I am 100% in for the 3DS version.

Being able to play it as a an oldschool sprite based DQ or something more modern is too cool.

Its going to be really interesting replaying this game.

Dragon Quest VIII (2004) sold ~1m more than Final Fantasy XII (2006)
Dragon Quest VII sold 1.5m more than Final Fantasy IX (both in 2000)

And Dragon Quest is a traditional RPG. I don't know how you can sell to the west a game with a cliche storyline (good vs evil), turn based battle system and the same structure since the 80's
And I say this as a huge DQ fan

Where are you getting your numbers from?

This game looks so promising to me. I can't wait. I prefer medieval settings over modern/futuristic settings of ff 15.

This will almost certainly be my game of the year 2017. Dragon Quest is my all time favorite series.

Playing DQVII now on 3DS and love it.

I love that DQ doesn't try to be something that it isn't. Each game feels like a natural evolution of the first three.

There are other series out there that do the things you're talking about. It's nice to have a constant in the gaming world that you can rely on. It's the equivalent of comfort food.

I agree, these days the old style jrpg pickings are slim on a standard basis
Trails
Neptunia
Atelier

All fun stuff but outside of the trails series doesn't match DQ in quality

God I love DQ. Watched this trailer so many times now.

I love the storytelling of DQ. It has this distance to its subjects, this ability to tell macroscopic tragedies, comedies, and romances that transcend the scope of more "in the characters" story-telling techniques.

I also just love the idea of a party based epic JRPG and that is a note DQ keeps hitting despite the decreasing feasibility of such a game.

And then there's just that DQ charm and flavor.

It is amazing stuff.

This recent resurgence of DQ is rather refreshing.

So many quality titles being released & made,XI being the best example of that.

It would seem like its been an eternity since this series had this much coming out in the home console space.

I want a new anime series. Captain N style, where it visits the various dimensions/installments. That would be awesome.

More games should look to Persona 5 as inspiration as Persona 5 is a true classic turn based rpg,its just that the menu is mapped to the face buttons/triggers instead of picking every action from a list (exceptions being using items, and optionally, choosing Personas.) In my opinion this is genius the true perfect evolution of the gebre and I think that Dragon Quest as well as all classic turn based Jrpgs should blatantly and shamelessly ape that style.

It's both traditional and modern without the need for ATB or real-time nonsense.

They said they are releasing the versions at the same time.

They said they'd like to. Given how behind the HD version looks, I doubt it will. Internationally, maybe. Japan, no. With FF15 bombing relative to other FF console games, it's clear that console gaming needs a major rethink in Japan.

Yup! DQ has this amazingly consistent cohesion to it. All its elements come together so perfectly in each game and it's so charming and warm. It manages to balance light humor, bright visuals and also foreboding danger expertly. When I think of "adventure" I think of Dragon Quest. And I love the typical vignette style taken to towns. I like the idea of adventurers traveling the world and helping those they come across. It's simple but effective.

Dragon quest should just stay the way it is. No need to ape Persona or any nonsense evolution of the genre.

I'd be fine with and prefer that but the speculation that XI will have a similar battle system to DQX has me a bit worried so ,I think P5's system is the perfect compromise if they have to. change it.

Also, come on, like I said P5's battle system is true classic tactical party turned based. The only difference is the menu is mapped to Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square, and Left and Right trigger.

The actual output would be the same as DQVIII.

For example how itd work Attack is mapped to Triangle, Spells is mapped to Circle, Abilities are mapped to Cross, Tension is mapped to Square, Flee is mapped to left trigger.

When you press Triangle or Circle, the respective Spells/Ability menu pops up. I mean, it literally works the same exact way as old DQ games with the exception of the removal of one menu.

I get you, but just abit worried since the first Xenosaga had physical attacks mapped to the buttons, and I got quickly bored of the battle system in that game. Looking back the only good Xenosaga battle system wise was 3. In that game they got rid of this system and went more like your typical Jrpg turn based with a little bit of tweaks, and it seems that people enjoyed it more.

I don't think P5s battle system is really comparable to Xenosaga's. There arent any button combos "kick, punch, throw" or anything. When you press attack, your character attacks the highlighted enemy with their weapon. And you can input your moves as fast or as slow as you'd like.

Man I have no idea what version I wanna play this in first. It seems like VII and VIII 3DS will be fairly similar to XI's 3D-polygonal look on the 3DS, so by the time it comes out, I think I'll already have my fill of that aesthetic. As of now, I can't decide between the vast, glorious looking version on the PS4, vs the adorable, charming retro 2D mode on the 3DS.

I hope I can turn off one of the screens on the 3DS or replace it with something else, it looks distracting the way it is right now.

Hopefully they give this game a good romance story too!

The simple and straightforward yet cute and warming love story in DQVIII was really entertaining for me, gave me warm and fuzzy feeling.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
DQ is one of the last tent poles of honest to goodness JRPG chicken soup for the soul. Just amazing to be able to get a super traditional, brightly colored JRPG in 2017.

It's nice to be able to say I've never played a bad DQ game. Because I haven't. They don't exist.

I hope the game is turn based and not the weird semi action thing from DQX

If it is some hybrid or an auto battler for your party, I am out. They have been making turn based more boring as time goes on first by limiting your active party size and then by removing control of your party. Then you get stuck issuing commands for 1 member of the party and the rest just follows your inputs. It is dreadfully boring and not what I play turn based games for. Spinning 1 plate is not as engaging as spinning 3 or 4 or 5. Their simplification for the masses has not attracted new people and just drives people away who were already fans.

I would like to say in for the Switch version if it's the same as the PS4 one, but the recent leaks make it sound like it would run seriously gimped :/

Hope we'll get something on Dec 29 or Jan 12.

In DQ? DQ has had 4 party members since DQ3, and I think allowing auto battling for everyone but the main character started in 6, and it's optional and not usually optimal outside of grinding and sometimes the AI anticipating needing to heal.

I would prefer turn based over a Ni No Kuni type of system, but it depends how well it is implemented, I guess. I don't think there's a lot to gain from adding field positioning, and there's a lot to lose in the form of necessitating party AI.

Considering how much they're willing to change of secondary gameplay systems (the dropping of jobs for weapon classes in 8 was pretty huge), I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 version tries to shake things up a bit.

Mostly right, but a few corrections.

Auto battling began with DQ4. I. The nes version, you couldn't control the party in chapter 5. They changed that in the remakes though.

Dragon quest has a party of three. Again, changed in the remake

World of Final Fantasy did just that. It offered two layouts, one is mapped to face buttons, the other is more like the classic.

Ah, nice. I guess the OP says that the footage is from those versions, not that they're the only ones, my mistake.

Can one switch to sprites in the PS4 / Switch versions, or is it a 3DS exclusive feature?
We don't know what Switch version is, but it's probably ~PS4 version. You can't switch to 2D in PS4 version and I'd imagine not Switch version either.

Switching from 2D to 3D is a feature made for the 3DS, since it has two screens (even though the feature go to one-screen only after the intro, the marketing will largely be based on that double-view).

Maybe they'll port both 2D and 3D versions to smartphone though.

With the Switch's specs revealed does anyone really want that version to be a downgraded PS4 version 1840 glfops > 150 glops ? Better to have the 3DS version with better framerate and higher rez textures...

Why make a version worse when you can make one better.

I was thinking about that. Maybe it's for the best if the Switch gets a much better 3ds version than a much worse PS4 version. But I think they will port the ps4 version anyway.

Which DQ had a party of three and was changed? DQ2 is the only one with 3 as far as I know.

3DS is still probably a greater amount weaker than the Switch than the Switch is to the PS4 though. It would feel like a cop out to put that version on the Switch.

The ps4 version's battle system is now fully in third person view as opposed to first, or partially first. From the look of things, the battle seem to take place in real time location as opposed to a separate screen?

Just like DQX. Wouldn't surprise me if the battle systems are the same.

The PS4 battle screenshot looks weird, maybe because the enemies are too small or just the angle. The previously released battle screenshots from the PS4 version looked better.

The new town looks good but its layout seem to be different from the PS4 and the 3DS. Seems like they the maps will vary a lot from one version to the other.
