Eurogamer - Switch screen is 6.2", 720p, Capacitive Multi-Touch, IR sensor

Not at all unreasonable to expect something beyond 720p for a console which will be played at home on a TV by many.
No, not really.

I love how people don't mind the XBO/PS4 doing sub 1080p with the size they are. We get a 6.2" portable and suddenly people say 720p on that size is bad.

Give me a break, starting with battery life, Jesus.

Im going to miss the 2nd screen feature on the Wii U when the gamepad was docked (ie map or additional info in MK8) since the screen is obscured on the Switch

It's Nintendo. Why wouldn't they fuck this up somehow? I'm still expecting >$300 for this thing, which is fucking hilarious for a 720p device in goddamn 2017.

Highly doubt they expect to ship 2 million of these things in March if they plan to sell it for $300.

I love the look of the Switch as a handheld.

Finally a Nintendo portable with a high resolution screen. It's gonna feel like we skipped 2 generations compared to the 3DS.

720p device releasing in 2017? You're kidding me, right?

Even if that is serviceable, people know what resolutions are these days and that won't be seen as a good thing in the eyes of the masses.

Being so resolution sensible, I'm sure you have already noticed the sub-par resolution at what most of the games and app on your phone/tablet run, right?

Multi touch is unfortunate but it's probably just for apps and crappy mobile games now so I guess it doesn't matter that much. So I have to believe the joycons can be used without the grip when the machine is docked right? I can't believe they would except you to flip the whole controller upside down.

720p is OK for a screen of that size but is there any chance that it'll render at 1080p when connected to a television? I'm not talking about upscaling.

I guess the best we can hope for at this point is for Nintendo to use Nvidia's DirectStylus tech, which might be a good-enough replacement for drawing applications.

resistive touchscreens
less precise
???

I kinda figured it was going to happen eventually, but I'm sad to see it go. Resistive touchscreen + stylus was great for Art Academy, Picross, Canvas Curse, Pikmin, Etrian Odyssey, Pictochat, etc. etc.
One of my favorite things about the DS/3DS family tbh.

You probably saw that crazy Microsoft desktop all-in-one shown yesterday, the Surface Studio?

Switch has a higher pixel density than it.

If they force people to use the IR pointer as a replacement for touch that would be horrible. We still haven't heard if games are going to upres to 1080p on a TV, right? If they don't, I really do not see a reason to get this.

I'm sure it will. The Wii U does.

720p on a 6.2" screen sounds good to me. You might be able to see pixels, but I really don't see the point and I'll happily take the performance/price trade-off. Nintendo hasn't swung for the fences in terms of beast technology in over a decade. Anyone expecting X1 or PS4 level performance was kidding themselves.

That screen size being identical kind of screams that the Switch was originally a revision for the Wii U gamepad before they made the transition to it being the next console.

There's no reason it would be limited to 720p on the TV. It's likely going to depend on the game, and if there are any differences in performance between the docked and undocked modes of the switch.

In the earlier NX speculation threads (man, remember those days, when some of us portable enthusiasts couldn't quite dare dream of a hybrid) most people believed it to be 540p. 720 is great, super crisp high powered portable gaming - finally.

Not sure if people complaining or talking about '720 in 2017' are trolling. This will be a sharper display than most of you are gaming on on your expensive PCs, nevermind handhelds. As always smart phones are a completely irrelevant comparison.

I would be amazed if it didn't do this. I don't know why everyone here thinks a 720p screen means that's the resolution it'll render at when docked.

I will be incredibly surprised if the touchscreen is used for anything but "mobile" style games. I'll eat my hat if they add touch support to their AAA first party games.

My hope for this is that we'll see the Switch have more tablet-style functionality. Let me play Nintendo's mobile games on the go. Find a partnership that will let us use the Switch to replace some of the functionality (music, movies, books, web browsing) that an iPad would have. I think that's the only way it'll really grab the audience they're looking for.

The pessimist in me can't see anyone outside of hardcore Nintendo fans buying an under-powered tablet that can only play games.

..am I reading this correctly that people think that the games will output at 720p on TVs when the text says that 720p is the screen resolution of the portable screen

A lot of people seem to think game resolution is a hardware spec rather than a development choice.

This is a very good screen they have. It's nearly a "retina display." Maybe giving it a silly name like that would make some people happier?

The Wii U was initially going to be a portable console, but they had to back away from the idea because of performance and battery life problems.

Definitely higher than Wii U but it's closer to Xbone and not above it.

The best thing happening for Nintendo is something they played no part in - the Xbox One and PS4 being baselines for the next few years despite more powerful hardware being released. If the PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio were the baselines instead, the Switch would be so far behind, third parties would have already abandoned the thing (unless it takes off like the Wii).

Man, but the font is so crips while browsing twitter feeds on my 1440p phone!

750 x 1334 and 326 ppi

What is Apple thinking!? My 2 year old phone is 518 ppi!

Don't worry, I'm sure the dock will output 1080p, just like the Wii U does. And is not like you are worried about scaling artifacts since you want 1080p on a handheld anyway.

Oh, all's good then.

No, not really.

I was referring to console mode, not when used as a portable.

I wonder if an infrared sensor in the base could be used for tracking purposes for something like VR or would it not be accurate enough?

OMG! we're in 2017 why does not this thing have 4K display seriously!! and 10 hour battery life! and more powerful than PS4 dammit it was released 3 years ago come on!
btw, i won't pay more 250$.

The masses really don't care that much about resolution. DVDs still massively outsell Blu-Rays. The most popular console in the US the last couple of months is the one which plays the most popular third party games at lower resolutions than its competitor (including the most popular game of the moment, BF1, at 720p). The most popular hardware in Japan for the past few years runs games at 240p, and the most popular smartphone is just over 720p itself.

This.
Man those posts...

Edit:
Or on the handheld
We're not talking about the Vita here. Nintendo wants to avoid this kind of stuff.

FINALLY, a person who actually knows the benefits of resistive screens! I won't miss them on Nintendo products, but they get way, way more flack than they deserve. I'm still struggling with capacitive screens on phones when I need to select something small or use the phone when it's raining or snowing.

I did use PDAs for god know how many years, though, so I'm a bit biased.
