Yeah, I miss those as well. Would like to seem them added, or done in a future article. With the new PS4 models DF had a nice chart showing the heat differences accompanied by a heatmap picture of two models.Dat power consumption. :0
Good job, would've liked to see the difference in heat.
this new console refresh from Sony and Microsoft is a terrible precedent...one of the biggest advantages of consoles over PC was their lifespan...now we're getting mini-PC refreshes not even 2 years into their life cycle...
it's not the same, as the old PS4 (and Xbox) will not be the 'best' PS4...previously with consoles you were guaranteed the best and only version for the life of the console
Well..according to the chart in the OP, the S is clearly louder during Blu-ray playback...
The fuck am I reading.
In what world is a PS4 less noisy than a Xbox One?
You were saying? In what world is a PS4 less noisy than a Xbox One?
In a world where we can test things. Again this is about blu-ray playback
PS4
XBox One
The One S is even louder at 47db

For its power draw the XB1 has a poor non-customised cooling solution.

And while we carried out these tests, we also broke out the sound meter to measure the acoustics of the new console compared to the launch version. We placed the meter right next to the machine, so don't think of these numbers as representative of the experience, count on it more as a comparison point between the two iterations of Microsoft hardware. As things stand, the bottom line is clear: the new console has significant power efficiency advantages over the older model thanks to the process shrink, but the trade-off is a louder machine - most likely down to the reduced form factor.
Typically we note a 3dB increase in noise from the Xbox One S - a touch disappointing for a machine with media credentials, where really we'd want as discreet an experience as possible. However, the 42-44dB noise factor is still a huge improvement over PlayStation 4, which is up to 10dB louder under load. Xbox One S is still a larger console than its Sony competitor, but it houses a larger cooling assembly and put simply, a larger fan spinning more slowly makes less noise.
Eh? I think in this case, the problem is not the cooling solution but the sound of the drive.
Nice try to spin the message, but you may have overlooked this:

To me it looks the way that the disc drive adds the most to the noise!
nobody said there is anything wrong with the Xbone S cooling system did they? Simply that during Blu-ray playback it's louder...Eh? I think in this case, the problem is not the cooling solution but the sound of the drive.
Nice try to spin the message, but you may have missed this important part of the report:

To me it looks the way that the disc drive adds a fair chunk to the noise on top of the noise increase due to the slimmer form factor and the included power brick.!
So what you are saying is Digital Foundry has a PS4 with a Nidec fan. Unfortunately not everyone is that lucky. At least the Xbox One always sounds the same.
No, what is being said is the PS4 and OG Bone are quieter during Blu-ray playback lol
No. read my post above about it being idle. also note that he says UNDER LOAD. If anything Richard is adding spin by simply not mentioning that when he says UNDER LOAD he means playing a game.

You do realize Sony uses two different fan manufactures right? Every single person that says their PS4 is quiet has a Nidec fan. Must be nice but not everyone is that lucky. I have a dB meter. I can provide you some hard numbers later.
Really, you are more interested about idle noise than under load? Why that?
Okay maybe you have running your console all day long even you don't use it which I don't (waste of energy/money IMO) but I would be always more interested about the noise while I playing games and watch movies on my console just because of the distraction factor of the noise while doing it.
But maybe I am a rare bread ....
is he talking about the OGBone, or the S?Three said!

lol first you argued that it was basically impossible for a PS4 to be quieter than an Xbone..now this? Keep shifting those goalposts my friend, eventually you'll be right

That's exactly what's being talked about...while watching Blu-ray movies the PS4 and OGBone are quieter lol
List Wars: The Fan Years (lol)
lol, true. I'll refrain from adding to the discussion any further, it seems to have taken a wrong turn into hostility.
Wrong? No. But take a look at what I quoted.nobody said there is anything wrong with the Xbone S cooling system did they?
There is no spin going on...there are objective facts...both the OG Bone and PS4 are quieter than the S during Blu-ray playback...
These numbers are odd. My XBone is definitely quieter than my PS4, at idle and especially while gaming. Playing Uncharted or Doom makes it sound like my PS4 is going to explode, lol. My Xbone never makes a peep. Those numbers suggest they sound the same at idle, which has not been the case for me. My PS4 is louder no matter the situation. I really wish I could test this thing out in my living room before giving up my OG XB1, but I'll need the money for the purchase.
Wrong? No. But take a look at what I quoted.
Nidec fan on the left, quiet. Fan made by Delta on the right means jet noise PS4 even at idle. I bet $10 that DF has one with a Nidec fan.
Read into it. Compare both fans(I had both in my PS4) and then eat crow.
I was only talking about the noise created from bluray playbackI give you that the Xbox One S is louder while playing any type of disc. Thats what I was saying from the beginning. Just reread my first comment in response to three.
Btw I hope using that avatar and name is not a sign you are the same type of character like the NPC in the game. Would be telling!
Based on what df tested, yes. We don't know how much that relates to a consensus when there are many people reporting loud consoles. It could be that it's not a widespread issue but it also could be that it is.
huh? My name refers to my favorite baseball team, and my avatar is from a movie...

They wouldn't because I believe Nidec fans were introduced some time after the launch batch. The one DF tested was a launch console. The newer CUH 1200 models are even quieter. Also this is a little different to "In what world is a PS4 quieter than an XB1" because if you knew that these PS4s existed you would have been able to answer your own question right?
What? PS4 follows the laptop route for its cooling design while the Xbox One takes the desktop route for its cooling design. Both are custom solutions based on existing designs. And why does it matter? It's the result that matters. What about it? The cooling design is poor in that it has not been designed at all. The XB1 has a lower TDP an external power supply with it's own fan and makes just as much noise when idle. I think it's fair to say the cooling solution design is poor because it isn't custom but that there is nothing "wrong" with it because it gets the job done in any case.
Nah.Long time no see, famous Albert Penello.
Xbox one S closer to PS4 performance now?
...who expected differently? that was not what the S was about
Lmao I just realized now that you guys were talking about blu-ray playback. I'm a fucking idiot 🤔
Richards numbers are for games. No, you are not. We have anecdotal references from users and from Richard from df and that is what it comes down to in the end.
Yes, df provided actual numbers but users say that their ps4, if anything, is louder that their bone.

Nah.
Nah.
“df's“ numbers. It doesn't matter who anyway.
Just letting you know Richards numbers are for games not Blu-RayNo, you are not. We have anecdotal references from users and from Richard
you said this

So the poor designed system stays on the same sound level, even under load while the great designed system gets noticeably louder the more load it's under? I'm confused by your logic.Yes and laptops have custom designs that offer good cooling in a small space. now imagine a less powerful laptop in a desktop case that makes just as much noise when idle and you realise why the design isn't exactly great and could have been better.

Being guarunteed the "best" box while its tech rapidly becomes obsolete, is not the "advantage" of console ownership. How would your OG Xbox/ PS4 experience be improved by companies NOT releasing improved hardware mid-cycle?
Being pedantic doesn't help in the topic we are talking about, Three. You posted df numbers, I said Richard who works for df but it wasn't actually him. Yes. Again, it's not important who measured it at df.
