I am ecstatic that they chose to make a game with unabashedly beautiful spritework. It gives the game a very authentic feel without holding back to do coom visual things as well, such as the drapes that only show Sonic's shadow. I was big into the sprite scene as a kid and love that people I actually knew are collaborating to make this game

Sonic Generations 3DS is on sale btw

They should release playable shadow and vector the crocodile as dlc

Just make the thing a complete celebration of what sonic game hacks have accomplished over the years

If they do that then they might as well go all out and put shit like Yeth in the game.

the little dots on the TV Sonic explodes out of it are the Game Gear logo

Stop using touched up sprites from the Sonic prototypes, Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix. The blue leg blur running animation, the fist pump end animation, the score/time/rings text, the life icon, the blue ring box, the CD Sonic sprite with heavier colour/shading - they're literally all staples of fangames dating back to the early 00s. It's not exactly a bad thing, but it comes across as a bit too unprofessional.

Oh boy... here comes the fucking nitpicking...

It's the reason I could never bother to register on Sonic Retro... a bunch of old guys complaining about the smallest things everyday (around 2002~2009 it was simply impossible to be calm on that forum). And one of the reasons why I stayed away from Sonic for a long, long time.

You wouldn't be happy with anything they would give you, just admit it already.

Studiopolis music is AWESOME. Holy cow! It brings back good memories of the OG Sonic Team. I love how they use the PSO Synth in the music. OP as ****

People calling this a paid romhack are something else and make me wish that trailer hadn't shown Green Hill at all, yikes. Game looks like the originals but totally different at the same time, it's gorgeous, like what a Saturn 2D Sonic game should have been even. And hell Taxman even reworked what were supposed to be ports of the original games completely, so I'm sure this being a new game must have an insane amount of work and care put into it.

Looks good, for what in tries to achieve, but lacks the charm of pixel art.
Yeah, I remember this project from years ago and never liked the look of it. I really don't like the idea that got popular around the time that clean, redrawn HD assets are the obvious evolution of pixel art. I can appreciate the work put into projects like that, but to me they just look super soulless, it reminds me of those countless Chinese knockoffs of Pokemon for mobile.

Sonic is such a weird franchise, at least the fan base is. They actually follow through with what the general public wants: Games that follow up on what made the classic games great, and people actually complain! They have a formula for 3D games that works, finally, and there are fans clamouring for games more akin to 06... why...

It's just the result of trying too many different things with a series all at once. All those different things SEGA tries out end up getting their own fanbase, hence why we have people wanting Sonic Adventure 3, other people wanting more boost games like Unleashed, Colors and Generations, people wanting classic styled 2D games, and hell there's people out there that want them to follow up on Lost World.

I mean, it really is, just pull out a sprite sheet and compare. That's the Sonic 1/2/CD sprite with the usual tweaks you see in fangames. The super peel out run adapted with the Sonic prototype blue leg blur (which for some reason the fangame community has a real obsession with), the Sonic 1 prototype act clear animation, a stronger shade of blue and more shading. There is no inspired about it, they've not been redrawn, they've been touched up and in the same way that most fangames do.

I'm not railing on the visual quality or anything, but take the Sega logo off it and people would think that it's a Sonic fangame. It doesn't feel quite as professional as Freedom Planet.

sonic 2 sprite is just the sonic 1 sprite recolored with a different face and walk animation, fuckin fangame quality bullshit imo

The second half of green hill zone from gameplay I have seen feels off compared to the original layout, that's the only thing I dislike about it so far.

You can't just bolt on another 50% on a stage without copying the same flow and approach, it's messy.

At first I thought it was gonna be another Sonic 4 situation.... AND THEN THEY SHOW ME THIS, holy shit, I was hit by nostalgia. I grew up with Sonic, the Genesis was my first home console. I can't wait.

You mean going forward and finishing the stage in One minute instead of the 30 seconds that the original could be beaten?

No i'm not on about how fast, i'm talking about the layout itself.

They threw in what feels like sonic cd layouts to the very first sonic level you play in the original trilogy and it feels wrong and out of place for such an early level.

It's absolute retro gaming perfection. It's everything myself and many other have wanted for years. Couldn't give a shit about Sonic being 3-D, trying to innovate, more side characters or even HD sprites just give me classic Sonic with platforming perfection at great speeds.

This right here is the real Sonic the Hedgehog.

I'm confused about the people saying this comes off as a fangame. Despite all of the sprite work people are pointing out as fangame staples, none of that matters to the population as a whole because most non-ultra Sonic fans haven't played fangames, or many of them, so they wouldn't know these are 'staples' in fan games. And there isn't anything innately bad about their inclusion in Sonic Mania anyway. I'm starting to think that there isn't anything Sega can do to completely please the Sonic fans-- if Sega hiring competent fans-turned-developers to create an original game with authentic physics and a look that evokes the look and feeling of a lost 32 bit 2D Sonic game isn't enough to please you, then nothing will.

I'm buying the shit out of this, and then I'm buying it again, and I'm going to do everything I can to convince my friends to buy it, and then I'm probably going to buy some copies for my friends that refuse to buy it. This is Sega squarely listening to their fans and actually executing on that idea, not some half assed 2.5D effort that was shitted out with the noise of dying cats

That reminds me that the Sonic CD HD demo gave me headaches real quick. I hope this uses a different graphical built, even though I don't know what Sonic CD did exactly to fuck me up like that.

Classic Vex is pretty rad, to be honest.

Not a fan of the modern design though. Too short and too fat. Tall Vector with the walkman for life.

Took advantage of the Sonic humble bundle. Turns out I already own Sonic 2 on Steam!

So, here is a Sonic 2 code if anyone wants it!

The game should have secret characters IMO.
Like Espio and Army playing similar to Sonic for example. Classic Amy and Vector would be cool to have too.

i sort of had that impression watching the first act too. it's kind of stupid how there's an upper path randomly suspended in the air which eventually leads...into a cave? alternate goal posts would be cool, but the implementation seems a little amateur

i like all the easter eggs and shit, but this isn't supposed to feel like a fan game.

iirc, they said they wanted us to tear the trailer apart so...
