgrade your GPU every 2-3 years which is about the cost of a console

While juggle three different gaming clients (uPlay, Steam, Origin) with three different ecosystems and consistently switching between two different control schemes (kb+mouse & gamepad) just to play all the third party games.

You might do this, which is fine but most people who use a console with one ecosystem, unified OS and one control method to access and all third party games with a touch of a few buttons are not. The accessibility consoles are not going to magically appear on PC.

That's the thing though. The old model will still be supported with content -- just like the old model(s) of iOS devices.

Hence why I pretty much said in my previous post (on the first page of this thread) that compatibility will greatly determine how well this plan will work out.

They've got to keep the OG PS4 backward and forward compatible. Especially since Phil said MS would be doing that.

Not happening sorry.

With the success of the PS4 its would be foolish ....Concentrate on a PS5 and release Q4 2019.

Ok medium I can believe on an older GPU. Guess what? The PS4 IS that older GPU on medium setting. Or people can upgrade their console and get the PC equivalent of high setting.

No one is forcing people to just throw their PS4 in the garbage
Besides games could be perfectly compatibles. Yo have the PS4 for 250 dollars and run the games at 720p 30fps,and you have the PS4+ for the hardcore at 599 dollars and run the games at 1080p 60fps or 4K 30fps.
People must think 14nm is going to stay for a while, look at 28nm GPUs,this time will be longer to jump to a smaller process and the sooner you launch a GPU in that process the longer you will stay in the market with a competitive product.

This is as good as confirmed, considering Patrick is the author of this report. There's a reason he has the nickname Scoops, and he would not even touch this story if he hadn't thoroughly vetted it first.

To the people calling BS, I'm sorry, but you are very, very likely wrong -- for better or worse.

Agreed this is probably in the works but that does not mean it will ever be released it could be transitioned into the next machine, PS5. If it does release as an upgrade to help devs with their VR games which I suspect is the reason there fishing for more power they absolutely must and I mean MUST have some sort of trade in/ upgrade incentive for current PS4 users the install base is entirely too high to just say buy our upgraded PS4 for $600. The backlash could be enough to cripple the brand. 34 million angry customers would be not be a good look.
Something along the lines of, Trade in your PS4 and get a PS4.5 for $250 could work but even that would be pushing it.

I do wonder how much power there talking and which GPU they would go with.

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
Are you FUCKING kidding me? I just got a PS4 a few months ago, and you're telling me that it may already be obsolete?

Doesn't make sense when you consider the technical hurdles, price point, and the current successful trajectory of PS4.

If true then why a better GPU? Why not the CPU has been causing all the problems?

But hey better graphics am I right? That's what matters more.

As a PS4 owner with no intention of buying a new platform besides PSVR and the NX (maybe...), I'd be furious.

Why? If its a 4.5 you'd still be getting the same games for your PS4 that you were already going to get. What would you be furious about? I don't see how this would be any different than the new 3DS, you'd be able to count the total number of PS4.5 only games on 1 hand, some games would run better on the new hardware.

I literally JUST got done setting up my new 1080p tv because I was happy with coasting with the PS4 and its 1080p gaming for the next 4 years.

I mean...

fuck

I guess I'd be fine with it if it meant a fps boost for 1080p tvs.

Im not really fully onboard with the idea of spending say £350 every few years just to maintain console gaming - it just comes to a point where I might just as well go PC which already has that and was one of the reasons I moved over to console gaming in the first place.

I still dont see how this really fits into the normal dev cycle (every sequel on a new hardware target?) and indeed the efficiencies borne from matured hardware as well as improved software/SDKs etc.

To me its a tough sell, but Ive outgrown the need to change my phone every year because fashion/the crowd dictates I should.

VERENDUS ? WHERE ARE YOU?

Preparing the information dump for his leaked new Suikoden game on PS4 probably :^)

I get the feeling a lot of opposition here is:
1. Concern that games won't work on the original PS4. But why would a software developer do this? Why would they wall off most of their market potential when supporting both is extremely trivial? This isn't releasing for 2 platforms. This is using APIs to change settings and then test that performance is acceptable for both. A couple more years of dev time, and a few years of technician time. Not 200 more years of dev time.
2. Games won't play as good as people with the newer PS4. PC gamers already do this.

The opposition is coming from the fact it contradicts everything Sony has said, and the fact that it'd be super damn expensive

Why are people saying they wasted money on PS4?

Just because a luxury item exists doesn't mean you have to buy it, or even need it. Jesus, I don't spend 3k on PCs because that is way too much for me, but I don't hate on those that do, or feel like I am getting a worse experience.

I mean, does the fact that Ferrari's exist make your daily driver worthless?

Sounds like bullshit to me. Especially since Sony has been pushing the concept of every PS4 being the same as a major selling point to developers for PSVR at GDC

Good thinking.

My guess is if there is a revision it would only be for 4k Bluray Jeff Rigby type stuff and not anything to do with game performance.

This would put me off consoles and pretty much ensure I stayed with PC from here out. The entire point in a console would be made redundant. Do not want.

Those of you posting about how this is bullshit should probably read the entire article before commenting!

Jason what's your personal, non Kotaku-related, speculation on this?

Do you think the reasoning for this is because of VR, or in response to NX?

I'd actually be kind of mad if they would do this.
I don't like this idea at all for any console. (Recently with the N3DS, pretty annoying).
I really hope this is not true.

Because this is when some games start only coming out for the new iteration ala N3DS

Until that happens or is confirmed though, we should be excited about the potential opportunities. Sony has done some crazy things, but they aren't stupid enough to fragment the enormous PS4 base they're building.

I don't think they'd make the same mistakes of the N3DS by making software that ONLY runs on the upgraded version.

As primarily a PC gamer who is used to iterative hardware upgrades, I'd like to say to you all:

"Welcome! We've been expecting you for quite sometime!"

Lashley

Why does he wear the mask!?
Sigh.

I may as well go to PC. I wonder if those who were calling Microsoft for considering this will do the same to Sony?

You really think that the original PS4 will be the priority for optimization after an upgrade or two happens? I'd imagine on the original PS4 after a few years we'd see most games in a situation similar to those call of duty last gen ports that actually look visually worse than the ones that came out with the 360 as a priority. We definitely won't have games like Halo 4 or God of war Ascension that squeeze every ounce of power out of the PS4 7 years after it came out if there's a PS4.5 or even PS4.75 that are the priority for most developers

Dude the priority for a developer is going to be reaching as much of the userbase as possible...

You really think that they're gonna alienate 40mil+ users??

Also what makes you think having stronger hardware prevents the weaker version from being maxed out?????

All i'm seeing in this thread, is "I don't want ppl to have better stuff than me" and then trying to rationalize it with theories so ridiculous, only a company that wanted to go bankrupt would even try it

This makes sense if they make the extra power only for 4K output, and not for the baseline games. Essentially, forcing compatibility w/ OG PS4s, but letting the high-end market have access to crazy graphics if they want to shell out for it.

Don't expect them to actually do it but I guess that Sony Exec was joking.

I really don't see these "enhanced" consoles doing to well.

Going to need a them good upscaler for that 4K output

Yeah this is sounding like someone got the info mixed up and this is just early plans for PS5.

Or maybe the PS5 will be more iterative in nature?

I think these companies are going be to done with starting from scratch every generation. It's way too risky.

I honestly do not get most peoples logic.

They will buy a new phone every year or two but it's a disaster if Sony or MS does it for consoles.... 3-4 years later?

Technology is taking a huge leap forward soon with HBM... It would be FOOLISH if Sony and MS didn't capitalize on it. They are forced to put out a new unit. If Sony doesn't, MS would and Sony risks losing user base.... and vice versa.

It makes even more sense for Sony since they are release PSVR later this year.

Cliché.

Even if this rumor is legit, he's not going to spill the beans about the project in the PSVR presentation.

What i'm thinking, if there is any truth to this, then it's an end of the generation solution that Sony is thinking of. Basically instead of buying a new console you could just buy an upgrade for the PS4. The Kotaku rumor even says that it appears to be an exploratory situation right now. So it's not something set in stone or something that's going to happen any time soon.

Since this is Patrick Klepek reporting this, I'm inclined to believe it. But no way in hell will a new PS4 play games at 4k.

Patrick Klepek broke the Infinity Ward stuff and Microsoft's backtracking on always online Xbox One. He doesn't make shit up.
