Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

October 2015
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/high-power-ps4-model-something-sony-might-consider/1100-6431669/

Ito said because the PS4 uses X86 architecture (unlike the PlayStation 3's Cell processor), improvements to performance can be made over time. However, Ito stressed that Sony has no immediate plans to introduce a technically superior PS4 model; he also explained that the bigger question is if Sony would actually want to do this at all.

He said releasing a higher-power PS4 model alongside the existing one is an idea that "might be considered

Two years from now would make the PS4 five years old, which would be around the time of a normal console cycle, so if it were going to happen that would be a good time. But now? It makes no sense. They're about to launch a $400-500 peripheral. No one is going to want to hear anything from them about another console or upgrade any time soon.

The article don't specify a date though. And giving the fact that this new model would probably be VR ready (so, no need of that extra box) and we're getting the VR this year that would mean no new model until at least later next year.

If this is true then I expect a white one for free as a trade in. If not then Sony don't be daft. This is not good to fragment your user base

I guess some dont get it, with x86 it will be like a high spec pc and a low spec pc, both play the same games but a different graphics quality.

Nothing will be fragmented.

Maybe instead of getting defensive, you could acknowledge that the article adds a significant amount of padding to some bare-bones rumors.

The opening statement is:

But then you go on to say:

So, a big part of this is that you make an extremely strong supposition. After all, 'PS4.5' implies that the hardware will be iterative but won't actually be a generational leap. It carries with it all sorts of implications, and since you already admitted you're not sure if it's an official name, a nickname, or maybe just an internal nickname given by Sony, the whole thing kinda falls apart, doesn't it?

And then your story ends with this:

"Exploring the possibility" is a little bit of a backpedal compared to your bold title of "Sony is working on Playstation 4.5" and your bold opening statement, isn't it?

Perhaps this is why some people are leery.

But no. No, the only people calling bullshit are those who didn't click your article...

Nice breakdown.

We have a saying in Hosein Abad : It doesn't rain because the black cat says so !!

The whole thing is fake , sony is not going to jeopardize their god astonishing ps4 sales by some half-dim-wit ideas like this .

Ohh man, thanks for this. For a moment I thought a company could be evolving its business strategy in an effort to gain more profits and save their struggling bottom line. Cerny, Shu, Kaz, and that darned british guy are all half dim wit though, so that's like a 2x full-dim-wit since their powers combine Captain Planet style. Together they couldn't possibly come up with a half-dim-wit idea, instead we are getting VR at a fixed spec.

So close to ruining everything.

I blame the british guy if it goes wrong, they are always the villains.

Well, if this is the way of the future for consoles... why the fuck even buy consoles? You can get a PC, customize it to be more powerful, and it's not like having a console means you can use it for years or won't have to worry about whether it will play the latest games or if it says PS4 it works on PS4.

What possible reason would you have to even put yourself in a system where you have to pay for MP, you are at the whim of what hardware they decide to give you (and you know they are going to cheap out somewhere and it's not going to be much cheaper than make your own), you still have to worry about if you have the right device, and developers don't even have to try to optomize much anymore cause they can just require you get the newest console. Where in the world is the advantage to a console then?

Console exclusives, to an extent, is the only reason to stay with consoles. But otherwise, I agree with you for the most part.

At this point I'd just say kill this generation and move on. Both systems are just very weak. Can't reliably do 1080p 60fps, nevermind 4k at any frame rate.

Aside from the slight bump in power, there's not much to differentiate them from last gen. Well that's not true. A lack of games has been differentiated this generation from earlier generations. The best games that I've played this generation have been ports of last generation games.

kill your system when it's on track to sell 100 million brehs

4k will not run well at the PS4's price point.

I guess that doesn't mean much considering 1080p usually aims for 30fps now anyway, but still, there's no "upgrade" that would actually allow this unless you're bridging two Titan X's and taping them to the top of the console. The heat output would be enormous.

Try running Battlefront at 900p and 60 fps on a Radeon HD 7850 which is the closest GPU we have compared to the PS4 GPU.

The PS4 CPU also runs at just 1.6Ghz. Good luck running anything on PC at 1.6 Ghz.

You should also look into the insane markups on Nvidia GPUs. They make hundreds of dollars in profit off of them.

Well of course I don't think they will pack in a 980 ti. Of course it would be a special design by AMD without the crazy markups. I'm just talking about raw GPU power it takes to render games at 4k. Combining it with the small form factor of a console (with mostly cheap 80mm fans) ... I don't see it.

The trash CPU of modern consoles is another problem but resolution is a GPU problem first and has nothing to do with the CPU.

Also: The 7870 runs BF4 at Ultra settings in 40fps average in 1080p. 60fps in 900p shouldn't be a problem at medium settings

I'm still kind of in shock that so many are ignoring how much of an improvement 4k games are.

That shit isn't PS4.5

Thats straight next gen. Hence why I don't believe this rumor at all.

This is what I'm thinking.

PS4.5 is still PS5. It is meant to be the successor to the previous playstation console before it.

The only difference is that there is overlap with both consoles in the beginning, sharing the same games and peripherals, until PS4 is phased out.

So something like this

2013 (PS4 is announced. PS3 is replaced) -------- 2017 (PS4.5 is announced. Shares the same games with PS4) ------ 2022 (PS4 is phased out. PS4.5 takes over)

That's not a bad timeline except 2021/2022 would be PS5. As I said before I am ok with a shortened console cycle so long as BC and support is offered to the previous gen still. At this point most just want the current games to run better at 1080p with better IQ and a PS4.5 and X1.5 could do that and it would not disrupt the current market much. Annualizing though can go kick rocks as that is a terrible idea for consoles.

Speculation: This move is an attempt to sucker MS into going full-steam ahead with Xbox 1.5, and when they announce it, Sony will announce that, Surprise!, they never really had any concrete intentions, it was just something they were thinking about, and they would never do that because it would split the userbase and they are "for the players". Once again the result paints MS as the bad guy and makes Sony look like some benevolent caretaker of the industry.

If this is where console gaming is headed, there won't be any reason to not get a PC instead.

Except exclusive games, of course, which Sony still has.

An more powerful ps4 that can play any ps4 game? Sign me the fuck up today.

A brand new PlayStation platform already? Not interested, this gen has been too lackluster as it is and I would just transition to purely PC gaming.

IMO an updated ps4 makes sense. Sony would be hilariously stupid to move on from The "ps4" brand name. With a product this successful you ride that wave for as long as possible.

How much are they going to sell the new version then? The PS4 still isn't exactly cheap.

The hardware wars truly begin.

I believe this is all instigated by Microsoft. They goofed the XB1 and are gonna replace it with something much better. Sony either come along for the ride or the PS4 becomes the "weak, under-powered console".

Fantastic news for consumers IMO. Yummy!

We say this in the entire country tho :p

And I would love for this to be false but Kotaku's history is (unfortunately) really solid with leaks and stuff.

A 4K caliber APU would be pretty cool.

I just don't believe it can be made for consoles that sell at ~$399.

I love this idea of upgrades like smartphone do. I welcome this news with a big smile on my face !

Having to wait 6+ years for a new console with better specs is something i always hated. As long as these upgrades are forward and backward compatible, i'm all for it !!!

If you hated it, why didn't you just buy a PC where you could just buy upgrades as you need it?

Sounds like consoles weren't really the device you wanted anyways if you hated waiting for upgrades every 6+ years.

That is the reversal of the DRM. When you posted "fiasco" the impression is that you're talking about MS originally going the DRM route for the Xbox One. I believe that was initally revealed by EDGE.

I would say the Xbox One doing a complete reversal was a fiasco. And if you knew he broke that story then you surely would have understood what I meant and needn't have tried to correct me.

Edit Didn't realise you weren't the first person who replied to me. Sorry!

Kleptok rides again. Well, at least this might give smaller studios more work to go around porting PS4.5 and Xbox One.1 games to the current boxes.

Still, hard to imagine this was the game plan for either company going into this generation.

Sounds like bullshit to me. Especially since Sony has been pushing the concept of every PS4 being the same as a major selling point to developers for PSVR at GDC

psvrl3st3.png

When they release a new console, the old one's won't be replaced. They are still the same.
