Thank you so much Verendus, it may sound silly but when you spoke about Noctis growth into a man i legit teared up.

I just want to ask you one thing: where do you think Square Enix and Final Fantasy can go from here?

After reading Verendus's review, my main take-away is:

Thank god for dual-audio; mediocre localization dampening poignant moments is something I can do without.

Verendus liked BvS...thought it was going to be liked by the general audience, false prophet.

Will the game be like the demo and have Japanese and English? Living in Japan and would rather just pick it up at the shop than buy it digitally.

Top favourite overall, FFX

Quite different from Verendus' taste.

Will FFXV top all these categories for me?

My Impressions from Verendus' Impressions:

+Monster design and animations are impressive.
+Battles can have some interesting nuance depending on the skills and weapons you want to employ.
+There is a sense of wonder and discovery through exploration in the first half, the day/night cycle enhances that.
+Side activities are there if you want them but ultimately don't effect the pace of the story since critical moments are relegated to the second half.
+Lots of hunts (likely some that will challenge your skill in combat more than the final boss will).
+The second half does a good job of moving the story along at a decent pace.
+The relationship between the 4 main guys is well developed.

-The open world (first half) lacks variety in the environments. Mostly desert.
-Bro banter gets tiring.
-English VA misses the mark (thank gods that we can play it in Japanese with the intended tone).
-There is a stark contrast between the first and second half of the game (almost as if this game started development with other ideas in mind and with a different director).
-Luna is an underdeveloped character. Not very likeable, too "perfect".
-"Experimental" design decisions.
-You struggle with the camera the entire game.

Can anyone confirm if the menu/text language be changed like in MGSV? I'll be buying the game i nJapan and I'm all for the Japanese dub but item names and text in Japanese is gonna be killer. I gave up on the Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts because of that.

It was possible in Episode Duscae and Platinum Demo. So I'm sure it'll be possible in the retail version too.

this confirms they really blew it with the english VA. it's pretty unacceptable

XIII was better, 6 years ago (and still heavily anime influenced)

XII was a decade ago. not good.

I still think that the focus on a worldwide release with multiple european languages all on day 1 really stressed them to focus less on quality. FFXIII was released after its Japanese release so they had more time to work on it. I don't remember any other mainline FF game getting a worldwide release.

Chillax, just as you'd have to take Verendus' positive impressions as one person's opinion of the game, you'd also have to take his criticism of the localization as one person's opinion of the localization.

It doesn't confirm anything objective. Plenty of people are going to play the game in English, just as plenty of people are going to decide the game simply isn't for them.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I anticipate a string quartet version, a piano concerto version, a rap version but no vocal version.
plz no, the vocal version is life

Has been my biggest worry since the first screenshots, but at least it sounds like it improves

He didn't say that, he said:

Unlike the prior entries however, Final Fantasy XV isn't extravagant in its design, nor does it hit you with its eccentricities as soon as you begin. It starts subdued, and somewhat bland. You realize it's a fantasy title thanks to the monsters roaming the landscape, and the strange points of interest dotted around you. Maybe that's fitting thanks to the slower pace of the earlier chapters, but it's also no less immersive. Taking influence from the United States, the Caribbean, and several European countries, it's an amalgamation of styles that leads to quite a cohesive and engrossing world that grows stranger the deeper you head inside. It's a pretty clear design choice, and it works quite well. It's a fantasy based on reality after all.

The journey through the world somewhat reflects the journey of Noctis and his companions. It begins in a relaxed manner, and the earlier areas reflect this. The opening area is about as bland as I've seen in any game, but by the time I reached the end of the first region, it began picking up. More interesting visuals, stronger contrasts, and more fantasy that crept in. The changing of day to night, and the weather helped add further atmosphere and believability to it all, especially as the enemies you encounter can differ. It's those touches which make this world feel more alive and sparkling with personality than ever.

First region (Leide) is bland, not first half. The open world part itself becomes more and more interesting and more and more fantasy as you progress through chapters.

How the fuck are you supposed to follow all the banter in Japanese? I hate reading subtitles for every single thing that has been said. So annoying. How can you fuck up the VO so bad?

Sorry...but Persona 5 or even P4G, are not nearly in the budget region of FFXV.

The subtitles are kinda tiny too. I think it'd be hard/close to impossible to pay attention to them in the midst of battle. English is really the only viable option for me.

But I don't have a problem with reading subtitles, unlike you, been reading them all my life.

This probably has been asked before but with banter being different between the Japanese and English version, will the English subtitles correctly reflect what's being said when playing with Japanese dub?

As I said, I hate when I have to read everything, which is the case in Japanese. I usually always play with subtitles.

I really doubt they translated the game twice.

Reading Verendus' post, I am really, really happy! The things he tells us show me that my interpretation of this game from the outside is largely correct: it is open, but not a sandbox to mess around in while the story takes a step back. The combat requires tactical deliberation and focuses on the warp mechanic to position yourself and attack where you deem necessary at that point. The story is still a massive, epic tale, while using the four comrades to drive the moment-to-moment conversations and story. I kinda expected magic to be rather disappointing, as it never seemed to be intuitive and definitely not fast paced. Shame about the localisation, but I can generally stand awkward dialogues (hell, Tales series is my second favourite series of all time!), so I think I won't be too bothered by that.

All in all, I absolutely cannot wait for this game! Those ten days are going to be a hard wait, but I expect it to be more than worth it!

Thank you so much for your impressions, Verendus.

Man, what the fuck? Real talk here, reading that made me tear up. I've never had anything like that happen to me just by reading someone say they liked a game. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I guess it's the feeling of relief because yes, it is good. I didn't wait so long for a game that ended up being kind of shitty. All of the hard work to desperately trying to buy my PS3 back in 2008, fearing the game would come out and I wouldn't have one, hahaha, a PS3 was worth months of my salary back then.

I've believed all the way through, but I guess there was still some doubt in my heart, since I'm feeling like this after reading his thoughts.

I welcome Tabata as my new king, can't wait for his next crazy ride in this new IP he wants to work on.

Verendus' impressions confirmed my best and worst fears for the game.

I am thrilled to know the modern cancer of gaming that is 'open world' is not gonna plague this game for its entirety (at least that is my assumption based on what he said in the non spoilered parts...didn't read the others)

However at the same time he mentions it lacks plot events and cutscenes. Now a lack of plot beats and events has been in FF since X...but it was particularly bad in XII and XIII. The old FF's...particularly ps1 ff's had a huge amount of story and plot content! Loads of stuff happened! Each town had a compelling cinematic skit to it that further deepened the overarching plot. It sounds like XV doesn't have this.

I love cutscenes! XIII'/ were amazingly directed!!! Wanted something along these lines! But this doesnt sound like a MGSV situation and his set piece comment has me hyped so hopefully i will not mind this.

The rest he said hyped me! Can't wait!

? But FFXIII is full of cutscenes, it's the most cinematic FF out there. What you mean o_O

No way XIII's VA is better than XV's... really?

When Verendus was criticizing the VA I thought it was just a repudiation of the typical recent FF dub... not that it was in particular worse.

I could believe it, though. FFXIII's storyline was conveyed through a series of very scripted melodramatic cutscenes. I can see how they would have been able to focus on polishing those, even if the result was kinda anime crap. Perhaps XV's emphasis on in-game party dialogue diminished polish because it doesn't have the focus of scripted cinematic scenes and they just recorded a thousand random lines.

XII's VA, I miss you.... for a moment I thought you'd become a dramatically respected series...

Thanks for the impressions Verendus, well written and exhaustive!

That day comes November 29th, 2016.

Favourite game since Metal Gear Solid 3.
Second favourite Finale Fantasy of all time.
Game of the year.
Game of the generation.

Tabata era. Bahamut represent. Balee dat.

Hot damn. I've never really been a big FF fan, and have only ever actually played FFX properly so I'm a newcomer. This is making me intrigued.

@Verendus How easy do you think the game's story is to grasp if you haven't kept up with the characters, the anime and movie?

Imagine how awkward/hilarious it would be when we were overhyped by Verendus's big words, and comes the review day, the game scores less than 70. Not likely it would happen, but someone's gonna drink a lot that day.
