Rise of the Tomb Raider will have 3 modes on PS4Pro

We will see if this type of feature can be a real value add for this game. I know it has my interest piqued. Just curious.

I find it rather weird. Seeing the PC benchmarks, I wonder at what framerate it really is going to perform. A 980ti can play it at 4K/31fps, so the graphics are going to be turned down or the framerate will be very unstable.

I question whether it will be native 4k.

"Options" can paralyse me from even bothering with a game. Knowing you can only have one of three options and you have to prioritise it is the sort of multiple choice I can't be arsed with in CONSOLE gaming. I just want the as intended experience and away we go.

shoudln't be hard to default to a choice on the PS4 Pro depending on the res of your tv, 4k for 4k, and the 1080p@30 all bells and whistles mode if you have 1080p. If you're in the minority that wants 60fps boom or bust (on a console even), then you can change to that choice. Happy Happy for all involved.

Come on, this isn't rocket science. If you have a 4K TV, chose 4K mode. If you want prettiest graphics, choose 30FPS mode. If you want a higher frame rate, chose 60FPS capped mode. It's not that hard, and I bet it will suggest a mode when you first turn on the game.

So they're actually pushing for native 4K at 30fps with the same graphical settings of the basic PS4 mode with one of the Pro modes?
That's really impressive.

ROTR will look the balls in 4K. Amazing stuff. PS really does get the definitive edition, I'm a bit jealous!

Who on earth wants a frame rate flapping around between 45-60fps on a 60hz screen?? Gross.

As long as the game hold onto 60fps for most of the time and the dips are infrequent and mostly in the 50-60fps area, I really don't mind. Last of Us Remastered had very similar performance and I along with the vast majority here on GAF got along fine with that game - if the OT for the game is worth anything.

Really liking the fact most future games should have great IQ on the Pro on a normal 1080p TV, and of course even the faux 4K, or should that be "Faux K", modes will look great on a respective 4K TV. Seriously the end of shimmering is nigh. I don't see the point in complex graphics that's supposed to look great, when the edges of everything on screen is a shimmering jaggy mess. The Pro finally gives console players some damn good image quality for once.

I hope options like these are widespread, nothing wrong with options! It's still far more controlled than in a random PC setup and devs taking care with it should be able to find the best balance for each mode to deliver in its own way.

Now, Rocket League locked 60 with better IQ... where you at? (Bloodborne too of course but I fear that's a lost cause if they still haven't fixed the frame pacing issues that other games have had but which were fixed within a patch or two after launch...).

So basically , if you chose to play ROTR on a standard PS4 you're stuck with roughly what the xbox one version could do - that is approximately medium detail PC equivalent settings at 1080p with a 30 fps target that is achieved pretty consistently.

Then, move up to a pro and you can have similar detail settings but the game run at that interpolated 2160p that looks almost as good in stills but perhaps loses a bit when in motion.

Still stuck on a 1080p set ? well now it's locked to 30 fps with equivalent settings to PC Ultra. Want more frames ? settings lowered to High , framerate left unlocked. Having played quite a bit of the PC version there are 2 areas in particular that are VERY hard and demanding to get running at a locked 60 fps , so most of the game will run at 60 or close but those sections ? yeah... expect 40's.

I mean this pretty much all checks out. The Jaguar is just a terrible CPU and no amount of overclocking it will fix that. Hopefully in 3 years when we get a PS5 it uses something MUCH faster.

OP - I have no idea what you are doing.

First you erroneously state there is a locked 60fps mode. Now you have changed it to ">45fps targeting 60fps" which again, was never said.

All they have said is >45fps. Chances are there will be scenarios where the game goes above 60fps (which won't make a difference on a 60hz display) - such is the nature of an unlocked framerate.

Yup. Consoles should have had these options forever.

the only reason this is possible with NEO is because of its iterative nature. Consoles would never have had these options before regardless because of the fixed hardware aspect

- 4K mode, the big resolution and developers made the optimal choices

- 1080p high framerate, the game running at >45 FPS targeting 60

- 1080p bells and whistles, 30 FPS locked with every processing technique pushed to the max

I hope the bolded isn't the faith of PS4 owners. Give this bullshit to PS4 pro users!

It's not the Jaguars which is the problem. The GPU just isn't powerful enough.

Both are a problem. The Jaguars are slower than equivalent-clocked ARM cores, which is highly absurd in a home console. The GPU however was already barely adequate for 1080p and now they are going to tell it to render 4 times more pixels which is what 4K is with only twice the overall GPU power. Yeah, no. That's not happening.

This should have been said during the conference as an example of what devs can do with different resolutions. What a bad show.

Older consoles could've had it, they just virtually never do. Can always have multiple settings on consoles e.g. like TLOU had 2 modes for different FPS, and one has higher resolution shadows for example on PS4.

Even going back to PS1 era there were games like G-Police where you could modify draw distance to have a better or worse framerate I think.

It's very uncommon, but nothing prevents it really from happening even on single iteration generations. Most people just wouldn't even care either anyway.

Official 4K PS4 Pro trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOg9eiQsEBM

“Sony officially unveiled their new gaming console today – the PlayStation 4 Pro – available November 10, 2016. Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration was featured at their New York event, showcased as one of the first 4K games on console. Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration launches on October 11, 2016, and will be compatible with the PlayStation 4 Pro.

With the PlayStation 4 Pro’s additional horsepower, we’ve been able to add graphical enhancements such as improved reflections, more dynamic foliage, and detailed tessellation. These features heighten the experience and further immerse players in Lara’s first Tomb Raiding expedition.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration on the PlayStation 4 Pro will include three modes: 4K Resolution, High Framerate, and Enriched Visuals, allowing you to customize your experience. 4K Resolution displays the game in 4K Resolution, on supported 4K TVs, in 30 fps. High Framerate pushes the framerate above 30 fps at 1080p with a target of 60 fps for an even smoother gameplay experience. Enriched Visuals enhances graphical features of the game for a lusher and more realistic experience, in 1080p at 30 fps.”

If you feel the trailer deserves its own thread...I can do it :D

I hope all devs release trailers detailing the differences between modes and versions of the games they are bringing out.

Do you remember that TLOU was a remaster of a game on PS3? The overhead of processing power on PS4 gave them the ability to do that.

On PS3, it would not have been possible because they were squeezing all the power out of the unit at 30fps.

I hope Bloodborne is one of the first party games that Sony decides to give Pro treatment to. I don't care about 4k, but 1080p 60fps sound fucking awesome!

I'm not planning on upgrading to a 4KTV anytime in the next 10 years so reading about these high framerate/high fidelity modes for 1080 TV's is very encouraging. I just might pick up a Pro after all.

Barely adequate for 1080p? Like 95% of PS4 games run at 1080p.

I think both Sony and MS wanted to get on x86.

This is sounding better and better for the 1080peasants (including me.) My interest in the Playstation 4 Pro, not unlike the titular heroine, is Rising.

This is how every game needs to manage it now.

Yeah I hope so. A 60fps option for all
Games would be great

Yes at 60fps but at 30fps games on the ps4 look fine at 1080p.

But lol@ north of 45.

Just lock it at 60 damn it. Put some settings down. You already have the 30fps being the bell and whistles mode. It's basically a "Graphics mode" or "Gameplay mode".

No thx. Locked resolution/unlocked 60 is the best tradeoff.

Games are only noticeably choppy once they go under 24 fps; they don't go anywhere near that low when they target 60.

I play the game on my 970, the shimmering alone destroy any advantage it has over the what ever trick they use to recreate the game in 4k on PS4pro, very clean.

What do I want with a choppy unlocked 45FPS? Surely this thing has the power to lock the game at 60 with whatever settings the normal PS4 version will use. That's pretty much all I wanted from the Neo in the first place; something that would play PS4 exclusives at 60.
