Microsoft announces Windows 10 VR Headsets by HP/Dell/Lenovo/etc., starting at $299

This seems more headed to the productivity market backed by MS instead of Xbox. I don't know about its gaming capabilities but it could be a low cost PC competitor for Oculus and Vive. I supose that, being a W10 device, it could be adapted to Scorpio, in which case, would be a nice addition considering xbox won't carry the risk on the success of this product.

I supose that, if MS is willing to make of this a VR gaming solution, it could be a more elaborated version, wich hopefully will be Scorpio compatible and we won't have to deal with Oculus.

I can still remember when MS were shitting on VR and talking up AR, now it looks like they're trying to jump the bandwagon as it's pulling out of the station.

Interesting to note no Xbox compatability though.

Looks like the front of a golf cart.

If past history indicates anything, it's VERY likely they're going to release a VR headset in the future OR most likely partner with Oculus (like speculation indicated earlier in the year) when the scorpio comes out.

See here to get an impression about how far long Inside-out positional tracking is. It's very much at an acceptable, with little to no regressions from outside-in tracking, level, just hasn't been rolled into a consumer product yet.

I don't see any evidence to believe that these won't be game-worth headsets that exist on the same spectrum as GearVR -> PSVR -> Oculus/Vive.

Thanks for the video link. Inside out tracking sounds like the next gen for VR but a lot of posters here are talking like it's bottom basement tech. I don't get it. As a PSVR owner I'm sick of positional drift. If I can play twinstick VR with no drift then sign me up.

I'm simply saying that people noticing the similarity in design are being met with "cringe" and other responses that are unwarranted hate. Get out of here with that.
The problem is when people sound salty when good ideas are copied.

Salt:
"Is that PSVR knock off?"
"Haha that's a PSVR head mount design. Ooh man"
"They're not even trying to hide it."
"That PSVR knock off."

No salt:
"Happy to see others using the PSVR style over the straps. Most notable part of the headset."
"Headstrap setup looks similar to PSVR, but I think that's great. Everyone should be ripping that off because it's by far the most comfortable."

For what it's worth, the forehead band is not a new idea. Sony started it in the 90's.

People laughing at cheap copies / knockoffs is not salt . this happens ,( this needs to be pretty much reminded in every gaming thread ever), with all electronics..... my friend had a "Shrap" calculator in high school which was a hilarious conclusion to him bragging about his awesome calculator for a month straight (proof that people will be brand loyal to anything lol).
The hyperbole of proclaiming "salt" in every gaming thread is as defensive as those proclaiming others jealousy. It's the equivalent of the preemptive "nintendoomed" to any and all negative press regarding Nintendo.

anyway i'll reserve judgement until I see more, I actually thought MS was doing AR not VR.

Receipts?

Because as far as I know MS never shit on VR, and talked up AR for the simple reason of being the minds behind Hololens.

Im sorry but the whole presentation to me was just them showing thing after thing that looks cool in a demo but wont work nearly as well or smooth in real use.

Nothing new, like the old 360 kinect demo and we all know how it ended.

Ok, reading through this thread, does everyone not realise these are 3rd party headsets?

These aren't Microsoft's.

I mean, it's in the thread title.

Well yeah it's Microsoft - when they announced first party titles for PC they forgot to mention they will be windows store only UWP apps ;)

It comes across as deliberately muddying the water, putting out the price before the product.

sounds like familiar tactics:
a. affordable VR... but not much info. (PSVR)
b. Scorpio is going to be awesome... but no info. (PS4 Pro)
c. Player tournaments like just announced on PS4, but not much info. (PS4)

d. Surface Book - vague hardware info. What i7 exactly? How much battery exactly?

Knockoffs are funny because their attempts at deception don't make the product any better.

I remember seeing those sony glasses headset in a old gaming magazine, but it was blue instead of black.

It seems like a Microsoft project in which the names following are involved, but it still looks like a PSVR which is the only thing I was shocked about. There's not much else to talk about as they didn't give any specs, games, but it seems like this won't even be made for games, and locked to windows 10 store. Also, personally I don't care that it's like PSVR.

Upon closer inspection, the belt thing looks like it may need some padding. I never used a PSVR but that thing looks very comfortable in the pictures above. This belt design of the (looks up) HP/Dell/Lenovo/etc. headset look like it would cut off circulation. It's probably a prototype still. Maybe the patent sony has is on the release and lock system that allows them to easily have pads on it like that.

I took the design to be illustrative only, I doubt any real product will look like that next year.

Microsoft made a "shell" for VR/AR/MR called Holoshell which is apart of Windows 10.
They showed off this shell through HoloLens and through one of these 3rd party headsets.
Microsoft built a platform for anyone who has a HMD can connect it to a Windows 10 pc and can navigate through Windows and perform tasks just as if you were connecting a USB printer.

Everything related to gaming, specs, etc...is not the focus. They did want to point out price and show partners so they can help the ecosystem on Windows 10. I see no reason why HTC Vive and SteamVR can't coexist. Put on the Vive, navigate to SteamVR launcher, and boom, ur at that application and do all of the things that you would expect. The same with Oculus. No reason you can't build a platform on top of Windows Holographic. This is just to help VR/AR/MR.

I'm sure there will be more headsets, and some of them will focus on gaming. No different then buying a gaming keyboard vs. a regular one. What MS is doing is nothing like PSVR. Yes, this is how MS is going to expect to do VR on Scorpio. But what MS is doing isn't in competition of PSVR directly. Shit, Sony could have Windows Holographic integration, aka run the Holoshell and still run PSVR games if they put it on Windows (through their own app).

And the Oculus and Vive look very similar to ski googles. There's only so many ways to attach a HMD to your head. Expect all designs to leverage the forehead going forward.

Yeah, the chance that Occulus and Vive don't adopt the PSVR style headset with their next versions is approximately zero.
