PlayStation 4 Pro Reviews

Looking good. I'll be waiting for a potential RE7 bundle, or better yet, a Resi themed ps4 pro. :D

When it comes to unpatched games, do the slim, and pro draw the same power?

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
I can confirm that Skyrim runs noticeably worse on the Pro (1080p). Played enough on the standard PS4, to notice the drops which mostly occur in the Riften forest or foggy areas. It's a damn shame since the game does look a hell of a lot better on the Pro.

Visions of Skyrim PS3 are now filling my head...

Why are we tanking Skyrim on the Pro when the native 4K patch that's coming isn't even out until day 1 of PS4 Pro (Thursday)?

lol are you all Gamespot employees?

That's downright crazy if that's the case. There's no reason they should have picked native 4k if they couldn't make it work. With the multitude of other options at their disposal, this seems ridiculous.

I'm all but certain that was one of the things in the docs to devs. Leave it to Bethesda I guess.

They should be able to get it to work at 4K, but Bethesda are relatively weak when it comes to visuals...I ran Skyrim on my old laptop at max settings, 1080p above 30 fps...

chubigans

y'all should be ashamed
But sprinting through dense forests, very foggy areas with lots of alpha effects does feel like a 2-3 fps drop to me.

I get that on the PS4 version as well.

edit: more specifically the area off the start of the game when you escape, but I attributed it more to loading than framerate slowdown. Basically like every Elder Scrolls/Fallout game ever made by Bethesda. :p

They are also patching an older game that's already released. Days Gone and Horizon hit these resolutions, I'm sure ND can as well with more time, but best to focus on the next upcoming game and perhaps SP DLC.

I wonder if we'll start seeing older games getting a pro patch next year when theres enough consoles sold through to customers. If its as easy as Sony are suggesting to add a Pro mode it could be a cheap way for publishers to see a new spike in sales on an old game.

Worse case scenario publishers start to offer a "promastered" version of an older game or some bullshit through a paid for patch a year or 2 after a game releases, which would essentially be the equivalent of cranking up your PC settings. But pubs having the luxury of having console gamers by the nuts, i hope sony doesnt let stuff like that become a reality, even though they've kind of suggested it could happen in one of their FAQs about the Pro.

Based on the reviews and how I have a 1080p tv and how I don't play PS4 as much and how I'd rather spend the extra cash on games, I think I'll wait until my PS4 dies.

Not to say I won't be jealous of Gaffers who get one; enjoy! :)

Skyrim was already patched for the Pro, just like many other games like ESO or Deus Ex.

Is this confirmed? If so, then why has there been no impressions or comments about how it runs on PS4 Pro in native 4K (like the patch will do). Everything I'm seeing talks about 1080p, which is how the standard PS4 or Pro (when connected to non 4K tv) would run it?

Why is no one testing HDD/ SSD speeds :(

With five days to work on the Pro, most actually spent time playing games.

The HDD/SSD teardown and reinstall process on PS4 is time-consuming.

It's coming.

this forum needs more vetting lol

Pretty sure those patches are already out. That said, as I was researching that, I never saw one mention of performance issues from any of the different outlooks who put up videos of that game.... So I'm still skeptical this is actually an issue.

No. The standard PS4 will run it at 1080p.

The Pro will run it at 4k. Doesn't matter what kind of TV you hook it up to; the Pro is still going to render it at 4k. The difference is that it will either display that image in 4k on the screen if you have a 4k screen, or it will scale it down to 1080p, giving you a much cleaner image at 1080p than a standard 1080p image. Either way, the PS4 is theoretically doing the same legwork to render the game in the first place. If anyone is talking about running it on the Pro, the performance should be the same regardless of display. (At least for Skyrim. Other titles have differing methods depending on the screen.)

When the PS3 came out I remember people telling how 20ms and even 16ms were not good enough for a LCD TV. Nos people are rushing to get a 4k HDR tv with triple of that number. This is truly unbeliveable to me. So much hype for it, loads of money to get a not so good experience.

The games that are getting patched ate were not done thinking on 4k so they will look better but not OMG ITS A NEW GAME. Horizon will probably be the first title to have a great result in 4k mode... Even if I had the money to get a 4k now, I would wait at least until the next line of tvs with better tech. Anyone getting a TV now (the "cheaper" ones) will most probably have to upgrade in a few years.

I just see the PRO as a good option for those that are getting a ps4 for the first time now (50 more than the slim 1tb) and for those that have PSVR.

Not referring to you specifically, just your wording lol, but this perfectly illustrates GAF and all the misinfo and confusion as to what's out.

Can anyone confirm the PS4 Pro Skyrim native 4K patch is out?

In my experience, DF is notorious for failing to run games through taxing scenarios where a game has the potential to slow down.

You're confusing display response time and input lag

Frame rate is locked 30 most of the time, from what I can tell. I'm not really sensitive to frame rate slightly lower than 30 fps and it's nowhere near the level of fallout. But sprinting through dense forests, very foggy areas with lots of alpha effects does feel like a 2-3 fps drop to me. ...

I think the extra eye candy is still worth it.

First comment gave me pause, but the second cleared it up. Occasional 2 to 3 fps drop in dense areas with an otherwise 30 fps will not bother me; I won't notice it at all. I've actually seen some big, very noticeable framerate drops on my current playthrough of Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls: Online is a lot smoother though and frame rate doesn't tank as hard as it usually does in trials for example.

This is very discouraging as I have the game bought and sitting here waiting for the PRO to arrive to finally play it.

I could upload a bunch of scenes with frame drops, which at least I haven't noticed before. Obviously I can be totally wrong and it just behaves like the standard version or progressing further into the game could cause other issues like memory leaks.. so take it with a grain of salt. I'm not DF - just confirming what others have seen/experienced - didn't want to talk about it at first, because I have no proof of it running worse but it kinda came to my attention since I've switched to the Pro.

Yeah, while the priority is probably more on all games going forward I do think we'll see more older games getting a patch once these systems are out since they can be used as a way to drum up some extra sales on older titles like you said.

I think since Sony is doing them for free I imagine they are probably prodding other devs not to charge for these patches, though obviously they probably can't demand that, hence their "we don't anticipate it" line in the FAQ, since they expect them to be free but can't force it.

There is no guarantee you'll get lower input lag by waiting. Sometimes you get a range (or individual models) with low input lag, sometimes they're high. Manufacturers don't seem to care that much otherwise they might publish actual figures or try to market a little bit to gamers.

Some of the current range of 4K sets are amazing value and absolutely worth jumping in now that 4K content is starting to be more available. Sony XD800, Samsung KS8000, LG B6 OLED are all great options at various price points.

THE BOTTOM LINE The PlayStation 4 Pro doesn't show major, noticeable improvements in the handful of games we were able to test early, but that could change with titles coming in the months and years ahead.

welp, looks like Ill wait till it goes on sale instead

Wow, What a shame... So you buy a console with more than twice the gpu power to desire you still had your weaker console. This resolution obsession is a waste of power...
It's more Bethesda than a 'resolution obsession'. This certainly isn't the case with the reports of any other game, in fact CoD runs at a more consistent 60fps than the base PS4 ver while being much higher res.

Edit: Oh, anecdotal reports of Deus Ex though stuttering. Don't know what's up with that game, the Pro version has the worst improvement visually as well. I think people may be underestimating the work for some titles to get them to really show an improvement, it's not like you add "set checkerboard rendering=1" in an .ini file.

Could you imagine if there hadn't been a negative review? Would have made it a lot harder to ignore all the others.

Hey Guys

My PS4 is dying and I need to replace it and I have the Pro pre-ordered for Thursday. My gaming on PS4 is the following: BF1, Rainbow 6, (I own All of ND's games) and I am getting TLG when it drops. I however have a 1080 TV with absolutely no plans to upgrade it.

From these reviews I liked the idea of getting a little more performance at 1080 (BF1 needs this) but I am concerned some games might run worse on the PRO as they'll target higher fidelity?

We don't really know yet, there should be more comparisons in the coming days. Modern Warfare runs better on the Pro.

There really should be an option to run it in base mode though, choice is always a good thing.

Go for it, from all the Pro games I've played (6) only Skyrim felt like it had some issues - again which could be totally BS since it's an open world game with many variables. A worse performing Pro supported title would be a PR disaster to say the least.

There were guidelines for certification that games weren't allowed to run worse on Pro. Though based on a few current impressions I wonder how strict they're being on that, but I think more data is definitely necessary before coming to conclusions.
I wonder if they'll be an option to force base mode, in which case you can get the benefits of you want them, but in worst case scenarios you can just play the game as if it's a regular PS4.

If DF say it's good then that's all I need to know. Not saying there can't be negative reviews but I would not look to CNET over DF for opinions on IQ.

Um...Gizmodo, try be more accurate.

It’s not the first console to offer a minute upgrade that further fractures the console market. Back in August, Microsoft released the Xbox One S. Like the PS4 Pro, the Xbox One S is very much a mid-cycle stab at relevance designed to take advantage of all the 4K TVs in the world now. Besides games in 4K with HDR, the Xbox One S, included a UHD Blu-ray player to entice buyers. The PS4 Pro is banking on fans just wanting considerable visual upgrades to their games

The Xbox One S upscales its games. Saying "Games in 4K" is a bit misleading. If a less informed consumer read this paragraph they'd believe Xbox One S plays games in 4K. Which it obviously doesn't.

People in the Eurogamer thread are talking about how many reviews are saying the PS4 Pro is extremely loud. Some reviews saying its louder than OG PS4.

Can you quote me one review that says the Pro is "extremely loud?"

Edit: In fact, I didn't see anyone in that thread saying that. There are a total of 12 posts out of the current 700+ that even mention the word "loud."

Awesome, picking up the Pro with trade-in of my OG PS4 along with Titanfall 2.

Can't wait for Thursday! Sure we will see more but this is very positive and I'm ok with the price point as an interim-cycle upgrade.
