Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Don't see RDR 2 coming out in less than a year. May 2018 is my guess. Rockstar has never hit their original release date so until it actually happens, im expecting a delay announcement around E3 2017.

As for other IP's, out of them all, I prefer Days Gone. Don't care about Battlefront 2 and have no interest in Destiny. Probably won't happen but Days Gone is number one on my list out of all their first party games and sadly, it probably is 2018 or beyond. Really wish Sony stops showing games that are years away because it's depressing at times. :(
This is exactly why I hope God of War and/or Days Gone hit next fall. I'm not interested in shooters (well online ones) and like you said RDR2 is primed for a delay. Having those games in the fall would give me some things to play then, but they are unlikely. Although with recent info from Cory Barlog maybe GOW will be out

At the very least I'm sure I'll have Detroit to play

The only thing that makes me wonder is the fact that Miyazaki said he was done with Souls. My hope is that he doesn't consider Bloodborne "Souls" despite the similarities because Bloodborne has a lovely world, some phenomenal gameplay and bosses, and was just a fantastic experience.

He was talking about Bloodborne too. Here's a later interview with Miyazaki:
This game marks a major "turning point" within the Dark Souls series. Just as it's been announced, we have two DLCs planned, but as it stands now, I'm not thinking about making any sequels or spin-offs. That applies to Bloodborne as well.
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/dark-souls-3-director-talks-franchises-legacy-poss/1100-6441636/

That's why I expect a New Souls-like IP from From and Sony, just like they made Bloodborne instead of Demon's Souls 2. The original Souls team hasn't made a sequel yet, they went from Demon's Souls to Dark Souls to Bloodborne, so why would they start now?

When the PS4 exclusive SpiderMan rumors started, I really thought they'd be the ones developing it.
As did I. I'm personally glad they aren't though. Not because they wouldn't do an incredible job, and if it were them I would be hyped for it, but I prefer Sony's first party studios to work on their own creations

The real question is if he is still in charge of a team as a creative director there

Would love to get something new (or a Puppeteer sequel) from him

This is the last I heard about Gavin and the Puppeteer team, back in early 2014: https://www.engadget.com/2014/03/21/puppeteer-director-to-pursue-smaller-games-next-steer-clear-of/

Doesn't sound the most promising. I was there Day 1 for Puppeteer. It was such a delightful game! Without hesitation, I'd be there again for a sequel or successor, whether it be in disc or digital form.

I really wanted it and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - which was also brilliant - to benefit from the $40 price point. Both did 'okay' sales wise, but it doesn't seem like there is any interest to keep either studio focusing on a sequel.

I think that $40 prices is a great strategy for platformers like those, and Tearaway and Ratchet & Clank. They are still some of my favorite games, so I'm just happy to still get them. At least Ratchet & Clank appears to have been overwhelmingly successful.

I was under the impression the Souls team, headed by Miyazaki, made the third, but I guess I was mistaken.

I can only hope he's lying as Naughty Dog did when talking about not doing Last of Us Part II. =P

No, Dark Souls 3 was made by the Dark Souls 2 team, Miyazaki just had a more hands-on role with DS3 as one of the three co-directors.

I can't remember Naughty Dog ever lying about not doing TLOU2 but I highly doubt Miyazaki's lying. He really doesn't seem to be interested in making sequels.

I really think Guerrilla Cambridge has something cooking up and has for awhile. They were hiring for a Triple-A shooter in a known franchise over a year ago so probably Killzone...

But man how amazing of a swerve would it be if they're working on a new Resistance?! Imagine an announcement like that at PSX next year!

During their PSX panel, they all talked about how hard it was to lie about not doing TLOU2.

Cambridge are working on Killzone for sure. Dunno if it's gonna be anything interesting though. I still have Shadow Fall lying around unopened.

I want sequels to The Getaway, Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Until Dawn, but I won't ever get those.

So just give me Gran Turismo already.

At E3, Bend said that Days Gone is a long way off so I'm assuming God of War is the system seller next Fall/Winter 2017 with Days Gone following in Q1/Q2 2018.

RDR will be delayed to Spring 2018 if any past Rockstar release is anything to go by.

I want sequels to The Getaway...

The Getaway is the only series where I believe Sony is leaving money on the table. However, their London team is currently working on smaller projects like VR etc. so I doubt it's crossed their mind in the last decade (whenever they canceled next-gen Getaway).

Honestly, with the amount of BBC crime dramas (inc. more fantasy stuff like Sherlock), that thing will write itself. Have a split narrative between some wannabe inner city gang member/roadman and a member of the metropolitan police.

Crime/corruption/nightlife/london's boroughs/terrorism - there is SO much to draw from.

Well there's a big difference between a couple of voice actors lying about how they're working on an unannounced project and the President of a company lying about their future plans. There's no reason whatsoever to believe Miyazaki's lying.

I enjoy the AAA cinematic model from SIE, but why don't they embrace more B budget games that cover some other genres. Couldn't they have scaled games like Wipeout, Twisted Metal, Untold Legends to their first-party teams / contractors as well?

I'm a bit sad that most studios only doing 1-2 games this gen. I mean:
ND does 2 (and 2 side projects)
GG does 2
SSM does 1
Bend does 1
SP does 2 (and 1 side project)
SD does MLB (and 2 side projects)
MM does 1 (and 1 side project)
GC does VR
London does VR
PD does 1 or 2
JS did 3 already (and a couple of side projects)

Announcement-wise, I only expect SP and Japan Studio do anything. Everything else will going to PS5

Man, i loved both Puppeteer and Thieves of Time. I'm a fan of sly cooper series since PS2 days and i think that new studio did a very good job with Sly 4. I hope there is a sequel/reboot someday. Crash N'sane trilogy till then....

Just so you know, guerrilla cambridge worked on kz mercenary(which was better received), not shadowfall.

Also glad that shitshow got closed

I for one am excited for more killzone.
I think GG Cambridge understand that world and it's lore; would also do a much better project with time unlike how KZ SF turned out.

Surely story would be better at the bare minimum.

For me, getting back to the MP heyday of KZ2 and 3 will also be crucial. KZ2 is still my favourite MP shooter from last gen.

Yep all signs point towards Cambridge making the next Killzone. At this point I have to wonder what the approach is going to be for the series because it feels like it's a bit run its course. Idk I feel like when they unveil it it's going to have to do some really new things to impress people

At this point I think it's safest to assume the big JRPG isn't happening. It's been a long time since he told us about that, and even at the time he said it was early days and it may yet be cancelled. Plus, that's not a genre Sony has ever really invested in and the heyday of the JRPG has well and truly passed now,
Not entirely true and not wrong either. JRPGs still sell but they moved on to mobile (which is where Sakaguchi, Platinum, Matsuno, Level-5 and others are headed)

Sony's caugh wind of that and they're investing in JRPGs again, so that they'd rather revive Wild Arms and Arc the Lad as mobile games instead of a high budget console iteration.

Yup kz2 mp was one of my favorite mp shooter last gen. If anyone can get the series on track, it's cambridge. The stuff they did with mercenary on vita was just incredible

To me, what I would like to see out of an FPS from Sony would either be:

1. A new FPS IP
2. Killzone reboot to something that invokes the imagery and tone of Jinroh.

I didn't mind Shadowfall, but I'm feeling that sci-fi escalation for the Killzone franchise isn't the right path for it.

I still don't understand how GCambridge cannot see how the Helghast are far more compelling than...ugh, I can't even remember their name and I refuse to look them up.

Anyway, a reboot of Killzone from the viewpoint of the Helghast would be a fine thing indeed.

Thing is...

Unless there is a GOOD storyline behind said games, it's actually a bit of a waste to play Helghast because ultimately you'd end up playing the same game, but shooting boringly designed enemies instead of cool red-eyed Helghast designs.

I always felt that if you'd play as Helghast, it'd be better served as a Gears-style TPS game with a team dynamic so that you get to see yourself controlling the Helghast characters from a TPS camera and have a team to build character development in better way.

I've never been a huge stickler for GG's lack of tackling the Helgast storyline from their perspective cause their stories have never been good enough for me to wish I was seeing the enemy perspective. They need to improve that first.
It's a Checkpoint thing. You need atleast a few boxes ticked to get the player invested. Even if the overall plot is bad, the setting might be compelling enough to push you forward.

Red Faction might not have had a good storyline or plot in general, but the idea of a collection of miners pushed to the point of rising up and starting smaller conflicts that escalated into one big revolution was a novel approach that compelled me to see it through to the end.

I loved the greyness and browness of killzone2. The game also had some stellar setpieces. Bridge assault? Dammnnn.. Killzone 3 lost me with all the lollicolours. :/

They bowed to pressure from the outside.
Went all bright and colourful and reduced the weight from KZ2 which was a little sad.

Mind, I still enjoyed the game a lot.

What 1st party IPs I want them to work on by 3rd party:

Until Dawn 2 by Supermassive Games. I feel it could be a hit. My favorite game of the generation so far.
The Order: 1887 by Ready at Dawn. There is a good game somewhere, if they are able to make more gameplay, and less cutscene, a good campaign coop, and bundle a digital copy of the first one, it could be a hit.
Bloodborne 2 by FromSoftware. Nuff said.
Sly Cooper Reboot by Sanzaru. They should if the the movie still coming.
Ratchet and Clank Reboot 2 by Insomniac Games

Please, bring the Killzone franchise back.

If there is a new Killzone, they should take the entire Killzone 2 MP and put it as that, only cosmetic changes like the resolution, textures... but this MP was perfect.

And, of course, the kill chirp!!

Mixed

What are the bad ones to you?

Nam - Bad
Killzone - Bad
Killzone Liberation - Okay
Killzone 2 - Great
Killzone 3 - Okay
Killzone: Shadow Fall - Okay
I think only 1 and shadowfall were bad. But the way people are so adamant that they only make bad games that tick me off. Also I don't count shellshock nam since it was pre wws. If we take metacritic as a reference, only shadowfall and 1 werent good.
Another thing why didn't you count kz mercenary and rigs?
Edit: kz 3 was good but not as kz 2. The weapons feels like they lost weightiness of 2.

As far as those 4Gamer interviews go, Yoshida said that while 2016 was a great year for PS hardware (Slim, Pro, and VR launching), he'd like for 2017 to be a great year for releasing games that take advantage of that hardware. So, I think next year may be a bit more active than some are expecting from them.

That doesn't seem to be happening though. The indie gaming division of PS4 has pretty much disbanded. E3 2016 seemed to have announced far fewer new games than E3 2017. I think a lot of non AAA games have been flops.

It's already not an amazing scene and without Sony pursuing and paying for some indie games, it's only going to look bleaker.

Those two games were made by guerrilla Cambridge, different studio.

As I posted a few weeks back, Guerrilla Cambridge still hiring, and some of the positions dont mention VR at all, so I figure its for something more traditional and Killzone makes so much sense.

It's not like I don't believe you but how can you be sure about this ? It's not especially apparent on his Twitter, but I loved Puppeteer and I would be really happy to see him in charge of something again.

His LinkedIn page says so

Whut.

I'm guessing you meant 2016 announced less than 2015. So a few things:

1) A ton of new games were announced this year, at both E3 and PSX.
2) A ton of indie games have released on the PS4 this year.
3) Two specific indie games with a lot of fanfare, The Witness and Firewatch, did wonderfully.
4) A ton is scheduled for next year already.

I'm not sure what you're looking at.

Assuming Shadowhelper meant that they announced less games this year than last year Sony actually announced the same number of first party games, 6 to be exact, both years for PS4, in addition to the yearly MLB announcement
2015
The Last Guardian (re-announcement)
Horizon Zero Dawn
Dreams
Gravity Rush 2
Gran Turismo Sport
Detroit Become Human

2016
God of War
Days Gone
Death Stranding
Spider-Man
KNACK 2
The Last of Us Part II

Indies and VR games may skew it one way or the other, and I suppose you could argue Uncharted The Lost Legacy for 2016, but as far as AAA games it's been the same both years. If that trend of announcing 6 continues in 2017, we could have some surprises in store
Sucker Punch new IP
New FromSoft exclusive (Bloodborne 2 or new IP)
New Killzone from Guerrilla Cambridge
New game from Sony Japan
???
???

A 3d platformer other than knack 2 haha. Yooka laylee is looking good but i want more like that.

Haha, was just kidding. But you should check out Robot Rescue. It is a vr game (still 3D JnR) and Plays perfectly fine. There were many People hoping for a full game in the PSVR OT. Would be a great new Franchise.
