I'm not normally that into memes, but I feel like I need more Scorpio memes in my life.

I'm hearing rumors that the gpu in the neo is like the new 480x that got announced. If they up the clocks, you could get around 6 tf for this as well.

Of course they can. Currently the clocks are rumored to be around 911Mhz. That gives it in the range of 4.2TF with the CUs it has. If they clock it to the thermal threshold (like the maximum Gies decided to cling to, and not the current card rating of 5.5TF), then you can achieve around 6TF.

That is why the specs are not 'final' due to clocking, however the chipset is. Polaris.

Does anyone remember Scorpio in the Simpsons?

Someone needs to replace the UN symbol with the Sony one, lol.

I'm very surprised he flat out said it, I know it is a known fact at this point but still, business wise I think he should have kept quiet until the reveal, there is still a difference between a rumor and a confirmation to the average consumer.

The new console, which is codenamed “Neo”, will target hardcore gamers, he said, as well as consumers with a 4K television set looking for more high-resolution content.

That's basically how I fit into this. All I want is a 4k bluray player that supports both HDR10 and Dolbyvision. If I can get one that can also play PS4 games with higher settings, even better. It'll save me a spot under my TV.

I'm hoping that since a big selling point of the PS4K will be 4k media playback, they'll have a renewed interest in media in general and finally make a proper media remote.

Sony taking a pre-emptive shot at Microsoft's conference. I'm basing this on the assumption that Microsoft expected Neo announcement at Sony's presser and the Scorpio talk was intended to put a damper on that announcement.

Disappointed but at the same time hope that Sony goes ahead with the "better CPU" option they were rumored to be contemplating.

The bummer about it not being at E3 is I'm going to be looking at every single one of these games and wondering what it looks like on PS4k. Man I really wanted to see what it could do

The talk next week would be all about the non-presence of PS4K/Neo if Sony didn't address this. They did the right move.

was that ever a legit rumor or just speculation?

In that case, they still have time to up the clock now don't they? Would Sony be the type to want to do that?

Your ps4 won't be obsolete, both will share the same games and ecosystem, no more starting over from scratch, how is this a bad thing?
It's a bad business model. Copying the smartphone release cycle for consoles is just stupid. And right now smartphone manufacturers are suffering losses because there is less demand for new phones every 2 years. Also, with each new console release there should be a generational leap forward not an iterative one. This is ruining the joy of new consoles for me because with each new version you go "meh" instead of "WOAH!!"

Iterative release just seem like a huge step backwards for consoles when just a few years ago there were more forward thinking ideas like using the cloud for more computational power.

Well if they showcase a lot of psvr at e3 and no Neo then I think people will be wondering if footage is running on ps4 or Neo

I really hope Sony come out early on and definitively state that everything shown to be running on "PS4" is the current PS4 and not Neo, otherwise this is all we're going to fucking hear the entire conference and afterwards should anything be shown off looking remotely good. Already started with Horizon. Not long til folk insist screenshots they see of Uncharted must be running on the new console it looks so good, lol.

It is DVD/BD trojan horse all over again.

It's a good strategy. 4K is gonna be growing rapidly very soon.

It's a great business model, having to start over and wait too long for better products is silly imo. This is the way to go in the future. This gives people more options while maintaining what they have their is no downside.

Same here.

If it does not effect the thermals, I do not see why not.

Like I said earlier, it's a real mistake for Sony to not have it at E3, especially if the MS Scorpio is there, it'll be an interesting E3 I guess, the first time Sony could lose in years...

Despite what some insiders here on and elsewhere are claiming - I'm 100% sure the Scorpio will not be unveiled at e3 either. Mostly for the same reasons Sony isn't plus the fact that Scorpio will most likely be released much later next year.
Microsoft would be mad to announce it now, with Xbox One performing the way it is - just look at the NPD results from yesterday - it would have a terrible effect on sales for their current console.

bluff ahead of the MS press conference? Or are both sides going to keep their powder dry for as long as possible?

A typical Sony strategy is to let MS announce these types of disruptive things first and then see which way the wind blows. Depending on the reaction they can tailor their strategy and message to make themselves look better or at least make MS look worse. They've done this with great effectiveness in the past.

The plan was never to show it at E3. I'm surprised they acknowledged its existence, but my gut tells me that's because they didn't want every interview to be asking about it.

I do they disregard that little silly "Neo will not have any exclusives tied to it" rule, it just doesn't make any sense to me. Why build a more powerful construct of your original to then limit it?

How is it a mistake? This won;t have any effect on ps4, all MS will be doing to hurting x1 sales.

Just wait until MS release Scorpio and see how they do, and if they do well (they won't), do your solution, don't react to something you don't need to, Sony.

Surprised that he confirmed Neo but not surprised that it wouldn't be at E3. No reason whatsoever for it to be at E3. Sony would be better off doing a recorded, scripted, etc. Nintendo Direct style video in September/October. Gets the message across better and can be shown why you should buy it without a live audience clapping and/or booing.

Now im a little more hyped for Monday. Games, games and games. :)

Neither Sony or Microsoft should talk about Neo and Scorpio respectively, especially Microsoft since it's 18 months away. Scorpio, Xbox One base and Xbox One slim all in the same conference would be a bad decision in my opinion.

Back to Sony, I wouldn't be surprised to see them sit back, watch what happens with Microsoft and Scorpio and if the feedback is mostly negative, delay or cancel the Neo in order to take advantage of the negativity around the Xbox One brand. Could be somewhat of a repeat from E3 2013.

They might be banking on the hardcore + 4k adopters being enough to generate profit off it. Could be part of a larger plan as a stepping stone towards future hardware or television adoption as well and won't need to make bank. Their strategy at the moment is unclear.

Yeah if they didn't confirm it now and it no showed at E3 they would get a mountain of questions from the press / social media about it

Why? I don't get your logic here. If anything whoever shows their iterative console at e3 will get the most negative reaction. Just look at the storm of controversy we've seen the last couple of months regarding these new consoles.
If Microsoft are foolish enough to prematurely reveal their new console next week it could actually give Sony valuable feedback on how to handle their own reveal months later.

Wasn't there a story out about how the ps4 was only 4 gigs of ram until shortly before launch?

It was, and before that it was 2gb on the original spec sheet. But memory densities being changed (same number of chips as the original design) allowed Sony to take advantage and double that 4gb fairly last minute. Adding extra memory is far different than a full out hardware swap just to gain e-peen over microsoft's newer/later design so you should probably get that out of your heads.

Goodness.

Or how about MSFT has made MSFT look worse on their own accord, lol.

Probably TGS, but it doesn't have to be either. They can have their own press event for it specifically.

Shinobi heard Gamescon... which makes more sense, since Japan is no longer the console demographic it once was. Hence why the PS4 launched in the US/Europe now first.

I bet that if U4 was a holidays 2016 release and ND would show some of the mind blowing parts in the game EVERYONE would say "NEO!" lol :)

Companies don't work like that.

They do what is best for them. Not react to the competition.

PS4K will sell like hotcakes and it will also boost 4K TV sales for Sony. As people will finally have a reason to do this.
