Digital Foundry: Rise of the Tomb Raider PS4/Pro Patch 1.06

Oh wait so ROTR can be backwards patched because the community has asked for them to fix their shit but naughty dog limits the game's options when the community is not happy?

I remember a few people blaming the users for complaining back with the TLOU patch. It's funny now, isn't it?

Richard says the game feels much better than the Xbox One version, I mentioned the same thing in another thread.

There's a small yet quite important difference between previous input-lag free on ps4 version and "much better than xbox one version".

I'm reading input lag is back with a vengeance. True or false?
False. From what I played, at worst, it would be back to a very minimal amount of input lag (like the previous patch 1.04). I don't feel that difference at 60fps though, maybe it's just when running at 30fps... But the 30fps modes are so much smoother now that it shouldn't matter.

So funny that the game is so much better on PS4 Pro being that it was a bought exclusive

Not sure what's actually funny about it, it was always going to run better once it hit the Sony hardware regardless of it being a timed exclusive. Microsoft could hardly put in the contract to gimp future versions on superior hardware.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

No more frame pacing and acceptable lag, at least much better than XB1. And to think we had people in the original patch topic claiming how it was so much worse than ever now ...

The GAF hyperbole machine never ceases to amaze.

Picked it up off PSN last night for $23.99. Not going to play it till I upgrade from my OG Ps4 to Pro. Glad they're addressing the issues...

I've only experienced this game in two ways. Patch 1.05 and 1.06. The game now feels very sluggish to me. I can't imagine how it must have felt to play it with even more input lag.

Started up a new game just the other day, first time through on PS4 and thus only have experienced 1.06. Feels a tad sluggish at times buttt have to be honest, I played the whole game through on XB1 and it never bothered me too much there either. Have had a great time with both versions, and it's nice to see Nixxes really work away at whittling down issues.

The lag is incredibly distracting in this game. It really ruins the shooting aspect. I pretty much just shotgun everything since it's a pain getting headshots with any of the other weapons.

And I'm usually the last person to bitch about technical problems, but this really messes up a big part of the gameplay for me. It's just something I don't deal with in any other game.

Dying Light would be amazing with a Pro patch. The expansion needs one desperately, the frame rate is pretty terrible while driving around.

Is PS4 Pro the only console on the market or something, they really love it at DF.

🙄 It's not like they don't test the xbone and PC versions of new games. Funny since for the longest time people have been calling Richard an Xbox fanboy. How hard is it to understand that people are clambering for info about the pro related patches for these games? What else do you want them to test?

The platform is a month old and general hobbyists, new owners, and potential buyers alike have an eye on it. I can't think of many other games being overlooked to allow this coverage.

Its just turning me off the channel as I'd rather have a variety of systems and games tested than just concentrating on 1 system only. Yes its the new shit and its really good (the short time I've had one) but variety is the spice of life.

DF is getting to be really annoying. Personally their shit about resolution and frame rate testing is ruining gaming for me. It's like we can't just enjoy a game without worry about what framedrops happen where or what dynamic resolution a game is using.

And people are into it so much to dick wave which version of a game is better. It's getting old.

DF retro is the only thing they have that interests me anymore.

People who care about the sort of stuff Digital Foundry look into (frame rates, input lag, frame pacing, IQ etc) are definitely the sort of people the PS4 Pro has potential appeal to.

Sue me, but I'd never have bought The Last Guardian if I *didn't* know the PS4 Pro version ran at a near solid 30.

Speak for yourself. For those of us that can't help these things getting in the way of enjoying a game, having this information is hugely important. I don't give two craps if it upsets or provides ammunition for console warriors. I couldn't play Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 and wasted my money on a game I couldn't get into due to the frame drops. Frame pacing problems also do my head in.

And what I mean by that is that it pulls me right out of the game and the world. For me, frame pacing problems, or frame drops below 25 fps for any extended period of time, is like having someone who keeps talking during the movie. I really wish I could ignore it, but I can't.

Then just avoid DF articles? It's not like you don't know exactly what the point of their coverage is.

Haven't played in some time but I remember Shadow Fall being a truly impressive looking game at launch, really jawdropping. A pro version would be pretty epic.

Shadowfall was just a rushed tech demo showcase forthe PS4's launch the game is bad.
But yeah for a day 1 PS4 launch title it's impressive

You should direct your anger at sloppy developers that introduce all of these problems in the first place.

DF is basically a consumer watchdog, they're on your side. Without them, no one would be holding developers feet to the fire when they sell you a shoddy product.

What's really annoying are consumers who don't have any standards for what they pay for and actively defend studios that release unoptimized and untested games.

Insane For Sony
Someone in the other thread here measured input lag. It was 30ms less in 1.06 than in 1.0. He couldn't measure how much it was in 1.04 as you can't downgrade updates obviously.

Like I said. What do you want them to test right now?

They did tests on titanfall 2, ffxv, cod, battlefield, dishonored, watchdogs, Skyrim, Arkham remaster, mafia, rotr, gears, forza, dead rising remaster, etc.

articles on the switch, new PC GPUs, Xbox backward compatibility, retro games, psvr, 4k/hdr tvs

I'm certain you have not touched the MP, as only people who have not can say it is a bad game!

Waiting on a nice deal for a 55" bravia to check the 4k mode, but so far the game looks phenomenal on the PRO. Huge props to Nixxes for the support.

I hope you realize that's because it's a new console .. expect the exact same when Switch comes out or later still when Scorpio comes out. This is even more unique than Switch because aside from just 'new hardware new games' here we're seeing older games being revamped to match the new hardware which warrants a look.

Let's see if you still have the same reservations next year.
