Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

So if it's widely acceptable practice then what's your big problem with this? Even if this is happening there is a slight difference in the two different scenarios. Neo has not been released yet!

I'm saying it's personally kind of killed my hype because I know I'll need new hardware to run these games as advertised.

LOL @ that posters who said it was bullshit.

It was pretty obvious from the rumors.

Tech is now disposable. The trends are pretty obvious.

We need a Wall of Shame.

Delayed to match the Scorpios specs confirmed.

Possibility but you can't assume this either

There's 6 months left in the year so pointless if they announce this thing. They could also be aiming for a Q1 2017 launch as well. It's a hard choice as launching a year before the xbox could cause issues for MS. But you don't really know how many people keep up with power rumors.

Piecing together bits from rumours, and I think one or two insiders said 2016, but nothing is fact until it is fact.

Can still come this year, initial reaction was "Gamescom!".

Ya but E3 ges more attention. Seems weird.

Then again announcing Neo and not releasing for 4 months is bound to kill ps4 sales.

Time to be mad at nothing!

Argh why Sony!?!?!? Why didn't you have the console at E3 so that I could be mad at you for not making me buy a new console?!

/s Internet logic is tiring. Let them delay it until it's ready.

This indicates to me that they are going to introduce this thing as simply another version of the ps4, and not really play it up to much to the point where people start thinking this is the successor to the ps4. Wouldn't be surprised if things like the case design aren't all that different if at all from the current ps4. Which I think is all smart. They have an entry level console and an "elite" console which can serve different userbase needs without making one feel alienated.

That's what I think too.

It also sets the expectations of it being a way to play existing games better (at the current PS4 resolutions) for those that want it. Otherwise, you'll get people expecting a huge jump with PS4 games running with glorious graphics in 4K, which the specs really don't seem to suggest.

Yep, because several large developers, even mainly the Knack developers themselves, asked for 8GB of RAM, and GDDR5 was just able to get 512MB chips ready in the same timeframe.

That is why Knack is God Tier! ;)

RAM is easier to allot in dev kits than chipsets with no real negative side effects. Now since they are using Polaris, they can always clock higher and get more Flops, much like the rumored Scorpio is doing. It is Polaris, and that will not change, how much they clock it can however.

I'm hearing rumors that the gpu in the neo is like the new 480x that got announced. If they up the clocks, you could get around 6 tf for this as well.

I don't think we will see Neo footage until it has a release date or it is released. Even then I highly doubt they will show that footage to trick people. I assume it will have something showing that the footage was captured on Neo/PS4K.

I'm wondering how well the Neo will do - I'm not terribly worried about the OG PS4. Outside of the hardcore I can't see it flying off the shelf, but I can only speculate. It seems Sony's gauged that focusing on the Neo right now won't net them very good reception, so they're keeping it as more of a footnote until closer to release and hoping the reception will be better then.

I assumed they would just replace the PS4 with this model and phase out the older model but this wording suggests otherwise. It makes no sense to have 2 distinct pieces of hardware with close prices. Either the original PS4 is going to get really cheap or this will be 500+ dollars.
I'd be surprised if around the Neo launch they didn't reduce the OG ps4 price. I'm guessing Neo will be 400-500 and they'll drop the OG to at least 300. Even if the gap is 100, there will be plenty of people that buy the OG.

Consoles aren't phones. or laptops. or tablets. They are devices you spend hundreds of hours playing video games on. This gen has pretty much proven that the best performing multiplats with the resolution and framerate is what matters. That is all what everyone is talking about. Why would you buy a $300 1.8 tflop console when you can buy a 4.2 tflop console for $400? You'd have to be a complete idiot to choose the 300$ model. Even if goes down to 250 its still a stupid deal. The Neo will probably have a bunch of future proof features like 4K support etc and it will perform better with VR.

Could you try and be a little less insulting? There are people who have less, who save for months or years to get a new console so yes, $250-300 might be their sweet spot. They don't have to have the best of everything.

Makes sense to me, and also gives Sony more time to see what Xbox will do and possibly counter. I'm sure the reports that the beefed up Xbox made them want to take a wait and see approach.

I mean how stupid would it have been to follow up MS at E3 with another beefed up console that's not as good as their competitor.

Sony playing it safe. Fine with me.

So budget friendly consumers are idiots? (It sounds like you are speaking for YOURSELF on the bolded and what you want, but that isn't the majority).

A budget conscious consumer is not going to have a 4K TV for several years.
A budget conscious consumer was content with the Wii, PS2 and PC over the PS3, Xbox, etc

This is economics, and there's historical industry data to back it up. I'm not sure where you are going with this "elitist" model/mindset.

(As for why the PS4 is selling more, there are a variety of reasons that other people can touch on, but it is not because it is the most powerful, although that does matter to some).

100$ difference doesn't separate elite consumers from budget consumers. With this mentality the PS3 and 360 would still be king right now. They are not. They are dead because the newest call of duty looks better on next gen consoles. The same way it will look better on Neo than Vanilla ps4. PS4 vanilla launched at 400$ and sold 20 million units in one year. Why wouldn't the Neo do the same? The only reason it doesn't is because Sony prevents it from doing so. Which would happen with dumb marketing/communication and/or shortage in manufacturing.

The PS4 will be cheaper by the time NEO launches.....

I'm pretty upset at this mid-gen console upgrade bullshit Sony and Microsoft are pulling. I know they say there will be full compatibility between the models, but I'm kinda worried that games will run like shit on the regular PS4 in a few years. What the hell is the point of even getting a console over a PC at that point?

If this is going to be a trend with console hardware becoming obsolete after only 2-3 years then this will likely be my last gen as a console gamer and I'll just go fully into PC.

NEO will probably fail. Also, Sony is killing the current momentum of the PS4. Good move Sony. If they are going to jump off that cliff, they need to do it soon and set a release date for the NEO sometime in Q4 this year. Anyone thinking of buying a PS4 now is waiting for more info about the NEO.

Bingo.

If Sony plays this well they can have the cake, eat it and keep the money. I get the feeling that they are worried about alienating their fanbase. At this point, I think we're past that and most are just waiting to see what it actually is. To avoid cutting there sales, cutting the price of the PS4 OG to $299, and calling NEO PS4K selling it at about $450, will communicate that it's one ecosystem. Clear, concise communication might be the simplest and most effective solution.

You don't know that though because you don't know that they'll be showcasing the games on HW that is as yet unrevealed. You are assuming they will which seems incredibly unlikely given the fact that that, as previously mentioned, the HW has yet to actually be revealed and they have a reputation for running live demos in existing HW this far this gen.

Also I'm still waiting for you to actually lay out your entire argument so that we can discuss it in its totality instead of just informing me "thats not my arguement though this is" every time I addres one of your posts.

Meh, I personally wouldn't be worried about that. Look how good uncharted 4 looks on vanilla hardware. And all of these rumors so far point to neo versions not being too vastly different from vanilla. Denser fog, more grass, better framerates, but looking like a totally different game as you see to be worried about, nah.

Just my 2 cents

I'm really glad this won't be shown at E3. More time for ACTUAL games than new hardware.

Yup.
I've always maintained that it wouldn't be there. Not sure why some people were so adamant that it 'had to be there'. This e3 is already packed with game announcements and what I imagine will be a pretty significant PSVR segment. No time to explain and sell to the audience a controversial new upgrade. Leave that for Gamescom or a dedicated event later on.

Your ps4 won't be obsolete, both will share the same games and ecosystem, no more starting over from scratch, how is this a bad thing?

I don't see it doing that great, especially between itself and PSVR.

E3 just got a lot less exciting for me. Now the only hardware that'll be shown is the Xbox Mini (the Scorpio will only be talked about).

Hardware reveals are always really exciting to me. :(

I have zero interest in this but its probably a smart move to not show it.

There are plenty of people like me who arent too thrilled about this mid-generation leap. So delaying this announcement for a show that isnt as publicized is probably the right idea.

Showing a ps4k that costs 500 isnt going light the world on fire and could potentially ruin your entire conference if its not received well.

Sad it won't be there, but I get why. Still think it's launching this year and still holding out hope they've had time to give it that last minute CPU bump. I think the thing I'm most disappointed by is this means we won't actually get to see the physical console. We have a pretty good idea of the internals already, but I was really looking forward to seeing how they'd tweak the design.

Still excited for E3 though. Hopefully this gives them time to focus almost solely on games instead of having to devote half an hour to talking about new hardware.

Well, Sony is doing its own E3 with PlayStation Experience every year. I think the console will be reveled at Gamerscon and then at PlayStation experience the launch?

E3 is becoming obsolete I guess all the houses are making their own parties with their rules...

And we witness the best E3 of all time (last year). 2015: the year of dreams. 2016: the year of crushing 2015 dreams. 2017: the year that the dreams of 2015 become reality.

just give me the last guardian this year Sony.

My hopes are so low that I'll predict

Nier 2: delayed
Gravity Rush 2: delayed for NA

And all this E3 is going to be PSVR so Sony can sell those Move sets that in the past get piled in they warehouse

Well I do know that regardless of what hardware they show it on, it will run better on Neo based on the rumors of every game having a base/neo mode.

And there is literally no point in arguing anymore in this thread.
