Rise of the Tomb Raider will have 3 modes on PS4Pro

Ehhh..... Not getting a PS4P day one but I will get one further down the road. I'm playing Lara on my original PS4.

Why do I suddenly feel like a 2nd rate citizen owning an OG PS4?

It's a difficult one. No one is forcing anyone, yet as of November the PS4 will no longer be the best option to play Sony output.

Whatever claims they make, I can see this not exactly incentivising devs to fight tooth and nail to maximise OG ps4 performance when they can just push out PS4 Pro sizzlereels

People in this forum were saying making different graphical profiles for the PS4 Pro was going to be a bitch. PC games not only have preset profiles (sometimes) but the end user can mix and match individual settings to his preference, not to mention they have to work on a virtually infinite range of hardware configurations. So making a few preset graphic profiles for two closed systems should be relatively easier in comparison, right? (I know nothing about game development)

What happened to "code to the metal" and "console optimization"? xD

They can surely squeeze something more out of this even without that mumbo jumbo. We need an all AMD benchmark at 4k.

Even 70% of 4k with reconstruction can look amazingly good if done right.

Something like Ryse on X1. 900p but damn it looked good at launch.

You can squeeze the metal out of those CPUs maybe.

Why Sony didn't say this at the conference? If they would have talked about performance options and specs, things would have gone a lot smoother.

Regardless of what everyone says, someone's going to get fucked. Devs can barely get out 1 working version and now you've added another platform for them. We're all fucked when Scorpio comes out and adds another fucking spec to program for.

This is exactly what I was hoping for from the PS4 Pro, I definitely interested in buying one now. The only other thing that I'd really like from this is an improvement on the PS4's SATA II specs.

I really hope not many games do this. Part of the reason I left PC gaming was because I can't stop changing settings, even just when I move the camera. Decisions like this paralyze my ability to simply play a game.

This is me as well basically. Want options, PC is always the way to go. Console gaming is (was?) about the curated, fixed setting where you didn't have to worry about anything, it was optimized as much as the dev pushed it, you took it or you didn't.

Hah I was exactly the same. I would be more in the settings menu trying to find the perfect playable settings with maximum eyecandy then actually playing the damn game. I would drive myself nuts with changing the settings.

But having said that I'm fine with having these options with the PRO. If they would just have 1 option which would be the higher resolution version it would be useless for all the 1080p owners.

With all the additional work Crystal Dynamics are putting into the game will it change the minds of those that were going to boycott it or buy it used when it releases on Playstation?

I personally think we need to support devs who implement these kind of options.

- 4K mode, the big resolution and developers made the optimal choices

- 1080p high framerate, the game running at >45 FPS targeting 60

- 1080p bells and whistles, 30 FPS locked with every processing technique pushed to the max

That sounds good to me.

Edit :

The source was the Crystal Dynamic guy on the Sony live. I'm sure you guys can find it.

Edit 2 :

60 FPs target with dips, and over 45, so I assume 45 minimum, mentioned optimal for speedrunning though, where dips are death, so heh.

If all games have this I'd 100% buy a pro

Fixed the OP to be more accurate regarding the 60 FPS.

I'd expect performances similar to Tomb Raider DE for ps4. A mostly 60 FPS with dips to 45 ish on action heavy scenes.

He did say optimal for speedrunning. But framerate drops are worse than a stable 30fps for speedrunning, unless it's a game that ties speed and framerate (and it's not the case here).

edit : I'm tired.

On paper this sounds great.

In reality though, it will be interesting to see how optimised each of the modes are.

I own a console because I want games to be optimised for a closed and controlled format. I built a PC a few years back, a pretty good one at the time, but I was constantly frustrated by having to play around with options before I could play a damn game.

What about regular ps4 players? Piss on us right?
PS4 version will already run without the Xbox One's input lag, and come with extra modes.

Is that fair?

I hear ya on your worries about the pro. I agree with them. But by all accounts the core game here is solid, in terms of quality, performance and content. The Pro can take that quality baseline and throw more oomph at it and nobody loses.

PS4 Pro versions of games being the only ones actually locked at 30fps/60fps would be the problem, but that doesn't look to be the case here.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
I'm into this philosophy. 60fps is not important to me, so let me choose.

I'm pretty sure it's Nixxes doing all the extra leg work.

Why Sony didn't say this at the conference? If they would have talked about performance options and specs, things would have gone a lot smoother.

Because it would have been extremely misleading. This is a big GPU upgrade, the point of this machine is to improve graphics. If they wanted to improve framerates or game design they would have upgraded the CPU , Ram, and cut ties with the PS4. thats not what this is. Its purely for graphics.

So is it Native 4K?

No, they are using other techniques to utilize the 4k displays. native 4k requires way too much power.

Oh that's reassuring.

- 4k/Pro mode, what devs worked on
- Old mode, unlocked fps or ultra shadows. Pick one, we don't care, buy a Pro

Wouldn't it be better overall to choose one of the 1080p settings, and let the TV upscale the image from 1080p to 4K?
What benefits does 4K upscaling from the console itself have?

I am into picking different tradeoffs (1080p 30 fps with bells and whistles for me). I hope this becomes a regular thing for the PS4pro.

For Battlefield, for example, I hope it will be 1080p instead of 900p.

Then what's there to be confused about? Am I missing something?

If they mean native 4K that would be great.

My suspicion based on what's in the PS4pro and what kind of PC hardware you need to push native 4K though is that we're talking some weird upscaling business blatently labeled as "4K".

Love to be proven wrong though.

So I guess that the 4k upscaling tech patch is mandatory for every "Forward Compatibility" title and every other setting it's a plus from the developer...

Thanks to Crystal Dynamics for trying on giving people what they wanted with this upgrade, hoping that the other developers followed their example.
Bless us with your tech wizardy, Naughty dog
