Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

So you are saying that they will release this before the end of the year and that it will offer 4K. For games.

Then those games are probably indie because I do not see any way to sell a console that could offer this performance at AAA level without reducing the detail of the games.

It will probably have 4K support as an output but I do not think you should expect your AAA games to run at 4K
unless they are literally going to sell the cutting edge for a huge loss because else you would be looking at a 1000 euro manufacturing price so a bit like the PS3.
And even then you would get 4K with 30fps because it just costs so much horsepower to even run it at 30FPS let alone 60 fps.

Just go all the way and make a PS5 you assholes. Even then it's too early for that.

Ugh. So long as all the games for that console. Up till PS5 continue to work.

If not I'd be looking at abandoning consoles as a day one'er

A lot of folks don't want to deal with complexity. Like needing to think about what the min reqs are and if my spec's are up to snuff (CPU/GPU naming conventions definitely dont' help).

So if you introduce PC like complexity on the console it breaks one of the core reasons the console market exists and is big.

Also I break all my computers with pornos.

My consoles haven't broken from pornos.

I'm trying to spell out phonetically the sound I just made when I read this, but the best I can come up with is "Eccchhhhhh." Don't think I have enough Cs.

In an environment that is backwards/forwards compatible, how does that matter? Devs release it for whatever target they are ready for at the time of release and it works as-is on next gen hardware.

Because you'll end up with the worst performance if you don't upgrade.

So? What'll be the difference? So what if the developers now have to account for a higher end console? They have to do that for an insane amount of permutations for PC's right now if they're releasing the game there. So now they have to account for 2 or 3 hardware revisions for a console.

This is not a PC. I buy a console so I don't have to worry about this.

If this is true (and I feel more and more like it is) then why all the "closed system" and "you know what every user has in their home" comments they threw at the developers during the VR presentations.

From a "I got my PSVR preorder secured" high to a "not like this" low within 2 days.

Maybe it will be okay in the long run but my inital gut reaction is definitely not happy.

makes more sense than slim consoles

Maybe but they might want a lower price point offering. I suppose the other option is phase out old console at lower prices while introducing new console which would solve that. Focus R&D on new products instead of slimming down old stuff.

... And you still don't have to worry about this. If you own a PS4 its going to keep playing PS4 games, exactly as it was before this comes out. Nobody is going to abandon 40+ million PS4s to make new PS4 only games. Just like nobody abandoned the 3DS when the new 3DS came out.

Like the MS rumor, I am not surprised. Helps them both move to a 3-4 year release course rather than 7-8.

The question is who will be out with details and a console first, what specs, and what prices.

If this is a completely new system and not just an add-on to upgrade the PS4 I can't see how this would be a good idea considering the large install base PS4 already has. It's like throwing away money to buy a brand new PC each time instead of just upgrading the inner components.

I had a PS4 and didn't think the exclusives + PS online subscription were worth it.
I had an Xbox and was disappointed by the system as well and didn't like the direction console games were going.

I looked at my PC and it did virtually everything the consoles did and better and with the push of MS getting their Xbox games onto PC and even some PS4 games like No Man's sky.

For me, focusing on PC and whatever Nintendo pushes out just makes perfect sense. This isn't me being PC elitist, it's just the way things are heading.

But these reasons have nothing to do with the topic here really.

People are reacting about a plaform having a upgrade path..... by flocking to a platform that has a existing upgrade path. Moveover, at least if we are talking AAA releases, to keep the same level of performance on PC over the length of a generation, you HAVE to buy new hardware.

I understand being upset, but the reactionary posts are silly, least on that front.

I must admit, as soon as I heard about MS' 3 OS system, I thought this was what that would lead to. Their ability to pull off full system BC on their system supports that as an avenue forward.
Just think how many complaints there were/still are about lost system functionality from PS3 -> PS4.

Imagine a PS5 that's essentially just an upgraded PS4, inheriting all the media support and apps from the previous system.

I don't expect the short HW refresh cycles of mobiles, and I'd be incredibly surprised if this came out this year. But a 4-5 gen cycle isn't too bad IMO.

It's strange to be hearing about a new console/upgrade before we even get a significant price cut from Sony though.

And why are people welcoming a hardware revision for consoles every 2-3 years that cost about maybe $100-399 for the upgrade?

I'm in college and 1 year feels pretty fast... Just yesterday, I felt like it was August when its already March. Time goes by so dang fast to me. Before I'll know it, it will be freaking June.

So optional hardware upgrades really only appeal to... what? Spending more so your games run as best they possibly can. How isn't this a slippery slope as years go on?

Now you can upgrade your PS4 instead!

Because they are going to feel peer pressured into upgrading when they really do not have to until they are ready. It is not going to affect me one bit and I will enjoy my PS4 all the same. Just as I will my Xbox One. By the time I am ready to upgrade, new systems will be waiting and I'll rinse and repeat until I am ready again.

if they don't have to upgrade to play new games, it sounds like a personal problem. tech gets upgraded fast all the time, because it finally happens to a console people throw a fit?

sell your ps4s, upgrade for cheap. that's my plan.

What really great games we had on PS4 to justify its existence ?
Uncharted 4 comes this May and it looked amazing, why would anyone think about an upgrade now and every two-three years?

People are afraid that the game will not get optimized for PS4 [run worse than they are now].

Personally, I am not bothered by that. Devs will know that they have to serve the large userbase with good content, and that PS4K will not sell as good if entire PlayStation brand get damaged.

Dude, as good as it sound in theory, almost every current games suffer from issues on consoles, you're over estimating what the developers will do as far as it comes for optimization.

Source: 80% of the have released on current gen consoles.

If this happens, I'm done with consoles.

If you are so against upgrading technology every few years you're pretty much stuck with... wait there isn't actually anything else gaming related that isn't upgrading on a continual basis right now. Consoles were the last remaining thing holding true to a 7 year life cycle. Even Nintendo refreshes their handhelds.

I hate this day.

Contemplating cancelling PSVR preorder - but there is quite some time to think about that.

And no, not kidding. I don't want to fund this development.

Because some people want the best possible performance and find the associate cost very attractive.

Time goes by quickly, certainly. Have to make the most of every moment. Including the time with your games.

... Just yesterday, I felt like it was August when its already March. Time goes by so dang fast to me. Before I'll know it, it will be freaking June.

This is how time works. The math checks out.

So optional hardware upgrades really only appeal to... what? Spending more so your games run as best they possibly can.

Yes. That's exactly and precisely why hardware upgrades are appealing.

How isn't this a slippery slope as years go on?

You need to take more Logic courses at your college. This is not a slippery slope.

We do it now. We buy revisions in any given generation, no? It's really odd people can't wrap their heads around this?

Consoles are simple. They aren't going to expect the masses to replace parts on it. Do you replace parts on a iPad?

I think there is a implicit expectation that a new more capable SKU will mean games will just scale like on PC. I don't think it will be the case.

I've said it a few pages back, but for Microsoft this makes sense to take this step because of Windows 10 and the fact that they would essentially be releasing Steamboxes.

How does this make sense for Sony with no Windows 10 equivalent? What's going to be the backbone of Playstation systems going forward? Are they going to make a Playstation operating system that is going to be iterated upon with every new console? Because we know damn well how long these current consoles take to R&D and develop, and what an integral part the operating system is to these consoles
