The music for the studio zone or whatever its called seriously gives me japanese Sonic CD vibes which is an excellent soundtrack compared to the more atmospheric US soundtrack.

If all the stages have that kind of charm while having better level and boss design than Sonic CD ill be very happy.

I am honestly baffled that anyone could find the incredibly minor, utterly-imperceptible-to-anyone-but-the-most-obsessive-fans differences in the Retro Engine Sonic games to be dealbreaking, especially given how much they add.

Well, I died in Chemical Plant Zone due to incorrect programming. It's not exactly perfect in a lot of little areas.

Just woke up, watched the Project Sonic 2017 trailer and was very worried by the tone they're going for even though I loved Colors and Generations.

Scrolled down Gaming discussion and saw another Sonic thread.
This looks fantastic!!! This is exactly what I want, the pixel art is beautiful and the levels seem to be super interesting. Very happy to see Christian Whitehead is involved. Finally, the possibility of a good 2D Sonic game, it's been a while.
Aside from Freedom Planet of course.

I'm super hyped for this, but God why do they have to stick with Sonic CD Sonic? Why not go with the superior Sonic 3 Sonic? Also are all levels from all 3 (4?) Sonic games revisited? Also it looks like Dr Eggman has his Death Eggmup and running once again?

I love the artwork and animations. So much.

When do we get to see Tails and Knuckles?

And I'm so glad it's just Tails and Knuckles and not all of his shitty friends. Plus it doesn't look to be taking place in the "human world" like all the 3D games have since. I hate that about modern Sonic. Sonic looks better when he's in a colorful environment with robotic enemies and animals. Not in a grey boxy city with humans that don't even react to the fact that a giant blue hedgehog and his friends are wandering around.

If this takes off I wouldn't mind the shitty friends being in some future iteration of this game if they introduce decent gameplay mechanics to justify their existence.

Team Chaotix is still a bunch of well-designed Genesis sprites and like big the cat is.... you know

I'd be cool with "metal sonic kidnaps Amy" and getting a couple gtfo of there levels as her, the games don't need some adventure-style narrative tbh but I do feel like choice characters could be cool to have in at some point.

Especially since the game won't have ridiculous cutscenes and awful acting. An alligator with headphones on is an objectively neat guy imo

As cool as this looks, I have some issues with it, mainly graphics related. Are the Greenhill Zone assets totally reused? They don't look different at all, save for maybe the waterfalls in the background?

Also that disgusting programmed rotation of sprites that started in Sonic Advance 1 seems to be continued here. In regards to Sonic's sprites in particular, I have no idea why they did this, since they look like they're slightly modified versions of the Genesis counterparts. Sprite rotation always screams lazy to me, but I guess it's a small team.

Everything else seems pretty cool, and the gameplay looks solid, but I'll wait for some impressions. It seems to at least be in capable hands though, which is to say, not Sonic Team's.

Id rather they get each character down solidly, with their own unique gimmicks, before adding any more.

Though, the question is there, will there be DLC at some stage?

Love the idea but disappointed that they didn't clean up the graphics.
They can keep the original aesthetic and character design but also improve the graphics for modern times.
Yes I would've loved to see Sonic with Rayman Legends type of graphics, kind of hand-drawn, and in 4K for the Neo and Scorpio. But this release is purely for the nostalgics so it's really not needed I guess, judging by the response in this thread it's pretty much spot on what the fans wanted.

It's pretty easy to die or get permanently stuck in a wall in CPZ due to bugs in the original game, too.

I dunno, where I died, I've never died there before. The rotating blocks midway through Act 2 shouldn't kill me the way I approached it. Never has in any of the originals or anniversary collections or in emulation. Happened consistently in the mobile remakes.

Looks like the Saturn 2D Sonic game that never was. I think I'm down.

Too bad the graphics, while pretty great from an artistic pixel art standpoint, don't look as clean as in Sonic 1 and 2 and kind of give me a Freedom Planet vibe instead. Still, judging from the Gamestop gameplay video, it actually looks kind of fun.

This looks like it's going to be great, but why resort to Genesis-style graphics? If they nail the traditional gameplay then I don't think anybody would complain about higher resolutions, prettier textures and smoother animations.

For GHZ, from what I can tell:

1) Coloring has been updated across the board (mostly a little brighter and more saturated).

2) The background tiles have been completely redrawn from scratch. Mountains, waterfalls, etc.

3) Foreground objects and tiles have received some minor touchups but are mostly the same (save coloring). Certain animated objects, like flowers, have smoother animations with new animation frames.

4) Badniks have been substantially reshaded and given smoother animations as well.

5) Some new objects have been added that previously didn't exist in GHZ, like Emerald Hill-style corkscrews.

The retro look doesn't do much for me. Same reason I skipped on Megaman 9 and 10. If you're going to do a new 2D entry, do it with high resolution hand-drawn graphics. We already have multiple great Genesis Sonic games, and I can always replay them. Give me something fresh.

Those maniacs

I knew that with all that good work Taxman was putting in he deserved a shot at a new game (but didn't need to be Sonic) - him and Stealth should knock this out of the park

Yo this is what Sonic 4 SHOULD HAVE BEEN. I'd pay for a physical release of this!

They are going to have lots of new and detailed animations added it seems. That corkscrew run was a new animation or at least with some added frames.

Sorry that you skipped some of the best MM games in the classic series just because they were 8-bit. I get that retro artstyles are tiring but come on.

The Drop Dash also looks real cool. I'm assuming that when Sonic's in the air, spamming the jump button will make Sonic "rev". That sounds like a real cool way to keep Sonic speeding around (and make him unique to Knuckles & Tails)

I'd love this but it's just not feasible imo. This is a project with a bunch of smaller devs and I'd imagine the budget isn't quite there for hand drawn high quality animations.

Just watched the trailer agin, something looks off when sonic goes through the loops I can't put my finger on it.Also, what's up with the music, why no FM synth?

Christian Whitehead (Taxman) made a very nice engine for old Sonic, but anything new will feel like a romhack. He's also a Sonic CD apologist, and this game reeks of Sonic CD thus far.

Who is Headcannon?

PagodaWest seem to have only made some iOS games.

I have my fingers crossed, but I'm pretty dubious of this.

This is how Sonic must look nowadays.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
This looks great. I've yet to see the direct feed footage from Gamespot, but it already has a great look. And damn, that title screen is exciting and gorgeous. PC SKU, here I come. Seriously, those sprites, how Sonic spins in the title screen, woah.

...now, about no NX. It seems PagodaWest Games is just five people. + Whitehead + Headcannon = 7 people. Considering how small the team is, I'm actually not so surprised, then: it's very possible they didn't get a dev kit yet (while major third parties - as also highlighted by today's other announcement - did, as well as - IMHO - some bigger indie developers ). Also, I would say they're so small that it's better for them to think about developing the main versions for now, while thinking about ports for other platforms later. It's a similar line-of-thought to what happens in the indie scene with games from very small teams coming to specific platforms at first and then expanding on others later.

A port for NX releasing alongside the other versions would be possible if there's another developer who's up for the porting job: for example, Epic Mickey 2 was announced at first for PS3/360/Wii, and, at the September preview event, the Wii U version was announced as well, and it released at the same time as the others.
Not the best example, I know, but I wanted to point out how a later announcement and simultaneous release are a possibility, in theory
. Still, I'm expecting a port to happen anyway later on.

EDIT: Ah, yes, as others said, now I consider this the real Sonic 4, honestly :p

Pretty much. That said, they seem to be making the most out of the sprite set they do have by adding a ton of new, smooth animations. That's far better than just ripping the sprites wholesale like Mega Man 9. (Not that it stopped Mega Man 9 from being a great game.)

It looks great, it really does. This is what the series needs- a reset. Go back to basics and build from here, maintaining quality in every aspect.
I for one am excited. If you're not feeling excited for this, you were part of the reason we've been getting sub par sonic games for over a decade.

Headcannon is Stealth, who is known in the Sonic ROM hacking scene for working on Sonic Megamix, among many other contributions (SonED, Knuckles in Sonic 1, etc.).

PagodaWest was initially formed by some folks who worked on Sonic 2 HD.

There's a certain charm to retro style that reminds me of a time where gaming felt like it had magic to it. I will always welcome them feeding nicely polished nostalgia as long as they respect it.

This looks excellent. I'm hyped for all the Easter eggs, bonuses, speed runs, new sprites and animations, the tracks, and the bosses. Fucckkkk.

He's no CD apologist. Is just that CD is that good (and honestly this doesn't look anything like CD to me).

Also this makes me doubt we'll ever see Sonic 1/2/3&K using Christan Whitehead's nice engine on PC/PS4/etc.

That Green Hill Zone revisit looks like the worst type of throw back.

its cause they are doing sprite rotation. genesis sonic had a handful of sprites when he went through loops so it was never perfectly smooth.

I just realized that I can't get my Sonic fix on ps4, there are 0 games for it right?

Sega is missing out, they should give us a sonic generations ps4 version.

I heard colors is great, could that game ever be ported successfully to ps4, or it would require motion controls?
