Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

No way. I'm not sure exactly what Osiris means but maybe red pill is PS4 and blue pill is Neo?

There is little chance Sony have been sending out the dev kits they have for devs to work with (along with a do/don't rule book) and then turn around and say.....Sorry we're upgrading it and coming out later still instead. Devs would really love that extra-extra work!

Read his posts, Osiris has said this quite a few times and people just dont read what he is saying. When he first leaked Neo, he clearly said Sony has 2 options, one of them has an even better CPU and performance than the jaguar + 30 %....

He then said it again, I think in the scorpio thread, he now uses Matrix red and blue pill. Go check. Discuss. Its not a one off, he keeps repeating the message....wink wink.

Also why not, the dev kit would be the minimum spec, If sony deliver even more 1- 3 months later, thats up to them. You think Sony only designed 1 option ?

It's like people forgot how ridiculous E3 was last year when there were no console reveals. Calm down everyone.

e3 last year was pretty phenomenal in my opinion. Uc4 demo, ffs7 remake, the last guardian re reveal. shenmue 3 reveal, and horizon zero dawn

and mS had cuphead and the backwards compatibility announcement

I really think it'll be $299 for PS4 and $399 for PS4 Neo. $100 difference is in that happy place where it still feels substantial but it's not prohibitively expensive for someone to consider paying a bit more when considering a large purchase.

the bigger the price difference the less of an advantage that is

Honestly i think it was kinda dumb to let us know tbh. It gives MS a chance to react to this now. Had they not let anyone know, knowing that MS goes first they could've gotten more information out of them. Now MS can just stay quiet and Sony get nothing.

Weird move to confirm it right before E3 (and before MSs conference) and months before the fall, but not say anything else about it. Youre basically telling everyone a new console a coming out. People who were intent on waiting for it will still do so. I dont get it.

Confirming what? Yes there's a PS4 Neo. That's it. No price, no release date, nothing. This has no impact on your average consumer who will still buy PS4s and games as well as the upcoming PSVR. I'm not understanding where this silly narrative of "Sony fucked up!" Is coming from.

I was doubtful we would see anything at E3 this year hardware wise but there was always hope.

At least now my expectations are in check PSVR PSVR PSVR and xbox SLIM

They let us know so they they won't be hounded at E3 with questions about. Now the focus will be squarely on the games. Any cat and mouse game they have going with Microsoft goes WAY above anything us non-insiders can probably even comprehend so that's irrelevant.

Why does it matter to Sony which model you buy if they make profit from either one? They are not competing against themselves, but rather are giving us options. They are going to support both models for the rest of the "generation."

Stupid question perhaps but does the Neo automatically bump up older PS4 games to higher res/FPS ?

I'd love to play Bloodborne for instance at a steady 60 FPS.

Sony fucked up because by staying quiet, they could have gotten info about scorpio. They blew any chance of getting info about it now. They basically told MS to keep their cards close to their chests. Dumb move.

They could have easily said Neo wasnt going to show up right after MSs conference. At least you keep them guessing that way and possibly get some tidbits at their conference. Dumb move period.

Sadly I don't think the world really cares about NX. The mainstream seems to have forgotten about Nintendo. Nintendo would have had the opportunity to show Zelda off on the NC and really get the ball rolling while news outlets were all over it. The event will get coverage, but there's no telling how it'll all play out.

In all fairness, it's difficult to care about something when we don't even know what it is. It's a new platform with a new concept. That's all we've got. It'll either be a surprise hit, a mediocre performer or an abysmal failure. At the moment, no one can predict its fate.

Stupid Sony for being a little more transparent to your consumers than you need to be!

That is the new narrative we are going with now???

Hahaha.

They have all the info they need. Scorpio and Neo are both Polaris based. It comes down to clocks and deciding on which CPU to use.

And ProTip: Both Sony and MSFT have their own moles, who have this information leaked back and forth, long before us silly little forum ranters even get said, 'leaks'.

Its not stupid at all, if Bloodborne is capped at 30 or has coding made for 30, no it wont without a patch. As Sony had a heavy hand, it would be the type of game that might get a patch...However, I can imagine a game like Infamous which ran at 45-50 FPS would be wonderful on Neo and hit 60.

If the Neo cannot run most 3rd party AAA games at 1080p60 without a hitch or glitch then whats the point of buying the Neo over Ps4 ? It needs to be as powerful as possible otherwise it serves NO PURPOSE. Neo needs a zen and a better bandwidth and maybe a better HD connection otherwise who cares ?

I see a $ 399 Neo with a Jaguar CPU just a console with no purpose. The firts digital foundry article on Neo if the frame rate struggles its dead.....why bother.

This is my big concern. If they're sticking with this iterative upgrade business model going forward, then why the hell would I not just stick to PC? Not having to worry about and deal with this stuff has always been a big reason I buy consoles.

I'm worried that developers will optimize games for Neo and then make sacrifices to get it to run on the base model, whereas without the Neo they would just be optimizing for the base PS4. In other words, I'm worried that the performance of games I buy in 2017 will suffer compared to an alternate reality in which the Neo didn't exist.

Also, I still feel burned by the New 3DS and how it has exclusive games. I know the Neo is supposed to be fully compatible, but if they get a lot of success with it and this iterative upgrade business model becomes the standard, I don't have much confidence in the compatibility thing holding true for future upgrades.

Idk, it's not the end of the world, it's just not at all a direction I want the industry to take. And FWIW (anecdotal, so probably not much), literally every person I've talked to in real life who's heard about these console upgrades has had a negative reaction to it.

THIS Really not hyped for all the games at E3 to be running on better hardware that I don't have yet.

I don't think Sony really cares that much about Scorpio - they have their cards, and they are moving forward. What MS does in a year and a half from now doesn't have much affect on their plans unless Neo doesn't make it out until next year.

If the difference is $100 and the performance is what it's chalked up to be then count me in.

No. The developer has to provide a patch otherwise all the older games will run the same way they would on a base model PS4.

I'm curious about this as well. If it has better hardware innately, it should at least be slightly better even without a patch to make it better, right? I understand if they want to make it look better or have a better resolution, but as far as how the game runs (As long as not capped), it should run better.... at least, I think so...?

How would it work otherwise? Does it just say no to the better hardware and only use a bit of it? Seems odd...

You actually believe that? LOL You don't think Sony already knows Scorpio's specs? You don't think they have already had all this shot planned out and now they are watching the news waiting to change every day? Tell me you really aren't that naive.

Some people assume that Sony's in the dark about everything and they have nothing planned until Microsoft's conference I guess. And they totally can just redo 2 hours of conference based on Microsoft's announcements.

No OrisisBlack very clearly stated that Sony has two different specs for the Neo at different price points under consideration. He said that today and he said it months ago when the rumors first started circulating.

Yes, I remember. At this point in time, irrespective of whether Neo is this year or early next, it just has to be all but completely locked-down and virtually in production. The talk of scrapping all they've done so far with dev kits etc to upgrade it to match Microsoft is crazy talk.

If that turns out to be the case (even more powerful Neo with Zen) I'll eat your hat and mine.

I did! And honestly it didn't make much sense to me then. They probably had two options at some earlier point but it seems to me they picked one (Jaguar +30% + 36CU Polaris = 4.2TF)

Maybe Osiris could come back and clarify/update what the situation actually is right now?

I never got that big ice cream when I was a kid.

I'm legit jealous... fucking kids these days mang. They have it all :(

They even get to grow up with PS3 and PS4 graphics... like wtf.

But they won't appreciate it as much as us old timers ^^

Right???! Preach!

lots of people aren't going to believe anything is running on a standard PS4 ever again even if Sony explicitly says so

No shit, lol. If these rumors came out at the same time last year, they would claim UC4 runs on the Neo all the way up until launch, and pretend to find 'downgrades' still.

You keep saying this, but what reason is there to believe Sony won't have anything running on a standard PS4?

Because every E3 ever has had games running on better hardware than we currently have available? I'm not saying it's a SONY thing, but with new hardware coming across the board I can't help but be a little skeptical.

It's hilarious. It reminds me of all those people early in the gen saying MS can do this, cut the price, buy exclusives, heavy marketing etc...to increase x1 sales as if Sony was incapable of doing the same.

You would think if people stopped and used some God given common sense, they would realize why this was the best possible move for Sony, but no. Slippery slopes, strawmen, and console war fuckery abound.

I was really trying to hold out some hope that Neo wasn't real, but dammit here we are with console tiers.

I'm wondering if the main purpose of Neo is actually to integrate the external processing box of the PSVR into the console itself.

If I remember correctly, most Sony trailers says things like captured directly from a PS4. They've given us no reason to suspect boosted hardware.

No they don't have all the information they need. Why do you think Sony got all excited after that MS conference when they first announced the Xbox one launch price? Because it gave them a chance to react positively to MSs screw up instantly. They didn't know that was gonna happen, they found out at the conference.

They don't have super spies working for them. They get official info the same way we get it: when its announced, and they blew any chance of getting some more on Monday.

He clarified it today with his red or blue comment. There was no reason to reiterate that statement again months later in response to these latest developments if they were locked in as you say.

House said that improved game performance and support for 4k media are the main reasons for thus upgrade. Time to accept the reality of tiered console gaming. No one should be in denial any more.

I'm glad it's not going to be at E3. We're halfway through the generation, I don't want E3 to be all about new hardware. The PS VR will be more than enough.

It will not run better on Neo out of the box. Based on the rumors/leak, if a game releases after October 2016, it must have a Neo Mode. If the game released before October 2016, they dont need a Neo Mode, they dont have to patch in a Neo Mode, but they can if they want to.

Upgraded Performance on previously released games have to be patched, it doesn't work natively.

Good news, that'll mean all the more focus for games on Sony's end at least at E3 without the shadow of this reveal hanging over their presser.

btw, some of you are coming off like complete system warrior caricatures. Feel sorry for what those of you on gaf who are gonna be around at E3 just to talk about games are gonna be dealing with.

Because every E3 ever has had games running on better hardware than we currently have available? I'm not saying it's a SONY thing, but with new hardware coming across the board I can't help but be a little skeptical.
They could do this every single year by running their games on PC, so nothing has changed. Which you know, but you'd rather feign concern and post the same shit 30 times in this thread.

We are now at the same point...Sony picked the cheaper one it appears from the leaks to send to devs as the MINIMUM spec. Are they locked into that spec before production and revealing it.......

We need more leaks...maybe Osiris knows a bit more, he certainly is enjoying the tease which suggests a change is more than possible. Maybe Sony read all the fan wishes, its a free survey reading forums.... if they did they would see 60 FPS in almost every positive Neo post....

IF Sony had to slow things by a few months, the FT article was a good start for sure...

Yes in some cases. It's pretty much common knowledge that a lot of these games are shown on beefed up PCs.

It is Polaris based, seemingly the same chip that has been revealed in the 480 card which is 5.5TF due to the higher clocks. They can still be working the clocks on their thermal solutions for the APU, and it could still launch higher clocked giving it more Flops than the 4.2.

The leaks we had were lower clock speeds, which seemed to be set at a minimum for that chip, which is usually normal with early kits/testing. Also earlier than what AMD achieved with the 480. So basically, the clocks can change.

Now the question is, will the CPU for the $100 price differentiator.

Question: You think that the PS4 wasn't already priced at $399 before MS's conference?

Probably yes, but dont you also think Sonys conference also probably changed a bit because of what was said at MSs conference? Like that lovely "how we share games on Playstation" video sony made? Wake up people. Sony react to information just like any other company.
