Eurogamer - Switch screen is 6.2", 720p, Capacitive Multi-Touch, IR sensor

At least a confirmation of an IR sensor more or less confirms that Splatoon will be perfectly playable on the system.

Switch looks really compact compared to the Wii U Gamepad

It's Nintendo. Why wouldn't they fuck this up somehow? I'm still expecting >$300 for this thing, which is fucking hilarious for a 720p device in goddamn 2017.

screens are cheap generally a 1080p screen won't be much more than the one they do have but thats not the only reason they chose 720.

games running natively is much more important.

I always find "this is 20xx!" posts funny, anything more than 720p isn't realistic unless you want a far too expensive device with little to no battery power.

FINALLY, a person who actually knows the benefits of resistive screens! I won't miss them on Nintendo products, but they get way, way more flack than they deserve. I'm still struggling with capacitive screens on phones when I need to select something small or use the phone when it's raining or snowing.

I did use PDAs for god know how many years, though, so I'm a bit biased.

i will miss them too. but i guess people just want the worse touchscreen for gaming, just because it's "newer".

Touch will not be something of a requirement. At least that's the rumors are alluding to.

Besides, this opens up possibilities of bringing games that may need touchscreen controls (mostly the ones that are handheld-only before). We''ll still have to see how well that will translate to docked mode with IR though.

Laura Dale has said that all games are required to be playable in dock mode, FWIW. So a lot of mobile games and touchscreen-centric game designs just won't work on Switch; even setting aside the impossibility of replicating multitouch on such a setup, an IR-controlled cursor will never be as fast or precise as tapping/swiping specific areas of the screen directly with one's finger.

Of course, there are lots of touchscreen games that don't demand that degree of speed or relative precision, but it's hard to see how something like Severed could work without significantly slowing down the combat.

I've seen a bit of chatter than an ir pointer can replicate the functionality of a touchscreen.

Have these people used a Wii?

They are entirely different input methods that require specific UIs designed for them.

Obviously for a lot of uses of a touchscreen you can design a similar method for an ir pointer, but it's not a case of an ir pointer exactly replicating a touchscreen.

Sure hope that dock does something for the res. I'm not planning on playing it on the go much, I don't want Switch games to be limited to 720p on my TV...

All rumors point to 1080p games on the TV, but it might just be the screen being a lower-res rather than the dock providing any sort of extra power.

I'm really confused at the thought of an IR pointer substituting touch controls when docked. Touch is far far more accurate. I'll probably just play undocked for touch heavy games.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
Pixel Per Inch (ppi) comparisons

WiiU - 854x480 @ 6.2 inch = 158 ppi
Vita - 960x544 @ 5 inch = 220 ppi
Switch - 1280x720 @ 6.2 inch = 236 ppi
Original 3DS: 132.15 ppi

n3DS (small): 120.23 ppi

3DS XL and n3DS XL: 95.59 ppi

This is what I mostly wanted honestly. A better or just as good screen as the PS Vita. The 3DS's screen was poor and I'm so glad to drop it.

The iPhone has a 4.7" display.

The pixels will be quite obvious on this thing. Won't touch a resolution that low with a pole tbh. Hope it doesn't limit the resolution on TVs to 720p...
Let me know when you're playing games on the iPhone that are console quality graphics and renders higher than 720p

I think people just want to smudge their thumbs on it and expect it to work like their phone. A bit stupid, but not entirely unreasonable, especially considering that (comparatively) few people really used touch screen devices daily before the iPhone.

Why are people complaining about a 236ppi screen? That's not bad at all for games.

Because "lol seven twenty pee."

all those 'why only 720p' replies literally made me sick.

as someone having worked their ass off to optimize a vita game only to still have it in subnative, my pain at seeing my work half ruined by subnative is palpable still to this day. I dont ever want to see something like that on the switch.

besides I dont see many complain about vita resolution when a game is native res, and the switch is even in higher DPI than that.

Why would Nintendo waste time and money giving it a 1080p screen when most of the games won't be in 1080p?

The Xbox One struggles to get 1080p visuals in a box way bigger than Switch.

720p for gaming on a 6" screen will look great.

720p is suddenly a bad thing when console gamers were just gushing over 720p games 3-4 years ago.

Aren't we still getting 720p on Xbox One?

People shouldn't be expecting to use touch/IR pointing in most games. The IR pointer is going to be really impractical for anything except simplistic point-and-click. Things like Splatoon will likely just use gyro aiming.

Keeps sounding great. Looking forward to hearing more about the games and non game app support.

Edit - im guessing touch is more for apps and Internet browsing than games

236ppi screen.

Jesus, might as well just play on a TI-83; those pixels will be as big as dinner plates

"Only" 720p. This thing is both a handheld and a console. Anyone else remember what Nintendo's LAST handheld's resolution was? I'm just happy we're not sub-HD anymore. >_<

720p on a 6.2 screen isn't really bad. its still an HD screen.

This will also help the battery life. to last lil more while outside.

I am starting to like the idea of playing in the bathroom then docking it to continue playing in the living room:/

Very disappointed in the 720p screen. I can easily tell a huge difference in quality between a 1080p video/picture and 720p on my tiny 5 inch phone. Pretty sad a new device coming out in 2017 can't hit 1080p. Classic Nintendo move.

Hard to believe these were even designed by the same company.

I guess Nintendo merging their handheld and console divisions has had this effect -- the Switch has more design language in common with the N3DS XL when it's unfolded:

Here's some pics. Amazing device.

I also think the prototype Wii U controller looked much nicer than the final design, I suspect Nintendo deliberately made it look chunkier and more controller-like to avoid the (negative at the time) perception that it looked like a tablet. The "GamePad" name also seemed to stem from that.

Well it's a game of trade-offs, finding the best balance for a given function.

I love my iPad Pro with its superb screen, but I wouldn't play Fifa on it. Or any console game. "This is 20xx" posts need to reflect on controls, and again balance.

I'm not convinced there's a place for a portable console on the market, but as far as I'm concerned I will most likely love it.

with this one i don't know if it's sarcasm or a real post.

How can the screen be 720p when there are only 7 million people on the earth? Fucking Nintendo always the same.
