I love everyone in this thread building the case for the OP. As you can see, memes are unfunny, boring, and worthless. See the post above mine for the clearest proof.

Are you shitting me? Memes used to be mundane and boring.

Memes today make me giggle at least, excluding "dat boi", that shit was forced.

hydrophilic attack just shot themself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about NeoGAF.com culture (I'm an expert), but wittiness and originality are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on reddit where you can become successful by spamming the same unfunny memes a million times. If you post unfunny memes on NeoGAF.com, people will put you on their ignore lists, and the only way to get out of there is repentance.

What this means is the NeoGAF.com public, after seeing this, is not going to want to read hydrophilic attack's posts, nor will they quote any of hydrophilic attack's posts. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but hydrophilic attack has alienated an entire forum with this move.

hydrophilic attack, publicly apologize and make a couple of funny backfire threads or you can kiss your Q/P ratio goodbye.

Been online and on forums since '99 or '00 and can confirm that gaming communities online have deteriorated in the past ~4 years due to memes. Memes all suck. Yes, no exceptions. If it's a meme it's shit and you would have been better off stating what you intended to state in plain English or whichever language you were communicating in.

Hampster Dance was around since 98 or so. Memes predate your user experience.

Back before youtube was ever a thing, there was a place that many of us would frequent to get caught up on the latest internet memes...

it's weird, I feel the opposite. most "memes" now aren't even memes, they're just... dumb
it felt like in the past they were memes for a reason. now anything can be a meme

they used to be funny, now they're mostly just obnoxious
unless I don't understand what a meme is anymore. I basically just see 'x person did this im going to copy them Lolololol' as opposed to an actual joke.
maybe i am the joke
where has my life gone

He didn't say there weren't memes before the last 4 years. He said "gaming communities online have deteriorated in the past ~4 years due to memes." Memes were not a large part of the forum experience in 98.

I was posting in 98. I don't know hamster dance. Probably because in 98, it took me 30 minutes to download a few pictures of Sable. Gifs were out of the question. Or videos. Whatever the hamster thing is.

Have you ever considered

And hear me out

You might be boring as fuck

OP is capable of having original thoughts and ideas. That's boring.

Someone posting a Pinnochio "Dead" picture - now he's the king of entertainment and comedy.

For every actually funny meme... there's several trash memes. The most annoying one so far is Harambe memes. Those REALLY gotta stop.

I would pay EviLore directly for access to an On Topic sub-forum where memes are bannable.

Why not just head over to SA and pay them for a membership? I don't post or read it much anymore, but I still stand by that $10 as some of the best money I've ever spent. I love their Ask/Tell forums.

I probably would. Heard it was hot shit back in the day. But if it's not anymore, I don't want to pay $10 for something subpar. Although I'm sure SA has their own memes, so it's probably a wash.

Except for General Bullshit, it's the same as it ever was. You might be able to read it. Check out Games if you want games, Debate & Discussion and C-Spam if you want politics (political affiliation is exactly the same as here), TV-IV if you want to talk about shows, Ask/Tell if you want to learn stuff. Stay away from General Bullshit for now. I like it but it's more of an acquired taste. It jokes about everything and takes nothing serious. It's not for everyone.

Only thing I dislike is it's all megathreads except for A/T. It's all like the community forums here.

Most of you would be immediately eaten alive at SA, so...

Yeah but the worst that could happen is you'd get probated for 6 hours unless you were really not even trying to fit in.

Meme's predate the Internet. It was a word coined by Richard Dawkins 1976 to just describe the transfer of non-genetic information.

I'm just saying it's not for everyone. Especially the gimmick forums. Games is a comparably safe place to post, yet you really need to subscribe to a style to make the most of it, and it's hard for someone new to read if an post (honest, troll, or otherwise) is just going to fall flat, or be an immediate death sentence. The smaller, focused interest forums are definitely welcoming, but walking into any of the main forums, thinking it's like GAF OT is just asking for a bad experience.

Haven't memes always existed? In 99 and 2000 it was all about All Your Base and that fucking dancing baby and those hamsters. In 2004/2005 it was O'rly and YTMND and Numa Numa. I mean, this has been around since the internet was a thing.

I like how gaf manages memes tbh. Not all memes suck. Yes, there are exceptions.

Memes are not some kind of recent phenomenon. OP's claimed halcyon days of the internet were plagued with All Your Base, Mr. T Ate My Balls, Hamsterdance, l33t speak, and all the other memes of its day. It's an inevitable result of mass media. In the TV era they were called "catchphrases."

They still weren't mainstream like they are now, you had to be online gaming or on a nerdy message board to come across memes. I think Rickrolling crossed memes into the mainstream.

Like everything else, same can be said of memes. A handful are really funny and clever, while the majority ends of as unfunny internet noise.

This thread is evident of that.
