Sony doesn't allow Fallout 4/Skyrim mods on PS4

Explain? I already put Bethesda to blame for the embarrassment Fallout 4 is, and the fact they make me feel I have to rely on mods to have fun playing their games. Don't feel like reading through 900+ replies to find the answer.

But I don't want barebones support, I want what XB1 has, what was promised to everyone who bought Fallout 4. Tired of this anti-consumer bull coming out of Sony lately.

Perhaps Bethesda shouldn't have advertised mod support then, if the knew there were limitations (they knew). If they would have been honest, you could have made your purchasing decision on correct information. Giving out false information, that's the pinnacle of anti-consumer. Bethesda saying "if we can't get it fully working, you can't have it at all" is just as anti-consumer.

Not white knighting Sony here, but this situations isn't entirely to blame on Sony.

all i want to say is thanks sony for not allowing fallout 4 or skrim mods on your joke of a system and i shure as hell better get my refund for my pree order of skrim for fals advertising

You forgot them slapping PS4 owners who bought PS1 classics in the face. A person can basically play a classic every where but the PS4.

Lol they are only letting me play games on the platform i bought them for. What a slap in the face. Some you man, I swear...

So is this Sony's fault or Bethesda's?

Id like to know who to direct my anger towards

If Bethesda is trying to pass the blame, surely Sony will put out their own PR to combat that?

They already had PS4 mods working in beta and the issues they had (file space, audio problems, some performance issues because Sony wouldn't let users compile in PS4 texture format and made them used the PC format which is really bad on PS4) were on Sony's end and Sony assured them prior to the announcement that they would make it work.

Like all of this was openly talked about on the private developer forums by Bethesda staff. It's only a secret insofar as you needed to be in the Playstation CK beta to get access. All Sony needed to do was give permission for Bethesda to add a function to the kit to compile in proper PS4 format and it would be solved.

This post should be added to the OP.

Will Sony offer refunds for Skyrim PSN pre-orders now?

Pretty hilarious, but also kind of sad. Bethesda's ulterior motive with Skyrim remastered was without a doubt Skyrim mods on both consoles. From a marketing standpoint this will cripple their campaign.

I don't see anything about Bethesda in there

Bethesda say it was Sonys decision, therefore fuck Sony.

If you're intimating I should also be upset with Bethesda for bringing no mods to PS4, I want what's available on XB1. Not just some. Sony is the stumbling block in that.

That PS3 security breach spook them good.
Sony is all better save than sorry mode now.

Could have been worse, I expected them to not allow changing your own harddrive, USB ports, and other things. Kaz will not be bowing again, though he might when PS+ gets taken down for 3 months or something that they can't stop in that type of net attack situation.

@PlayStation what happened to you guys you use to be for the players now it's all about money why you guys have more than enough money

It has always been about money. Sometimes things align and it may seem like a corporation cares about you, but ultimately, they just want your cash.

So if I understand this correctly the main problem here is that in order for mods to work properly on PS4 the Creation Kit has to be able to convert sound and texture files to proprietary formats. Since Bethesda is a PS4 dev they must have the ability to do this themselves but Sony won't allow them to add it to the CK because they don't want anyone other than devs to have access to these formats.

If true, that seems like a shitty move on Sonys part.

The EA Access quote always makes me chuckle. It's certainly better value than their PS+ service.
I don't think security is the major factor for blocking mods however.

That EA Access quote was even more hilarious because around they same time they launched PS Now with its original AWFUL pricing. :3

Sony PR's had a tough couple of weeks.

- Two straight months of weak sales against an (also weak) competitor who now seems out for blood
- The biggest 1st party release of the year (and only PSVR killer app) delayed to 2017
- PS+ price increase with no new features to justify it
- PS4 Pro unveiled to tepid reception (and lacking expected features like UHD physical playback and performance enhancements in multiplayer)
- No mods support for one of the year's upcoming biggest titles

It doesn't matter who's to blame. The optics make all the difference, and the customer decides with their wallet...

Most customers won't give 2 shits about any of this.
If people still bought Xbox one's on day 1 then Sony will be fine.
Sony have nailed it most of this gen, a few issues will come and we will move on and forget. They should be fine.

It is since even the fucking Vita can play those games. It is just greedy Sony I am sure they will force PS4 owner to repurchase those games at a premium. Keep on making excuses I am not asking for PS3 games but god damn PS1 games that can be played every where but the PS4.

I put more time into Skyrim than any other game last console gen, and was really looking forward to revisiting it with mods. While I'm interested in a visual update, mods very much were the primary selling point to me, since I only played this on consoles.

Bummer. Definitely not a $60 product with that feature yanked. It was arguable before, but certainly not now.

They might, but there's not much they can say because they are the reason that mods aren't coming to the PS4.

Probably a mixture of both. Bethesda came out and announced it before they knew they could make it work, and Sony seems like they either couldn't or wouldn't budge on their key issues that Bethesda was running into with the PlayStation architecture.

I think it looks worse for Bethesda right now though since they're tossing shit at one of their biggest business partners whereas they could've come out and say they were unable to add it due to technical issues and leave it at that.

Dang, this sony stuff is getting real annoying. Feel like Microsoft has been doing a much better job treating the consumer than Sony for the past couple years. Probably going to sell off my PS4 and snag a Scorpio when it drops.

No I'm not. It sucks this isn't happening but some posters need to step out of their emotional and opinionated bubble with no basis.

It's the same when people shit on MS and their policy regarding FF14. It sucks but outside of GAF or forum chatter no one truly cares.

Reality check right here. As much as it sucks for a good number of people here on the forum, I don't see this causing big issues amongst most ps4 owners at large. That being said, it sucks they are skipping out on any sort of feature the competition supports.

How accurate is this information?

Where did Sony assure Bethesda, and when did Sony fail to follow through?

And so Sony platforms continue to have the vastly inferior versions of Skyrim.

Maybe they can do a special anniversary release of it on PS4 Pro where it comes with fun retro graphics , a six axis and the game grinds to a halt after 40 hours of play?

What if Sony agreed initially and later decided against mods? Contrary to what you said, other people have said mod support was functional in beta versions of the game.

Oh give me a break.

Ha ha. All these years of people complaining that you can't mod games like on PC. So now we can on a couple, but now since this game won't on Playstation, it's like... "Meh, who cares about mods. Nobody wants them."

Ha ha.

Apology accepted.

Skyrim sold over 20 million copies, by the way. On non-Nintendo hardware last gen, it was just behind GTA V and Minecraft.

Those two games still dominate the charts to this day, so why would Skyrim be any different? One of the most requested remasters this gen.

I didn't really see too many people on Neogaf requesting a remaster as such. But that's purely anecdotal.
I loved the game by the way, I loved it enough to get the platinum trophy on the relatively horrible PS3 version, plus I finished all the DLC too. I think I have over 260 hours on my save file.

I was just thinking how cool it would be to use mods in Fallout 4 with the PS4 Pro helping keep performance more stable. Agh... I hate this news. Hate hate hate it.

I'm confused. I own a PS4 and a Vita. I do not own an XBOX.

What bias? And who are these "most people who frequent here" anyway?

You seem perturbed.

And Skyrim is absolutely one of the biggest games of the year. It'll be a GTA-style evergreen juggernaut for months to come.

AYYY

Imagine if Steam locked all of your purchases to one computer.

Imagine if you bought a game on Steam knowing it was locked to one computer, and then later getting upset because it was locked to one computer. Sure it'd be nice if they could get ps one games working on ps4, but it's not something they promised when you bought those games. Calling that a "slap in the face" or comparing it to some kind of PR misstep is the kind of worthless hyperbole that makes these threads a chore to get through.

Yeah I can't say that Skyrim will be a full price purchase for me anymore. I'll wait for a discount, or until Sony decides they done goofed and lets mod support back in.

You'd think think that there shouldn't be much to this considering how they now consider the PC to be their main competitor.

The crazy thing in my opinion is that people even think that such a long running company and publisher would not even had a agreement and legal talks way before release. No way would they announce such a massive, risky, uncertain feature if there weren't months and thousands of dollars worth of legal talks and agreements. That said, it would always have an exit clause for Sony, which they have now used. Given the complexity of the matter, we simply can't know the full decisions behind the scenes nor is "blame" a reasonable word when both sides would ultimately have had long discussions and concerns. Even if the feature was agreed upon, announced and "promised" it always would have uncertain road ahead, much more so than nearly anything else in game development.

You're not gonna like it but I can't give you links because as it turned out they just deleted the PS4 mod section from http://bethesda.net

Lol

But I'm sure anyone else who was in the CK beta/part of the private forums would be able to corroborate that info plus it goes with what Bethesda is saying anyway and Sony has yet to dispel it.

Here's a top post from a verified mod author over at Reddit that basically supports all of that info.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/51xk00/ps4_mod_update/d7fpcsq?context=3

By the way, as a mod author who has been keeping up with this and was invited to CK before release/etc. etc. let me shed some light on this situation:

I hate to say it, but these issues are 100% on Sony. The three primary problems with mods on PS4 were the following:

Limited space. 900MB total for all mods installed. It's less than half of what's on Xbox and last I heard they still plan to make Xbox's mod storage limit bigger in the future.

Audio. PS4 uses a proprietary format that the release version of the CK can't compile. Bethesda needed Sony to hook them up with tools to work with that format, permission to release what they used, or permission to make it so the CK could save audio in that format.

Texture format. Again, PS4 uses a proprietary format for textures. Sony restricted texture distribution to the PC format. PS4/Fallout 4 on PS4 is not optimized to use the standard PC format, so it ate too much memory and diminished performance. Once again, Bethesda needed Sony to either hook them up with tools or agree to let them release what they used to save their textures in the PS4 format to the public.

The beta was cancelled/mods delayed because Bethesda was at a roadblock with Sony refusing to help. The way the post makes it sound is that Sony was ultimately not willing to play ball on this, therefore severely restricting mods and Bethesda didn't want to release mods like that. Would partial support be better than no support? I'd say probably, but that last bit is speculation on my part.

At any rate it's been no secret in the mod author community for months that Sony has been yanking them around about this. Sony assured them it was possible before they announced it, they announced it, then Sony wouldn't make it work. It's very unfortunate for everybody involved but no one more so than PS4 players who are being robbed of something great.
