OP and title update to add the box art thing... and still nobody wishes to discuss the FACT that they removed "On-line (Optional)" from the PSN Store game description some time between July 27 and release... :/

Do I need to link it again?

People either don't understand plain English, are wilfully ignorant or just pop in to say "well, he never said it had multiplayer" because they are the same people who said "but what do you do!?" because they can't fucking understand him because he's a cute, shy little Englishman.

Not at all. Don't be a goofball about it.

Over the course of development, I saw the guy give mixed answers in both directions. I've seen him say that it's not a multiplayer game multiple times and go back on that multiple times. I could care less about his appearance (seriously?), his messaging never gave me any clarity. Burn him at the stake for being ambiguous, but if you 100% thought multiplayer was going to be in, then I'm not the one who was being willfully ignorant. I'm not the one who loses my shit when iffy information ends up not being in my favor.

5 quintillion planets, which if you subdivided among 10 billion players (reality is maybe a few million, so further subdivide that by a magnitude of 1000-10000), would result in what, 500 million planets per player, in a game with no way to easily find each other even if you could see each other, and we're worried about whether there's multiplayer or not?

500 million planets per player and yet people are already finding planets that have been discovered by other players. The majority of people are going to ignore the vast majority of planets and just follow the path to the centre. Naturally those paths will probably intersect.

Haha great fucking argument. Stay mad and salty as fuck over NOTHING then.

Sean and Hello Games explicitly said on many occasions : THIS IS NOT A MULTIPLAYER GAME.

And he's also explicitly said you have the ability to see and meet and interact to some degree with other players if you happen to be on the same planet at the same time.

How is this so hard to understand?

Not at all. Don't be a goofball about it.

But he's also, in at least one interview, mentioned how he doesn't see Dark Souls or Journey as multiplayer, in the same way No Man's Sky was talked about as not being "multiplayer". The meeting players and stuff was always talked about in a vauge, mystery way but always distanced from something like CoD or Destiny where you explicitally join people through menu options and always likened to something like Journey or Dark Souls (with the shades) where it's done without your input to random people.

Seriously, I don't think anyone expected this to be a game where you hop into a PSN party, click "join game", get matchmade with your party into a Team Death Match and then go build a sand castle out of Minecraft blocks on your private server. People did however expect, on the rare chance it ever happened, that when two people were on the same planet at the same time that they would be able to see each other and interact to some degree (see the interviews where he mentions "a little bit" to a question on griefing and "you can't see yourself but can see other players and it's th eonly way you'll know what you look like").

Journey was random instanced multiplayer. That doesn't equate to meeting with friends. The guy has said a ton of contradicting shit regarding the game and usually went a bit more in-depth on how it wouldn't work.

He was a knucklehead for never giving a clear statement, but you all were fooling yourselves if at any point you thought you were going to be flying around with your mates. He talks about for like two minutes in that interview linked above.

And we can find ten over videos where he says it wasn't possible. Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but I wasn't betting my hopes and dreams on such mixed messaging.

I think he's wrong for being unclear, but I never thought it was going to be in from what I saw during development. Showing me a video after the fact doesn't change that.
Ya can't even find strangers, but he absolutely said you could all go to the same planet and after some time searching you can go find each other. He lied or changed plans without telling people honestly.

I cant believe we still have to put this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE0nuW-mQ8A

Watched this for the first time. There's nothing in that video that tells me anything other than I might see someone else at random (maybe) or that "griefing" is anything other than leaving a message, or a trap, or just talking trash while on the same planet...LOL.

I guess it's as vague as everything else.

I'm still on the wait and see train. Can't decide if I'm buying the game soon or not.

I just saw they are trying again tonight, they seem to think the servers are still unstable

They have been for me, both last night and this morning. The icon on the pause screen keeps flitting between off and online. It's my biggest bugbear with the game as I assume uploads to Atlas are pointless when the game isn't connecting to servers.

A minor feature was dropped during the lengthy development of a game. Internet explodes.

I wish I was surprised.

Basically it comes down to this: Want to enjoy a game? Stay away from NeoGAF until you've finished it. Such negativity over something no one will even remember in a couple of months.

Here let me spell it out for you again then so you can play otger games you actually enjoy instead of trying to turn a game into something that its not and getting angry over it.

NO MAN SKY IS NOT A MULTIPLAYER GAME. IT WILL NEVER BE ONE.
Then why did the developer say on multiple occasion that certain multiplayer features would be there, while they aren't? And why can't that be confirmed or denied AFTER the game has launched now.

Lol damn Gog.com throwing some subtle shade here:

The topic of this thread is about not seeing other players. Your post is off-topic. Go have fun with the game yourself.
Yeah I guess he did expect it! I mean he is obviously furious that he has been "misled" and "lied to".

If only you could see other people this game would be so much better!!

/s.

People really need to stop bitching and have fun playing the game. Its a one of a kind experience I can tell ypu that much.

I wish I was surprised.

I don't think the feature not currently being implemented is causing the backlash.

It's more down to the way the message has been given to consumers. It's not clear, that's all people are asking for at this stage. No one likes to be left guessing.

Simply stating that it's something that will be in the game but currently not implemented would have drastically cut down on the reactions.

Obviously you'll still get a few people complaining, but it's the internet and people love to find anything to complain about.

No one would've exploded if anyone from Hello Games just came out before release and said definitively "Yeah this got cut, sorry. Shit happens. We might try to bring it back later."

Instead it's been radio silence, which is unacceptable even for a team as small as them. All it took was one tweet to prevent any of this. A simple Yes or No answer.

Sean and Hello Games explicitly said on many occasions : THIS IS NOT A MULTIPLAYER GAME.

But then...why would they say that the only way you could see what you look like is through another player?

Why would they say that the chances of finding another player are incredibly slim?

Why would you ignore the entire thread when this has been shown through videos over and over?

Let's hear your excuse, because there has yet to be an apologist here that has convinced everyone.

Yeah I haven't connected stable yet and I am worried someone comes along and renames all my shit.

He was definitely wrong in the way he provided the information, no doubt about that. I'm just saying that with all his mixed messaging, i don't get why folks thought they'd be meeting up and flying with their buds. I'm just a pessimist though.

You are preordering on the bases of vague implications that if it did happen that two people were able to meet up, they could see eachother?

This is why people have preordered? Who are these people? Can we get a show of hands here? Some of yall seem delusional and honstly getting a little crazy in here.

This game is a beautiful experience. I dont need anyone to stand beside me to know this.

It doesn't matter what you value more in a game. That's beside the point. This is about the principle of the matter. Unless there's a technical issue or the feature is on the way in a near-future patch, Sean Murray lied on Stephen Colbert's show and a bunch of other places. This is not something to debate, this is a fact.

I understand that a lot of people here are very much in love with the game and desire it to be the greatest thing ever, but this is a problem whether you go all-out with the mental gymnastics or not.

It really wouldnt. Yall would find some other shit to bitch over.

This game has been getting critisicm from people who seem to stupid to read a single english sentence, and yes these are the " what do you do though???" people.

Now they dont have the game and are on a crusade to turn thus into a forced multiplayer thing.

If it is not, then why did the developer say on multiple occasions it was there and why are they refusing to say anything about it now.

It's just strange and confusing.

I think you are more upset about this then about 99% of people in this thread judging by the tone.

He never straight up said before the past week that it was not possible, just very unlikely. Combined with the handful of quotes where he did say you could see other players, and I could think you could see how others felt mislead.

He lied? Maybe the feature was there and didnt make it. You know like a million other games have shit that doesnt make it.

Remember when Bioshock Infinite showed gameplay trailers that looked like very cool encounters but in the full game all you got were waves of enemies? Mechanics that were just gone?

Where was the outrage for that? Oh right there wasnt. I didnt see people calling for Ken Levines head on a pike then.

The issue isn't how important multiplayer is to the game, the issue is people are feeling misled. If they had came out and said before release that they had to cut multiplayer, this wouldn't be a thread.

When someone asks you "Will you be able to play with your friends?" and you say "Yes", that's kind of the idea people are going to get.

When someone gives another 10 interviews and refutes that, I start to wonder what the fuck is going on rather than act surprised and shocked when they end up being full of crap. You act like he's never said the opposite multiple times.

This is a much better YouTube video to reference:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVrDaudzn64

Not only does it showcase many, many more times where Sean said definitively that there is multiplayer, but around 10 seconds in he even refers to cooperation with other players as necessary - an unequivocal statement that means multiplayer was initially touted as being far more integral to the game.

And then the video contrasts with Sean's statement on the day before release "clarifying" that this is a single player game in what is clearly a severe backtrack from his previous statements.

There is no way to spin this as not lying, try as hard as you might.

People really need to stop this, or should I accuse you of being wilfully blind to how the game works just to push your agenda? Anyway, you point out what Murray says as though the only way essential cooperation can exist between players is if both players are in the same location at the same time. Also your quote (if that's what he actually said) doesn't really help because unless he gave specifics, which I'm gonna guess he didn't xD, means his statement on what constitutes essential cooperation is open to interoperation. That' s a fact. Not me spinning anything.

edit: can't watch the video right now.

I think you need to go back and listen carefully. He said traces of other people, meaning discoveries. Naming of animals, planets etc. All said in that short clip. He also said you cannot see other players right at the 4 min mark.

Even people in the YouTube comments can understand what Murray was saying. C'mon now
I'm not trying to be an asshole here, but are you being intentionally dense?
He's also said many times during interviews that people will be able to see one another. Like, literally. Not "meaning", he has literally said that.

He said on Stephen Colbert something along the lines of "The only way you will know what you look like is when someone else sees you"

Right, which doesnt actually mean that its possible for that to happen though.

yall made a good little forced narrative here and a fun little wich hunt. good luck

Knowing what we know now and rewatching these videos you get the feeling a lot of Mr Murray's quirkiness was actually him wrestling with digging himself deeper and deeper into a hole he knew he'd never climb out of.

That being said i'm honestly having fun with the game. Bought it because the hype bit me watching the leaks and i'm pleased with what it is but actual MP elements would have given the game crazy long legs and break up the monotony.

I wasnt aware of that. But they probably took that down because of the "optional" word? I mean, doesn't the game requires to be online so it can procedurally generate new planets and species?

The irony of a grammatical error while calling out other people's reading skills aside -- forced multiplayer? The fucking dev claimed it was possible. The "could" was based on the small likelihood that you'd actually be in the same place at the same time.

Right, which doesnt actually mean that its possible for that to happen though.

So when a developer says "You know what you look like when someone sees you" that does not indicate someone can see you?

Sources are all over this thread. He said the only way to know what your character looks like is to ask another player you encounter. He has also mentioned killing other players you run into. He has said if 100 players landed on a planet, they'd eventually be able to run into each other despite the giant planet sizes. He has said you can find and play with your friends.

Oh no grammatical errors from a non english person on his phone the horror. Imma bail outta this thread.

Once again have fun with your wich hunt

You act like he didn't say the opposite of your opposite multiple times.

I actually don't, I've said that he was ambiguous multiple times. When someone gives conflicting information over a feature, I can no longer get hyped over that feature, that's common sense. Many chose to ignore that and purchased it anyhow.

He just meant that you and your friends can play in the same room and pass the controller. :p
