Arrogant fool. Those who cannot understand that this will hurt many of the current Sony userbase are just plain naive. A lot of users including myself feel cheated by Sony on this.

Why? Your games will continue to work. You're literally losing nothing on this. You just feel "cheated" because there will be a segment of users playing games with minor enhancements. Your ps4 and its games will work just fine.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
Of the many things I don't get about this, is that Sony is asking for 400€ for PSVR this Fall but at the same is planning to launch a new console that will cost exactly the same.

So in the end they are asking for 800€ to get the full VR experience? How are they going to sell 2 new products at the same time? Bundle them could work I guess but at the same time you are marketing that the full VR experience is with PS4.5 will is probably what they want.
Nobody is forcing you or anyone else to buy the PS4K.If people want to splurge on this incremental upgrade it's their choice but don't act like PSVR is suddenly going to stop working on PS4 because PS4K exists.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
One negative I can see in this scenario is every single piece of upcoming game footage released by Sony being PS4K footage as opposed to vanilla PS4. Not a huge deal, but could get annoying after awhile.

Would this new hardware be - theoretically - be able to push older messed up games like Just Cause 3 to proper 30fps by brute force?

but it's enough to make shity ports on the original ps4

Which any self respecting dev will either need to patch/fix or prevent in the first place. Devs do not get a free pass for poorly optimised titles just now, so they won't in the future. We already have great examples of titles at 1080/30, so everyone knows it's do-able right now. The fear of that is more your projection of how shitty the games industry is, and while this can be true at times, there's plenty of respectable devs who always push for the best experience on the specs they have to play with.

Those digital foundry analysis videos are gonna get a lot longer. It's gonna be really interesting how all this shakes out in the long run.

Hopefully devs won't give up on offering decent performance on the original PS4.

Just for the fun of it, just imagine you're a developer:

Here are your choices:

1) Optimize your game for Vanilla PS4 to get positive reviews and sell as many copies of your game to dat 40mn install base OR

2) SCREW those 40mn and deliver something for them even Tony Hawk-hardened players wont accept and optimize your game just for the couple of millions of PS4k users OR

3) Try to deliver the best possible game for each situation.

While choosing between option 1 and 3 may be decided by given resources, option 2 is actually out of the question, provided taht you'd want to sell as many copies as possible.

Sony will still have a certification/quality process for the PS4 version of a game. They're not going to let devs run riot with crappy performance.

Anyway I'll be in. Is this hitting this year?

I always got the impression Just Cause 3 was more CPU-bound than anything, with the biggest framedips being when Lots of Physics is happening. The CPU jump on this isn't that big, so maybe, maybe not.

Sony have like 100s of products. I'm sure they won't have any problems selling two more.

Also just by looking at the VR preorder demands they won't have much trouble selling it.

Uhm... where have you been the past 3 years? There's bene plenty of games that run like ass on the PS4. Some have crashes even. Some have had unplayable multi-player.

the myth of the trouble free console game is exaclty that, a myth... this is going to exacerbate the issue.

Vive is $799 without the pc. Rift is $600 without pc. Both require a mid to high end pc to run. If you are starting at zero PSVR and PS4k are the cheapest option for Good VR. If you already have a high end pc Rift is a little cheaper and Vive is same price.

somehow I doubt it.

I really expect this to add a few shiny features to neo games like SSAO and whatnot, better frame rates, but nothing crazy dramatic. I think it's more for VR than anything. especially at first. I guess we'll see.

hey maybe 1080p remote play? would be nice.

...a business is in business to create more business.

I cannot believe there are adults on this forum not recognizing that a business will release products to expand their lines and make more money.

"Greedy."

By that virtue, the mom and pop shop down the road takes the fucking greedy cake because they're always introducing a new baked good each week. Fuck them. I only want Kaiser rolls, all day every day!

And this doesn't change in the future? That's my point. Devs who put out shit will do so regardless. Devs that care, will not.

Glass half full analogy, for the shitty titles you want to parade around as proof, I or others can give you many titles that run spectacularly for the hardware.

Unplayable multiplayer usually has nothing to do with the specs, but poor netcode, poor testing prior to launch and other issues during development. Such issues would exist on a £2,000 PC. It's development problems with online functionality, not the specs in the box.

I will be all over this day one. A 4+TF GPU sounds amazing for a closed box. Shame about the CPU, but prob. needed to keep Jaguar to make it easier on devs to develop for both models. We are going to see some incredible things on this box.

Because games running on 1080p at below 30FPS,games running at 900p or games running in a dynamic resolution hasn't been a thing since last year so we are all going to pretend that we don't get badly optimized games right now and everything that has come out in the past two years (including First Party Titles) is running at 1080p 60fps at all time. /s

The price for PS4 is going to drop fast in October with all those people trying to sell there's.

The price is dropping constantly anyway (here in Germany at least). Nowhere near as bad as the Xbox One but still not really the situation you'd expect the clear market leader to be in.

How many times must this be repeated??

Yes, my games will work. But how will they work? How motivated will the devs be to push my PS4 to the limit of their optimization, when they can have an easy excuse for a sub par port, in the name of PS4K?

Just the fact that my games will continue to work, doesnt mean I am losing nothing over this...

How ?
I guess that will also depend on what you expecting from PS4k.
All i want is better frame rate ( don't have to be 60fps) effects and res if the game 900p.

If a dev can't make an optimize game on single target how can we trust them to do better job with two hardware configuration?
PC to PS4 port crappy, PC to PS4 and PS4 Neo port, chance of them both crappy are very high.

i wonder if sony will *always* require a "base mode", as in no ps4k-exclusives ever. makes sense for now but as the cycle wraps up it's going to be harder and harder to scale down

The only way I would even consider this is massive performance boosts for Bloodborne and DS3. My PS4 has all kinds of problems and I'm very hesitant to give them any more money for hardware. But I do love me some Souls.

Install base PS4 = 40 million +
Install base PS4K = 0-5 million in the first year

I bet devs will drop PS4 support day one. Because, why not? Fuck money and common sense...

No as the current PS4 will do VR "fine". No need to get a newer model to run your VR. It's well known PC VR will forever be superior, so those wanting to go for PSVR are hardly being tricked, expectations are already set it's not going to be top end PC like. A "full experience"? Isn't that in the eye of the beholder? Why not just say you need a PC for a full experience, PSVR is a sham? People will decide what is good enough for them and on what budget.

There is a reason why people like consoles so much vs. PC. But that barrier is actually being broken with this, so you make a very good point. Why bother with this if you can just get a PC with much cheaper games?

Well many do go to the PC for gaming these days. The markets still dictate what they want however, and many still want a gaming experience in front of a TV.

One persons choice for gaming cannot be forced on everyone else though, we have a free market to decide what succeeds and what fails. PCs may be superior in so many ways, but for enough people they still choose a console over a PC (or go with both). Enjoyment to be had all round.

PC to PS4 port crappy, PC to PS4 and PS4 Neo port, chance of them both crappy are very high.

Because the power of PS4k means they don't have to optimize as much .
How much work do think it will be to make FFXV have better AA , effect and same 30fps on PS4k.
As i said it depends on what you expecting from PS4k and i don't expect them to push it.

Do you really think any 3rd party devs really push these systems to there limit ?

I find it funny that everyone complains about this, but are completely fine with New Nintendo 3DS
It's was literally half the price and we already had four years of great games. For PS4, we are still waiting for some of the announced games made before the launch of the regular PS4. Hardly feels like we're ready for an upgrade, huh?

>More than double GPU performance but only increase CPU perf by 30%

This wouldn't be able to play current games at neither 4K nor 60fps.

The same certification/quality process that allowed PS3 Skyrim and PS4 Broforce (just as examples) to be released?
