Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

Couldn't care less.

I enjoy my PS4 and surely am not spending more money to get a resolution which requires a TV costings upwards of £1000. Hell, to make it even worse, these games will NEVER be native 4K.

Sorry; for myself it seems like an absolute waste of my money.

So many people keep mentioning the existing sales. The vanilla PS4 is dead the second Neo releases. Nobody in their right mind is gonna buy an old outdated model when a new one that is 2-3x more powerful exists for a little extra $ more.

People really want them to pointlessly preserve a few months of sales? I think its stupid. There will be millions of eyes watching your event at E3. Its in NA as well were you sell a lot of consoles. Show off the Neo and start taking preorders so that you push millions out the door at launch.

Both Nintendo and Sony are making a mistake for not taking advantage of E3 marketing imo. Especially Nintendo.. who has no existing sales at all.

This statement is patently false and ridiculous. People still buy last gen phones, last gen video cards, last gen TVs, last gen monitors, used cars. If price estimates rumors are to be believed the NEO will cost $100-$200 more than a current PS4 that's approx. 33%-66% more. Not everyone wants or can afford to spend that much on a console.

Why not unveil it? It's the biggest thing they have in there pocket right now, and this is the biggest videogame tradeshow. But nope let's save it for another day, instead the conference will be littered with third party games with exclusive preorder crap. Yay!

I assumed they would just replace the PS4 with this model and phase out the older model but this wording suggests otherwise. It makes no sense to have 2 distinct pieces of hardware with close prices. Either the original PS4 is going to get really cheap or this will be 500+ dollars.

Of course it does.

They will drop the lower model and it will be for the people who aren't interested in more power.

THIS HAS TO BE THE THEME FOR THE E3 MS PRESSER.

Consoles aren't phones. or laptops. or tablets. They are devices you spend hundreds of hours playing video games on. This gen has pretty much proven that the best performing multiplats with the resolution and framerate is what matters. That is all what everyone is talking about. Why would you buy a $300 1.8 tflop console when you can buy a 4.2 tflop console for $400? You'd have to be a complete idiot to choose the 300$ model. Even if goes down to 250 its still a stupid deal. The Neo will probably have a bunch of future proof features like 4K support etc and it will perform better with VR.

This gen hasn't proven anything of the sort. Yes, performance is one area people choose a console on - but there were lots of other reasons that PS4 did well. Brand value in markets outside of US/UK, releasing at the same time as the Xbox (not a year later like PS3), all the shit that MS got around their announcement and the u-turns etc.

I could see the PS4 being $299 (maybe $250) and the Neo being $399 (at launch). I think $100 is enough of a difference.

I feel like the Neo is just gonna be like the Xbox elite, few people will buy it because it's much more expensive. It's just there to play as fan service to the base, because Sony wants to play to the hardcore.

I already covered that bro, you need to take it up with the owner and the most feared mod. Good luck.

In reality criticism flies freely around GAF, usually when backed by evidence and facts. Hyperbole doesn't go far, even if well reasoned, so be prepared to be critiqued if you post far out there things. You're not a victim, just being scrutinized. Sony-GAF, MS-GAF or Nintendo-GAF is just frowned upon, as is GAF-hivemind chat. It only serves to shutdown discussion and make others feel bad.

I am glad you think that.

The idea is that the PS4 is the cheap entry-level option while the Neo is for enthusiasts, I'm sure. By the time the Neo hits the base PS4 will probably be selling for $199, possibly lower.

The PS4 slim will probably be 200-250 bucks this year so 399 for the Neo is a fair gap and two different customer bases. It will work fine.

Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

There is no adjustment there have always been two pills one blue and one red.

Lets hope Sony see sense and go the the stronger red pill and find a way for somthing zen lite and maybe more bandwidth.

Ps4 is $ 349, if it gets to $ 300, then the premium experience needs to be around $ 500....and I cant imagine a powerful console even with a 30 % + clocked Jaguar, its justa millstone around the neck.

Hardcore gamers wanting an enhanced performance ps4, I bet 99 % want 60 FPS option if the developer can do it, as such it needs CPU + bandwidth overhaul.

I would be gutted if the Neo was gimped, would consider scorpio for those Witcher type games, a Jaguar even running faster would hold everything back and could potentially lose users who want high end console performance for third party BACK to MS.

I say back as I had 360 last gen as it ran multiplats so much better, Sony must know this..

Yeah, I'm not saying it's going to be a ton of people. E3 just killed my hyper boner because everything shown is just going to run better on new hardware.

Is it confirmed NX has no backward compatibility?

There's no reason to think that they'll be showing games on PS4 Neo anymore than they'll be showing games on beefed up PCs. If they're actually showing the games on actual hardware for the sake of appearing honest, then showing them on Neo wouldn't make sense as when it comes out it was on Neo it would definitely be perceived as dishonest, especially considering the PR storm that's surrounding this new console release paradigm. And if they're not showing it on actual hardware, then might as well fully BS it and show it on high spec PC hardware. So I don't understand the concern that games will be shown on Neo without it being announced. I think that's the least likely possibility.

I was commenting on the other way around, as in forward compatibility. We don't know if Wii U games will be supported on NX, and I think it's high likely they will be, but NX will almost certainly not be supported on Wii U. This is different from the PS4 Neo situation, in which case if your goal is just to play the most games at the lowest price possible with Playstation, getting an original PS4 makes sense, while if your goal is to play the most games at the lowest price possible with Nintendo, it makes sense to at least wait until the full details of it are announced as if it has backwards compatibility it would be cheaper to just get NX than both Wii U and NX.

Because their priority this E3 is to push and sell PSVR. If you announce the Neo at the same time, all the conversations will be about the Neo. PSVR is the unproven product and requires far more marketing push than an upgraded PS4.

So budget friendly consumers are idiots? (It sounds like you are speaking for YOURSELF on the bolded and what you want, but that isn't the majority).

A budget conscious consumer is not going to have a 4K TV for several years.
A budget conscious consumer was content with the Wii, PS2 and PC over the PS3, Xbox, etc

This is economics, and there's historical industry data to back it up. I'm not sure where you are going with this "elitist" model/mindset.

(As for why the PS4 is selling more, there are a variety of reasons that other people can touch on, but it is not because it is the most powerful, although that does matter to some).

Because we KNOW sony's not showing new hardware, we do not know the same for microsoft which is the basis of the argument.

Ok at this point I'm completely lost as to what your arguement actually is. Clearly addressing each individual point as you bring them up makes no difference. I keep addressing arguments only to then be informed that it's not your arguement. How about you actually lay out your argument in its entirety as opposed to breaking into separate little arguments that do not seem to correlate with each other whatsoever.

Yeah, I can easily see PS4 Standard $250/$299 PS4 Neo $499.

Depending on how they want to play it, a higher margin on PS4 Neo (vs, say, a $399 pricepoint) could help them price reduce on the standard model lower/faster than otherwise also.

As a non-PS4 owner this makes me not know what to do :( Was hoping for some clarity out of E3.

Want to play UC4, want to play No Man's Sky in August...want to play The Tomorrow Children... but don't want to buy a PS4 if Neo is right around the corner.

But is it? :/

I'm in the same boat. I feel like I have to wait until the Neo is fully revealed and explained.

I think not unveiling this at E3 will ultimately hurt the PS VR. People who pre-ordered earlier this year will probably cancel to wait on the NEO. It's kind of shitty how Sony handled the timing of PS VR along with the announcement of the NEO. They should've announced both at the same time or unveil the NEO prior to PS VR. That way people who pre-ordered PS VR don't feel duped.

Also, my prediction is that the NEO will fail. It would be smarter if they phased out the existing PS4 and sold only the NEO. My assumption is that majority of consumers will choose to still purchase the existing PS4 model instead of the NEO if given the choice simply because it will be cheaper and still play all the games. If there's not an exclusive game or feature to the NEO and only marginal improvements to graphics then why spend the extra money? People who care deeply about graphics and performance (e.g. those who can't play a game unless it's 1080p 60 FPS) probably already have moved to PC.

I hate to break it to you, but a lot of games are often presented on PC's at higher resolutions than current consoles can perform i.e. watch dogs, witcher 3, division

So if it's widely acceptable practice then what's your big problem with this? Even if this is happening there is a slight difference in the two different scenarios. Neo has not been released yet!

Wasn't there a story out about how the ps4 was only 4 gigs of ram until shortly before launch?

Yep, because several large developers, even mainly the Knack developers themselves, asked for 8GB of RAM, and GDDR5 was just able to get 512MB chips ready with not much increase on cost in the same timeframe.

That is why Knack is God Tier! ;)

RAM is easier to allot in dev kits than chipsets with no real negative side effects. Now since they are using Polaris, they can always clock higher and get more Flops, much like the rumored Scorpio is doing. It is Polaris, and that will not change, how much they clock it can however.

This indicates to me that they are going to introduce this thing as simply another version of the ps4, and not really play it up to much to the point where people start thinking this is the successor to the ps4. Wouldn't be surprised if things like the case design aren't all that different if at all from the current ps4. Which I think is all smart. They have an entry level console and an "elite" console which can serve different userbase needs without making one feel alienated.

This is what a bunch of us have been saying for quite some time. Yet people want to have their delusions, for some reason, and cannot wrap their head around the one ecosystem not unlike Android/iOS.

"Still runs cod and fifa? - gimme the cheap one!"

I thought we knew this was coming this year because games have to support it beginning October? Is that incorrect?

Nothing Andrew House said would be in conflict with the rumors we've had so far.

Please tell us more about Sony's upcoming E3 2016 Conference.

It's what a majority of their last conference was, and I don't see them dropping the bombs this year like Shenmue 3 or FFVII remake. But please do tell what I have to be excited for in terms of something really cool and new at the conference. Literally 3 months of GAF hype building upon the speculation and rumours all cultivating to E3 and not getting any kind of news about it to instead just have a press statement just acknowledge it? That's literally the definition of disappointing to me.

Piecing together bits from rumours, and I think one or two insiders said 2016, but nothing is fact until it is fact.

Can still come this year, initial reaction was "Gamescom!".
