Overwatch has 7 million+ players

Congrats to Blizzard! There are still a few games I want to get through at the moment, so I'm holding off playing Overwatch for a bit - but I'm still completely obsessed with everything regarding the game anyway. I never usually watch Youtube vids of people playing games, and yet... Blizzard, what have you done to me.

That's a great post. Made me laugh.

Glad to hear it's doing so well, I hope between DOOM and Overwatch publishers realize shooters can be popular without playing like Call Of Duty.

Marketing and the open beta's put this one in a really nice position, also helps that there's not a whole lot happening right now in the online shooter scene either.

Jim Sterling recently talked about this on his latest Jimquisition - the industry is finally moving out of it's brown military shooter phase and is going back to injecting some actual color and variety into the FPS genre.

Please, no. Stealth heroes aren't fun for anyone apart from the one playing it.

With the way Overwatch is designed, the stealth would be like 2 seconds just enough to get up on someone to unload or backstab or whatever. It would not be like TF2 stealth.

What are you basing that from, or is it just a hunch? Ignoring the fact that PC is Blizzard's most popular playerbase across all titles (or I should just say Diablo 3) even the GAF community is majority PC on Overwatch
Yep just a hunch, the PS4 version is the only one I see advertised in cinemas, billboards, bus stops and so on, it seems to get the most exposure and seeming as this is a brand new IP I don't think we can just assume it'll do best on PC. It seems to have done really well everywhere.

But they said there wasn't enough content

What are those 7 million players even doing? Staring at the menu? It's like the game has nothing to do?

Cobranding deals, how do they work

Anecdote is anecdote I suppose, and yes we can just assume it'll do best on PC because it's Blizzard.

Lol no way. PC is the main audience of Blizzard games. They have incentives such as cross game items and the game is clearly meant to be played with KB+M, it's just too fast for pad play. Not to mention the PC version was $40 and there were already big tournaments that played out.
It's fine with a controller. Not saying KB/M isn't more accurate but it is not too fast for a gamepad.

Holy shit that's amazing.

Just goes to show that a game doesn't need to be f2p in order to get a huge playerbase these days.

Wish I could play :C

Wow, that's pretty incredible.

I wonder what the platform split is like.

This is what I'm curious of. Hopefully it's 50/50 and not mostly on PC.

How many copies of battlefront sold? Titanfall? A game can be a success and still disappoint on the content front.

Thank you. I was desperate playing a shooter without fucking ADS, I was so disappointed by Bungie for implementing it in Destiny...

Nah, it's still ofc a resounding success but it's a shame this industry is headed to keeping the cards even closer to their chest.
Not really. Blizzard isn't trying to be shady I honestly believe. They have such a monstrous presence in Asia where first sold purchases aren't entirely common, reporting sales likely wouldn't tell the whole story.

No they haven't. I wasn't able to play personally and they have had issues effecting other regions but overall still a huge success given the volume of sales.

Eh. I have not had one problem once, nor has anyone I know.

Unless it is a regional thing I am skeptical.

I haven't had a single problem with the servers, they've been rock solid. By far the smoothest Blizzard launch that I can remember.

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Who was the poster that was dead set convinced it would have more sales then beta users?
Rexnovis. Dude still hasn't gotten over his Division grudge lol.

And people were dismissing the beta figures as meaningless because it was free. LOL.
You realize the thread title was changed to reflect amount of players. Not sold copies. Undoubtedly it sold millions. But calm yourself dude.

I'm not sure if it's been asked/answered but is that 7 million in units sold or 7 million users? If it's users, my Xbox One would account for 5 different gamertag that have played the game. Still a very impressive number for the opening week.
