Mirror's Edge Catalyst |OT| Keeping the Faith Alive

I played this for the first time in a couple of weeks today. I had stopped after the opening mission line. Now, I'm able to tackle whatever I want and have been doing things for
the Birdman
, although I assume that's story content too.

It's decently entertaining.

I still have time left on the trial, but picked up the copy from the library today and hope to put a good amount of time into it over the next several days/get it finished.

Gah! Have pity on my poor hands! They were cramping up working through Donkey in an Oven. And looking at the leaderboard I just now realized that you're one spot ahead of me on that one.

I notice you're only .03 out of the top 1%. Surely you can get that!

The double wall climb is the bane of my existence on that one. Either I hit Q too early and don't make it high enough to get a clean jump or I grab the top of the billboard.

Heh, sorry man! You know how it is - when you feel like you're just on the verge of setting a new time you just gotta keep going. :p

And yeah, I was a little miffed when I saw that I was just 1 spot away from top 1% on Under Construction... I might try for it tomorrow, but I can't for the life of me get the end part consistently. I'm doing the same thing (double wallrun) but different things happen almost every time. >.>

And I saw that you beat my Ovendonkey time, good stuff. :D My bane on that dash is the very last climb - I always get decent runs then flub the final wallrun chain that you use instead of the stairs.

Stay on the right and the bottom til the end and vault up off the tables: https://a.pomf.cat/ipgzyl.webm (but with slightly less suck ;P)

Thanks for sharing and taking the time to even put up a recording. I hit 29.09 with your route. :> F that final magrope though... I still can't figure out the proper angle of approach on it.

EDIT: !

Hah. Yeah, I know what you mean on that double wallrun. I swear I do that same thing every time, but sometimes I land on the fence, sometimes I land inside the fence and sometimes I mantle the corner of the building.

I feel conflicted about this one. I had 12:68 and honestly could not for the life of me figure out where people were getting the extra time from since it's so short and there are only so many move combinations that you can make to save time on. I was doing a wall run into a quick climb right at the start. Looked up some runs for this one just to see what was going on and found that people were starting on the ledge instead of having to climb it.

EDIT: DAMN! Nice job on Caleb's Run there! #6!

Just beat the game, finally. I spent a lot of time messing around with the deliveries and such, so it took a while to actually get there. Pretty disappointed in the direction they took for the ending, but whatever. The plot and setting had been letting down the characters from the start.

I really like the direction they took with this game. The open-world design template certainly has its issues, but I always adore exploring any game with fun movement mechanics, and Mirror's Edge is awesome at that. Every time there's a secret bag to find or a billboard to hack, I love solving whatever little platforming puzzle they've placed before me. And some of the single-player missions are really incredible. Pretty much anything that let you just run unmolested, like Benefactor, stood tall with anything from the first game.

The combat is a mixed bag. Traversal moves are an awesome addition, and I feel like the Focus Shield cuts down on a lot of the frustration of running from enemies. The stand-up action is a lot more functional than its predecessor, but it can also get really clunky. The real mistake is all the times that combat is required to advance. Being locked in a room with a bunch of foes often exposes the worst elements of the combat system, and inhibits the game's greatest strength.

There's a lot more I could talk about, but I'm generally really happy with the game, and with all the dashes and time trials I haven't gotten around to, I think some of the best is yet to come.

Maybe it's just my low-RAM PC, but I hope they fix all the framerate issues in the cutscenes that wind up de-syncing the audio. It really ruined a lot of scenes for me.

i really, really liked the game.
moving around the city at different times of the day in combination with the music can be such a joy. the story itself wasn´t super interesting, but the design of the levels within the city (anansi tower, with that view from the top for example) was pretty great most of the time.

going for the plat atm, only missing various documents, recordings and secrets. trying to get 3 stars for each time trial was really challenging, i tried to find a good route for each one, but on some i just had to look up the best shortcuts.

I think my favourite moment in this game's campaign is in the final mission:
You're climbing The Shard, minding your own business, getting pretty high up to one of the levels that isn't just falling apart, you round a corner...

AND THERE ARE LIKE FIFTY GUYS JUST STANDING THERE!

It's caught me by surprise both times I've played that mission now, because I forgot about it the second time around, and it's just a delight. It's the exact moment of Han Solo running into all the Stormtroopers on the Death Star, but it's just such a surprise, and so perfectly executed in gameplay (by which I mean it isn't a cutscene or a QTE or anything 'special', you're just navigating the level as you normally would and all of a sudden you're in trouble). I loved it :p

After all my talk of turning off runner vision and not wanting giant "GO HERE YOU DOOFUS" signs, I'm now finding that anything involving fragile delivery is a complete no-go and even dead drops require a few restarts before I figure out the exact right set of moves to make. Like, sorry dude that I didn't get that stupid flower to your girlfriend in under 55 seconds, she's right in front of me but the game's like "nope." What am I doing wrong? I've unlocked all the traversal moves available to me at the moment but half of them are locked. Do I just need to complete some more missions to unlock advanced moves? Will higher runner vision settings show me the correct path to at least finish the delivery, and I've just been taking the wrong paths all this time? Do I just need to git gud? I don't really know.

I don't think I ever completed a delivery on the first try. The fact that there are large gaps from time to time in the world you can't move across makes it almost impossible to just run in the direction of the marker. So I have to stop and open the map at least twice during the first try (until you memorize your route) which costs speed and then the last challenge of course is finding the red circle. My second try most of the time is 1-2 seconds too slow and the third one usually does it.

I don't know, maybe this becomes easier if you can memorize the city, but my general sense of direction is terrible :D

I really like the game (possible GOTY contender), but can someone explain to me what DICE were thinking when they filled the (endgame) open world with groups of four enemies that call in a helicopter chase as soon as they see you and are impossible to defeat before that point? Note that I am NOT talking about the people guarding the antennas (those encounters are fine), but about the random encounters in open world mode. This happens to me all the time on my way to missions now and it is incredibly annoying. You usually have to run back to the safehouse that you started from, which feels like undignified busywork. A tactic that I have started to use is to quit the game and continue from the last checkpoint, which usually despawns the enemies in question. But that can not be how they meant for us to play the game, right?

Runner Vision goes straight up to Full any time I'm doing a Delivery or Diversion. Those things are so damn hard, they don't provide visible checkpoints, they inexplicably don't have the quick restart option that the Dashes have (seriously, why isn't it there?), and they make you listen to the same dialogue over and over every time you restart. No thanks; I got them over with as painlessly as possible.

But that can not be how they meant for us to play the game, right?

I just immediately jump off a building to my death as soon as I get a helicopter after me. I'm out here doing shit; I don't have time to run all the way back to a hideout and then come back again :p

Eh, deal with them. Since they infinitely respawn, just get your Shield up, punch them quickly. Go hide as they respawn. Rinse repeat for some decent EXP for your unlocks.

Just run past them. As long as you don't attack it takes them a while to call for backup. You won't get the helicopter chase unless you hang around them for too long, and if that happens you can just suicide.

I still wish I could just play without them though.

That's got to be the slowest way to level up (not to mention most tedious)

I had all but 1 unlock... unlocked by the time I finished the main story (and the side quests), there's no need to grind XP.

Been trucking through this and not really enjoying it, but I just got the Magrope, which seems like a grappling hook???

Maybe this game is alright.

AHAHAHAHA! I got it!

I was stuck at 18:56 for the longest time. I don't think it would be possible to recreate that run as I think I somehow rolled off the building at the end? I'm not entirely sure what I did. Not 100% sure how I made this run either. All I know is that I slide off the building and landed perfectly on top of the fence so I didn't have to roll out of the landing. I probably could have shaved a few more milliseconds off because once I cleared the building I had already started to hold R to restart, but the landing shocked me into letting go of the button in time.

Anybody else get a bug where the map doesn't show you where to go next? I'm at a mission where I need to meet up with Noah but nothing on the map shows up :/

Holy shit, the background music that plays while you're just running around exploring just changed my game for the first time. What it switched to is heavenly.

I have no idea if it changes to the same track for everyone, but it was slow and choir-like. Anyone know if that track is on Youtube somewhere?

edit: found it I think, I don't recall the bass beat in the version I heard in game but maybe I just didn't hear it. https://youtu.be/bP2UEY5KXsA?t=1356 definitely much longer in game too.

After the original Mirror's Edge PhysX demos the total lack of physics in the environment in this game is a damn shame. Feels like a downgrade.

Even after I could play the original with PhysX, I'm happy with the new one. PhysX always felt shoehorned in (glass pieces didn't need to have sophisticated individual physics), and I still like the Catalyst canvas cloth blowing in the wind on the Anansi tower. In the original game that required PhysX -- don't know if the new one does.

It's especially nice that lighting can change now.

So I just completed the story for this game, and then capped off my playthrough by finishing my remaining sidequests (the bigger, "proper" sidequests, not the extra activities littered throughout the map). Ultimately had Faith maxed out by the end, and playing on PS4.

I did appreciate the original game a ton for trying to be novel back in its day. I feel like I felt its influence in some other games since. And ultimately, I come away from Catalyst feeling like it's just as flawed as the original game.

That said, it's a bit disappointing. Clearly, a lot of effort was made to make this game a push forward for the franchise, but I think the open world design feels a bit flat, the story lacks hook and nuance, and the combat is, to me, actually worse than the first game.

Now I don't personally think taking Mirror's Edge and trying to expand it to open world is inherently bad, but the simple, abstract aesthetics don't mesh really well with it. I'd have liked to see a bit more grit and variety to make everything feel more lived-in in a natural way, personally, and I actually do feel like the original game did have more of that sort of element to its otherwise-similar aesthetic. Catalyst feels unfortunately really quite empty by comparison, even when you're going through strings of residences. Even though they're high-end residences, I still have a hard time believing that it's so clean and smooth everywhere. Perhaps it's due to image quality problems but I feel like there were multiple times in the game where I had a difficult time recognizing pathways due to the similar nature of many of the aesthetic elements, it all kind of just blurred together into a less-than-coherent (though not entirely incoherent) mass sometimes. To me, it felt like the more focused design in the missions felt like more entertaining dexterity puzzles than navigation recognition puzzles, and that's the sort of approach that I prefer in Mirror's Edge -- a test of keeping my momentum rather than recognizing where I need to be going at all. I think the first game sort of excelled at this, since it was a more focused level-based design, and part of my does still believe that this type of approach can even work in an open world setting, but as it stands, I feel like Catalyst drops the momentum far too often for navigational puzzle approach that I just find extremely unappealing compared to the moments of dexterity and speed.

That's exactly why I can't really stand the combat in either of the games, but I think Catalyst is actually worse. The original Mirror's Edge felt like it had systems that allowed the player to more deftly handle combat scenarios, and Catalyst feels like it tries to marry techniques for avoidance and momentum into the combat, but it largely feels underwhelming, momentum-killing, and lacks a sense of visual and tactile feedback that I would hope it to achieve if it is going to stop my running. Many light attacks still sort of enter into a semi-lock-on perspective, even some of the ones that are meant to maintain momentum, and the heavy attacks seem to stop things almost entirely. Combat feels like it magnetizes the player toward it, even when the player is trying to avoid a fight, and to me it comes across as a big nuisance.

If there ever is another Mirror's Edge game, and I kind of hope there is, I sort of want to see it handed off to another studio for a try. I was super excited when Catalyst was finally confirmed and revealed, and I bought into a lot of the marketing about how they intended to improve this one over the original, and there's clearly a lot of production effort visible when I do play the game, but it all still seems to fall a bit flat to me. Not outright bad, but not great, either. I enjoyed some moments immensely in this game, but I am left wondering if DICE is actually capable of fully realizing this series themselves. Even though I personally feel I'd be more interesting in seeing another studio take a crack at it, I don't necessarily think it'd be great for that next studio to reboot again. I didn't find the story particularly well written or intriguing this time around, but I feel like it did leave off in an interesting enough place that I don't mind seeing it continue.

Any way to fix it? The screen says push left on the dpad but I tried that.

Lighting's definitely better, yeah. I don't need ultra-sophisticated physics, but there's a lot of stuff that should exhibit SOME kind of moving behavior that is instead completely, artificially rigid.

ok ok... NOW... now I can stop. *dead

Scenic Route... no clue how I could shave the seconds I need for the 1% cutoff, but one Youtube video I found has some pause-buffering/glitching going on to get up a ramp sooooo yeah that can fuck off.

Phew

Edit: Also, never launching the game again so I don't have to see these knocked down ;P

Im gonna be glad when I get these last 2-3 unlocks and can easily ignore the runner activities. Some of these just have baffling design. Whats the point of putting a diversion in the construction yard area, only for all of the ksec checkpoints to be in a different city district - AND 75% of the checkpoints a retread of an earlier diversion mission at that?

I really enjoy the main missions, side missions, gridnode runs and finding how to scale the hackable billboards. Everytime I start feeling down on the game its during the runner stuff.

Sadly, my game is glitched. No matter what I do, the main mission diamond will not show up for "Mischief Maker." I don't want to restart the game :/ Hopefully they release a patch. Apparently it is happening to others as well.

Well, I think any time you need to talk to Noah he's in the Zephyr Transit Hub aka the Lair so set a waypoint there and see if you can still progress.

I made a mistake--it's Nomad. He keeps radioing me tellling me that I need to go through the fans in the Transit hub but every time I try I can't get throuh.

Be sure to disrupt the fans with your doohickey so they stop moving. It's F by default and when you first get the ability it's kinda finicky where you need to stand in front of it to activate.

I don't remember picking it up but maybe my memory just sucks. Pretty sure you just have it suddenly once the mission starts.

Played for a couple more hours this afternoon. I'm enjoying it. It's actually pretty fun.

That said, some of the issues I had with the first are still there, like Faith not always jumping properly or the controls not being perfectly responsive. But it is what it is. The storyline is also kind of bland thus far.

I'm having some fun running around the city, though.

This game would make Ubisoft proud with the amount of busywork they filled the open world with. But damn if I didn't hunt down all of those over 700 collectibles in this game. 100% world progress. Now Mirror's Edge can rest in pieces.

I saw the explosion, and met with Drogan to give him the drive. He made me bring down that gigantic chandelier.

Now I'm on the next main mission.

How far am I? I technically only have the game for a week.

You're about a third of the way through the story I think? You can check your progress by pulling up the map and then checking your player profile which should be marked in the top right corner.

Honestly, I never really got the point about complaining about collectables. No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to get each one
