NISA to no longer publish Atlus games in Europe, Atlus not distributing NISA in US

Talk about a lose-lose situation. While I like a lot of the games Atlus develop, they sure can be boneheaded at times.

From now on, importing Atlus game will probably be the best option.

Not if you own a 3DS, it won't. Guess I'll have to look into unlocking the 3DS region lock now and softmod it. Would love to not have to deal with all the hassle, but eh, Atlus really fucked us over here.

They have burnt too many bridges now, if that list is anything to go by. Still wonder what the fuck happened with Nintendo Europe publishing SMTIV, something similar?

EDIT: Didn't Ubisoft used to publish stuff too from Japanese developers like Atlus? If so, they can be added to that long list.

For SMTIV, I'm pretty sure I remember Nintendo implying it was going to get PAL5 localization. Then no news and we know what happened.
Guess Atlus didn't agree on multiple languages and Nintendo said "fuck it" after that, or some financial issues. We'll probably never know.

What an amazing turnaround! We've gone from the situation slowly improving to things potentially being back to the standard it was two generations ago.

Good stuff.

Persona 5 is popular enough that europe will probably still get it, but Sega Europe isn't the best at non english localization...

Still tragic you guys missed Trauma Team, I'd say EU Wii was best except for that

Atlus is as fond of Europe as they are multiplatform games lol. I think Atlus is the only gaming company more stubborn than Nintendo. I feel bad for Euro Atlus fans.

On the other hand I guess NIS is doing quite well if they can afford to drop Atlus. I'm assuming that their Atlus published games are quite popular.

The dream is now officially dead for Europe.

Thank you NISA for all these years to release some of the Atlus titles in Europe(examples: Etrian Odyssey Untold, Devil Survivor 2, Dragon's Crown etc.). I guess this is the end for Europe.

European fans. Prepare for the digital future. Because I have a feeling that if SEGA Europe(and SEGA Japan) doesn't want to change or listen to us, we'll still get the Atlus games. But digital only :( (like Dengeki Bunko :X).

We have to see what will happen for Europe :/.

A little conspiracy theory: What if SEGA Europe decides to work with Deep Silver/Koch Media to release the Atlus titles from now on? I mean. Deep Silver released Catherine in Europe a couple years ago. What if...... ;P

"Probably"

Also when? A few months after like we'd probably get with NISA, or almost a year later like with Catherine?

Importing is the easiest option but we shouldn't need to resort to that for a game that would have done pretty well over here if it was released in the same week as America.

Denial, anger, and now bargaining.

Atlus have now been published in the EU by Koei, Square Enix, Ghostlight, NISA, Sega, Deep Silver, Zen United, PQube, and Nintendo. Every single one of those relationships, even the one with their fucking owners, didn't produce consistent and/or feature complete releases with the US. It's pretty clear that Atlus aren't a good company to work with. NISA did the best job, and now that's no more.

You missed Rising Star Games, THQ and Ubisoft. What a shit show.

Thankfully, I'll just import Persona 5. If it were on a region locked system like the 3DS or Wii U, I probably wouldn't even bother.

Looks like I'll be buying Persona 5 from the US PSN store.

...After someone else confirms that it's not region locked. I really shouldn't have to be so paranoid about the possibility of playing a game, but that's just what Sega have done.

Found this on a Swedish forum about this news, thought it originated from this thread. But I guess it didn't

Yeah my first reaction to this is that Sega will unify how they publish in Europe for cost reasons. Recently it seems quite a few JPN companies are jumping into bed with Koch so Sega could just be aligning with this, for example Valkyria Chronicles Remastered. Interestingly enough FFXV is being published by Koch, to my surprise. They must be offering a decent deal over doing it internally.

It's not all been roses for Atlus in Europe before this. The Persona 4 arena delays is still fairly recent. If anything I'm hoping for Sega to be consistent across the board with worldwide releases. A pipe dream though I know. As long as it's not worse than what it is now I'll be happy.

Edit:
Changed it once I learned what Sega Europe actually do (use Koch, thanks Azure Phoenix)

Was a good run. Still really want to see SMT IV final and EO V released here, guess there is ways round region lock these days.

Hopefully future platforms won't have the same nonsense but who knows.

Well fuck, this is great news to come home to after getting rained on all the way back from work. Just bloody brilliant.

Time for a Brandy or two I guess.

Man, this is just a big f-u to the European customers and especially with 3DS/WiiU games. I guess 3DS can be soft modded to be region lock free but that's a pain and probably kills online functionality.

At least PS4/3 are region free. So is Vita but account locking kills DLC purchases.

It's a shitty situation that's just inexplicably propagated by Atlus/Sega.

Cool, seems we're heading back into the 90s again in Europe. What's next, 50hz coming back with a vengeance?

Yeah my first reaction to this is that Sega will take over the publishing in Europe. In fact I've been expecting this since the acquisition. Why use someone else when you have your own fully fledged publishing arm.
Except Sega Europe don't actually have a publishing arm any more (not since 2012), they use Koch Media for the 2-3 PC games a year that they bother to release physically. So no, this is just a continuation of the "worst case scenario" Europeans were expecting the second we heard that Atlus were being purchased by Sega. Let's face it, Sega Europe has no reason to even exist any more, they're a joke that exists solely to type "we have no news at this time" on Twitter all day long.

Atlus USA's handling of europe almost seems like some elaborate performance art play.

We are in the year 2016. Tiny companies like XSEED (Marvelous), or Aksys (mostly through digital destribution), Nis America and even start up publishers like Idea Factory International are better at publishing games in europe than Atlus USA, literally the oldest and most established publisher among the small niche ones.

And now they pissed away their reliable business partner, their one saving grace that absolved them from having to deal with the continent of filthy peasants. It's just a joke at this point. I own 9 NisA published 3DS games, all were published by Atlus in the US.

Can't wait for SEGA Europe to do nothing and pretend they didn't own Atlus.

At this point I've got more chance of sucking Atlas the fucking Titan's cock to climax than I do before Atlus will let me give them my fucking money.

Persona 5 is pretty much the only reason I'm going to end up buying a PS4. I'm primarily a PC gamer. There's no PS4 exclusives coming that I care about enough to make me want to buy the system, other than Persona 5, but from the sound of things, I won't even be able to shell out £300 just to play this one game because for whatever reason, Atlus seems to fucking hate Europe.

I know this sucks for Europeans, but what exactly was Atlus doing for NISA in America where they already publish their own games?

kinda tempted to ask SEGA Europe on Twitter about Atlus and for them to be all "Holy shit, we own Atlus!?"

Publishing is not just distribution. NISA is using companies like Flashpoint for distribution as well.

sooo..
goodbye etrian odyssey?
goodbye anything atlus related?
goodbye anything sega related?
goodbye shin megami tensei?

i mean, cmon sega... cmon atlus..
europe is alive and kicking...

If sega europe wouldnt be so incompetent this would be even good news to europeans, we arent in the fucking 90's anymore.

But alas, we are going from bad to worse it seems.

Worst case we'll get them digitally.
Eh, no, judging by some of the last performance, worst case scenario would be games either not coming out in Europe or arriving tragically late. Also, digital only on 3DS is not a good situation.

they were distributing their titles:
http://atlus.com/sales/lol.php

it looks like grand kingdom might be the last one they do.

Can't say I didn't expect the Sega deal to show it's face sooner or later.

pretty sure it's only a matter of time before atlus usa gets renamed sega of america.

Cry for us, cry for us because no one else will.

And people gave me shit for wanting Nintendo to purchase Atlus.

This was before they went all trigger happy with censorship.

Still think that would be a bad idea. Censor/localisations or not.

They also helped with the localisations to Efigs, minis the e, for Odin's Sphere.

But Grand Kingdom is a Spike Chunsoft property not Atlus.

My bad. Mixed up

These aren't the DS days anymore. Atlus already self-published games like Conception 2 and SMTIV digitally in Europe. There's no reason why they wouldn't do this again if they don't find a retail publisher for a game.

I'll just buy P5 US version digitally and continue to not support any super late EU releases. This company is a mess in todays VG industry.

Is SEGA even bothering publishing 7th Dragon III digitally in Europe?
I know - "we don't have any news to share at this time"
...great communication from SEGA Europe.

Seems like the worst case is we don't get the games.
Going by NISA's statements, Atlus has become difficult to work with so other publishers might also shy away from them. I guess we'll see in time if anyone steps up to the plate.

Koch picking up FFXV actually makes a lot of sense since Squenix already handles distribution for Deep Silver in the US on all of their titles.
