Continuing my habit of missing Blood Bowl products because GW plan quantities with a d100, I missed the Blood on the Snow terrain. Pre-purchased at the first opportunity but still missed, smh.
So I had 20 bucks worth of paper that magically changed in a squad of Rubric Marines and a Dark Vengeance starter.
This hobby will be the death of my budget.

Still need the Sigmar starter and maybe some Exalted Sorcerors / Tzaangors and I will have to seriously slow down.

I was really interested in the different terrain sets for Blood Bowl but I think I'm just going to build my own field with integrated dugouts and scoring.

I would love a custom field like this no doubt though.

Something that has been floating on the back of my mind since I got back into the hobby: do you see GW going back to square rounds in the future ? I have a lot a painted minis that are not based, I could order some round bases and get a nice army boost / some starting armies.

I doubt they go back to requiring square bases so stick them on whatever you like. Curiously though there's a rumour that they're about to re-release the Island of Blood set and it'll come with both square and round bases.

Paint problems.

Vallejo Game Color Lively Green and Camouflage green don't stick. No matter how hard i shake them. I saw others complain about this elsewhere too... Someone said they should be stirred, not just shake. But how do i stir something in a small bottle with very small nozzle?

Second, i recall someone somewhere recommending Citadel gun metal for... well, guns, cannons, the like. What exactly is the name of the color? Local gaming store has good range of Citadel paints but i couldn't figure which ones were metallics. (No, i didn't ask from staff for some reason.)

And because why not, i made this too:

Camouflage netting cloak. Not actually attached, just cut a piece of the cloth, folded it and cut a small hole for the 'Mech's head.

I suppose the go-to Citadel metallic gun paint would be Leadbelcher.
Leadbelcher then Nuln Oil then, if you want, some edge highlighting with Runefang Steel, classic metal.

Thanks, i think i'll get those if available, along with some other greens since i don't think i trust these Vallejo greens.

To be perfectly clear this is more than what you asked for. Leadbelcher is the metallic paint. Nuln oil is a shade that enhance the details of the gun. Runefang Steel is a brighter metallic paint that you only apply on the borders of the gun to make it pop more.
But ymmv, you may prefer the more aggressive color of Runefang and paint the whole thing with it, you are the judge. Citadel has some nice metallic paints, I really liked Balthasar's Gold when I tried it the other day. Everything but gold though, more what I would imagine copper to look like.

Ah, i see. Not sure i need shades and paints for highlighting. Still working on basics but i'll try to expand my color options. Better to have too many options than be missing something when you want it.

The next set of minis i'll paint, i'll try what i did before but simpler (less mixed paints, skip an unnecessary layer), while trying to improve the wash.
Unfortunately the greens i have aren't co-operating...

You can hold off on a whole slew of colors for now, but I'd definitely recommend a shade. If we're going by Citadel colors, Nuln Oil is fantastic. Agrax Earthshade and Reikland Fleshshade have also pulled a lot of weight for me. You'll be blown away the first time you apply a shade properly, it can really elevate your work for very little effort. I'm painting my Ork Blood Bowl team right now and I intend to use a single wash once all my colors are down. I'll try and post a before and after here.

You know when I'm not feeling so lazy I will take a slew of pics of the minis I have painted since my return to the hobby and heck, why not put them on a tumblr or one of those fancy toys you kids are using.
I'm sadly not a good painter but hey... ^_^

Will be interesting to see if I'm getting better as time passes.

Style has always been more important to me than technical ability. I mean, that's obviously important too but painting everything just like the box is so ho-hum and uninspired. I think coming up with your own style should be just as important as any other aspect of this hobby. Keep that in mind as you progress.

Although I'm mostly a lurker here I still like to post when I've actually got round to finishing something :)

After three months solid work as and when I can he's finally done, this has been arguably the most satisfying thing I've ever painted. I think I remember posting him here in January when I assembled him.......

He was actually "finished" a month ago but it took another month to paint all the weapon options!

I'm definitely going to spend the next few months painting small models, a Celuxus Assassin is next on the list :)

He looks great. Those huge models seem really expensive until you pour tens of hours into assembling and painting them!

Here's a close up of 4 monochrome fatties (pre blood application). Regular, Toxic, and Berserker. I still have to do my Skinners, which will be purple.

Also, while I'm thinking about it...

I said in an earlier post that I would show the baseball display used for miniatures. This case holds 3 baseballs. The ball bases pop right off and you can put your minus in there instead. This has glass sides & top with a mirrored back.

I just filled this case with what I have handy as an example. When it is actually completed, I will have raised the bottom a bit and also painted it to look like the game board (which is an urban street in this case).

What should I be buying to paint figurines and whathe video tutorials should I be watching? Tossing between tau start collecting or getting a kill team box

Helicon that is some fantastic work. I almost went for similar colors on my Ork team. Do you have shots of the weapon options up close?

Eskimo, great work as always. What a great idea using cases like that. I almost picked up that one glass case from Ikea the other day but I might go with this route.

I really like the painting tutorials from Duncan Rhodes on the Warhammer YouTube channel. The Daily tips are sometimes specific subjects like gems or energy orbs but there are also very useful general things like basing and all sorts of skin tones. The longer videos for whole models display even more techniques. Even if you aren't planning on getting that specific model there are usually still worthwhile techniques to use on display.

I'd lean towards the Kill Team box because it would also serve as an introduction for a friend.

Thanks! I'll try to get some shots of the weapons and post them tonight. I'm considering doing a Cerastus Lancer at some point soon, they're bigger but won't take as long as there's only one weapon set up!

Love it! I still need to put transfers on mine. Did you use an airbrush?

Thank you! All of it, except the silver for the skeleton which was leadbelcher spray, was brushed.

Each panel took about 5-6 coats (2 macragge blue, 2-3 sotek green), in the wise words of Duncan, many thin coats. The cream panels however.........at least eight very thin coats. Cream is a bitch.

I just spent over $500 CDN on miniatures in the last 2 days. Someone stop me.

Cool Mini had some great deals. I couldn't stop clicking the ADD buttons!

https://wargameexclusive.com/ - These minis are just too darn cool.

Now I just have to really buckle down and start painting more then playing video games. This is going to be a challenge.

I need to start posting my finished work to keep me motivated to keep painting at least on a daily basis, even if it is just for an hour or so.

Looks like I missed the Canoness. Didn't remember she was coming for preorder today because I had such a busy day and it seems she's now sold out. Oh well.

I try and balance 4 very distinct, time consuming, and expensive hobbies. Time management is a real challenge at times. I always go towards social hobbies first, but after that I go where my mood takes me.

And yes, painting everyday, even if it's just a little is a great motivator IMO. My Zombicide project has been a real boon to my painting hobby in large part to daily painting. I have just been doing bases the last 3 days so I'm not feeling any major progress like I do when I finish a survivor, but the end is in sight and I'll be onto more fun and progressive stuff very soon.

Everyone should be posting progress here!

I'll try and post my meager progress on my Fightin' Orkish Bloodbowl team. Going for the assembly line method but it makes my slow painting even slower this way.

Don't have time atm to post more but I relate. I hate assembly line painting and feel the process lasts forever. I'm sick of my Reikland Reavers, and I don't even have stellar skills so I can't look for a sublime finish, just solid.
Give me a hero to paint every day but ugh at assembly lines.

I have really be neglecting the miniature hobby and it has me feeling down. I'd love to have time to get out and play and paint, but with school being so time consuming and exhausting it's just easier to sit down and play a couple hours of a game then head to bed.

Curiously, about half of this box is available in plastic and the other half is still only available in resin. I haven't seen anything that indicates the resin-only models are now plastic. Mixed plastic/resin box?

No it's not here. Well, the French edition is already not here anymore. What the living fuck GW, isn't it the day the preorders begin ? Have you downgraded your d100 to determine product numbers to a d10 ?
I mean the English edition is still available and that would totally be fine by me, but still, I'm stunned both at GW customers hunger and GW selling out at such a ridiculous pace. I mean, if you put so few products on preorder that they are sold out in less than a day, why even care ?

I'm grumpy.

Well I got my Guild Ball starter box & we've played a match.
Seems really good. Hopefully I can get my group excited by this, because compared to what I've played of Blood Bowl (which is only actually on the computer game version), this seems a lot more fluid and dynamic

Good advice :) I've been trying to focus at 1hr or more a day on painting.

What I need to do is start getting people involved, even if it is just me updating stuff here or writing guides or something. Keep the brain in the game.

Last night I was painting Mortarian, AKA trying to finish this model, and for once did some really good wet blending. When a person starts doing something they haven't really gotten down tap yet and it produces great results, it feels so great.

I'm going to finish this damn miniature and do a fun picture update. All your posts are really encouraging.

Bless you, a new post ! This thread needs love, people !

On my side I finished my Reikland Reavers and decided to paint the Tau squad in the Kill Team box (so that I can say I painted a whole box, that would be cool T_T )
And... they look like shit. What a surprise...
Now I'm always really hard on myself but I have several issues, general and specific to these models.

On the specific side...
- As expected, Duncan is nice and all, but inking only the recesses of the Tau armor ? Yeah, no. Their hardware (missile launcher and drones) have nice recesses but the Taus' ones are not so accentuated enough and my attempt at inking gave me horrible brown lines.
My solution ? Well as a general brown inking was out of the question I attempted a general inking but with a lot more water, in order to have *some* brown where there should be and a general used / dirty look to the armor.
And I mean, it worked... in a way. The test Tau I did really looks like I has gone through hell.
But that's not really the original look of the minis and it annoys me to think I can't do the Taus as intended.

On a broader side...
- Since my return to the hobby I still have trouble with my paint consistency, and this pisses me off greatly.
I do everything like a good boy, I use a wet palette, I water my paint on it, I take care to not take too much on the brush and... all I get is brush traces, and even some paint blobs in the worst cases. But I swear if I water the paint some more it won't adhere, I'm really not painting from the pot like I could have 15 years ago.
And why the fuck do my bigger brush leaves micro particles on the mini. Maybe I don't look after my brush well enough and there is too much dust in the room (?)

Rant finished. I guess I should take some pics...

The largest factor in my painting progress is easily having g my own painting space. I actually pack everything up and put it all away when the family needs the dining room for a family get together or whatever. It's a major process setting up and breaking down. But when I'm all set up, it's so easy to sit and knock out any number of goals I have (my basing for example).

Another thing I do is pair hobbies. Right now I am marathoning the Simpsons. I can sit down and say "I'll watch 2 episodes" and I'll just paint as much as I can during that 45 minutes. It also acts as a timer of sorts because sometimes I can get caught up in painting and lose hours upon hours when I could/should be doing other things, like eating and sleeping lol.

Li Kao, your Tau problem could actually be a "happy accident" if you can reproduce the same effect across the entire squad!

One of the very first miniatures I ever painted was a Striking Scorpion around 30 years ago. This was back before they had inks or washes, so you had to make your own. Anyway, my initial test model did not go the way I wanted based on my wash. After it dried and I had a day of refection I decided it actually looked great. However, when I line painted the other 4 members of the squad I could not reproduce the effect again and I was so frustrated!

This weekend I am going to take some pictures of everything I have. I really got into this hobby big time but haven't put in the same effort painting (Amount of completed Miniatures that is).

Being in my late 30's with no kids (fiancée and 2 cats though), the disposable income is there for insanity purposes (buying instead of honing skills).

But I am lucky to have that painting space to work out of. A person can really hit the ground running fast when everything is setup to go.

One thing I haven't done at all to my miniatures is placing a Finish on them.

I am personally not a fan of Glossy. Just doesn't look right. Matte looks better. Reading up on it, some people say do a Glossy into a Matte finish. Anyone experience that?

Do I even need to do a Finish for protect? Shrug :)

The Isle of Blood set contained entirely plastic models. So this is 100% plastic. But many of the models are only available in plastic with this set, the regular individual versions being finecast or metal.

Ok, so I quickly took some pics and I don't know what to think anymore.
Yesterday I was hard on myself, but as SillyEskimo said putting a night on it threw a new light on things. I think I now prefer the dirty look of the Tau to the cleaner machines.
But now that I share pics, I'm just ashamed of myself.

So keep in mind that this is WIP (some paint overflows, no lighting up some details, even whole details missing).
The thing that strike me as must-correct is the disgraceful ink patterns on the helmet / shoulder / backpack. Don't know how I will be able to correct that as I fear that just painting more Ulthuan Grey will not look good.

Those Tau are absolutely fine. Throw some good basing on there and it will elevate the models even further.

If you're feeling a bit blah about them, complete one of the models. I'm talking based, highlighted, and varnished. Set it in front of you and glance at it occasionally as you paint the rest. A single finished model can be absolutely inspiring.

This hobby is making all my self esteem issues so evident.
On a more positive note, I don't have the time or experience (never did dioramas) but seeing the general weariness of the model I thought a whole squad like that in a muddy jungle landscape wouldn't be to shabby.

Daily progress: 7 runners, a fattie, and an abomination. I'm just basing them as I go now.

2FD36607-EB9E-4334-83E0-D1DF96BCB359.jpg

Tomorrow I want to at least finish two survivor and zombivor works in progress, 2 fatties, and 4 runners. We'll see if I can pull that off. If I can do 8 runners I'll be impressed with myself, lol.

The zombie horde is indeed growing, slowly but surely!
