Television Displays and Technology Thread: This is a fantasy based on OLED

How is there more 4K content than 3D, in terms of physical and digital content? I have more than 250 3D BDs, and that's not nearly all of them. There aren't 100 4K discs available -- and 3D is still being produced. (BTW, not talking about gaming - but eveyone posting that has a point ...)

Keep talking out your ass

127 releases in 2016 and 20+ Announced so far for this year

4K content is outpacing 3D when aligned

Adaptive Refresh as a universal standard in TVs is HUGE and worth waiting for.
Damn right. Honestly the best tech news this week and made my day. But also bittersweet cause now comes the wait...lol.

I'm more interested in Sasmsung's QLEDs this year. They're claiming 100% DCI color space coverage and up to 2000 nits of brightness, this is insane. Also, better viewing angles.
Yea, that Sammy looks freaking insane as well. I need to see it in person, I need to see the light.

EDIT:
Do we have a firm answer on HDMI 2.1 requiring new hardware OUTSIDE of new cables? I haven't been able to find anything about whether or not the ports will be firmware upgradable.
Sadly no firm answer on this.

Meh. New HDMI standard every 3 years and it takes 2+ years for standardization when things really start to use it. I am not worried about support for 8K, we barely have any 4K content nowadays relative to 1080p.
Adaptive-sync and 4K60hz with 10bit and 12bit RGB/4:4:4 sure is nice though.

My X900A is a solid non-HDR 4K TV. If I was using some crap filler 4K TV waiting would be hard. But really outside of HDR support there's not a lot this TV can't do.

It was posted a few pages ago. Requiring new hardware or not will depend on each manufacturer, model, etc. So, in short: even if it doesn't require new hardware the companies will force you to buy new models... lol

Tobias adds, "How an individual piece of equipment will meet the 2.1 standard will depend on the manufacturer and the features. Some manufacturers may be able to achieve 2.1 compliance with just a firmware upgrade; others will require new hardware," he says.

The compliance test is still being developed, so it's all a bit up in the air. Current hardware seems unlikely, unless they somehow gave you hardware that can handle 30 Gbps more throughput than the spec it was built for...haha.

Hopefully Samsung releases an evolution kit for the KS8000. As for buying a new television - the smarter man would by something relatively affordable that doesn't burn a hole in his pocket and upgrade when the need arises.

I was curious about this. Are the actual 'brains' of the Samsung TVs in the Smart Hub? Maybe they could cook something up that works in conjunction with the television to bring it up to HDMI 2.1 spec, add Dolby Vision, etc.

That would be optimal, but seemingly expensive...haha.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Maybe I'm crazy, but it feels like your better of trying to get a 2016 set on the discount vs actively buying the 2017 set.

You're not. That's exactly what it feels like right now after the 2017 LG OLED lineup reveal. Minimum improvement over the 2016 models with HDMI 2.1 on the horizon means opt out for the cheaper option(s) 100%!

My ks9000 fails to even work if I do not have the hub connected (or show anything on screen if I remember right). I actually thought the TV was defective at first, though it's also possible that the TV just does a quick check to make sure you have the oneconnect box plugged.

Ok guys, from what I am reading, it seems to be a good idea to get a 2016 OLED from LG, if Sony or Samsung doesn't make something amazing.

As someone who lives in Europe, which LG OLED model is the one I should buy? My budget is around 2500 EUR.

The B6.

If you're in Germany by chance, look at Media Markt's "Energiewende" deal which will give you a 500€ coupon for hardware above 2000€. The B6 is currently at 2500€ (it went as low as 2200-2300 in recent cyber sales) and you'll have to pay the full price but will get the said 500€ coupon for other purchases.

European prices are still incredibly high compared to the US, sadly.

Right now I can't decide whether to buy the B6 or just wait it out even longer. I'll definetely wait until the B7 releases to be able to actually compare them. But those HDMI 2.1 news sound sweet and like a welcomed standard for years to come. Not an easy decision at the moment.

The 55" (OLED55B6V - if that is the correct one) is around 1800 EUR in Sweden, that size is enough for me. But I'm like you, not sure what to get. I even think about just getting a Samsung KS8000 when they go down further in price until next year or so. The Sony TV I have at the moment is around 8 years old. Anything I get now will be an improvement. :)

That frame TV is relevant to my mother-in-law's interests. She was looking into building some sort of shutter-frame thing to house the TV over her fireplace.

Price is a concern, tho.

Just like we expect the 2016 OLEDs to go down and people jump on them, it seems like there is a consensus with experts in TV tech that the true future of TV will arrive next year with HDMI 2.1, the next OLED iteration or maybe even this years QLED.

With a PS4pro waiting, would it be horrible to jump on the expected sales of Samsungs KS8000/8500 and just wait until late 2018 for the next purchase?

Awesome. Really interested in seeing if the edge lighting is still a problem with the new sets.

That's a technology limitation so I don't expect this to be solved, unfortunately. If they managed to at least improve this area I'll be happy.

Can't wait to see the reviews!

Nah, go for it. It's a great set.

No, that actually would be the smart thing to do until we get TVs with HMDI 2.1 as standard. I would avoid buying an expensive top of the line TV this year due to HDMI 2.1 coming in the very near future.

The only thing that has made me want to part with my money so far is the LG UHD Blu Ray player. Other than that, I haven't said wow at any of the new TV offerings yet. Maybe Sony will impress.

All pretty much use the same panel. B6 all the way!

If you can get the C6 for the same price (as has been the case here in the UK) and can live with the minimal curve, it is worth considering. Less lag currently, a better processor and of course 3D. One less HDMI port though.

Yeah. They've released evolution kits in the past. The TV has only one wire that plugs into it. You connect everything to smart hub.

Not a fan of the curve(seen exact models in person) but will definitely keep an eye out due to better processor. Thanks.

Samsung done, now it's time for Sony to show their cards.

QLED looks impressive. I'm on the market for a 55", so it's great that they're launching soon.

The thing that is bothering me a bit is that I have this bug in the back of my head, to wait for better tech. Better upgrades.

Was going to wait for the E7 but now I'm seeing people saying "go for the E6" and others saying "don't do it, wait for HDMI 2.1" and by the time that thing is the standard, I'm quite sure there will be "yeah but HDMI Godzillaton is on the horizon, wait a little longer" or "well you could wait another year to be sure you get the HDR69 FTW because winning". It's an endless battle of tech advancing and progressing. I'm such a weirdo that I want he newest and the most for my money, but I don't want to be constantly waiting.

When do I cut the BS and stop waiting? Is it now (6-series), this summer (7-series) or in the future (who knows..). Currently, the E6 is going for around $4.500 here, same as at Best Buy in the States. Good deal?

Currently have a 2010 model Panasonic Viera 50" plasma that will be moved to the bedroom for "bedtime movies" and OG PS4 and Xbox One S. PS4 Pro and eventually Scorpio in the living room with any chosen Godly TV... if those won't be obsolete in my storage room when I finally decide to stop waiting.

Nerves.

In my case the screen is for a dedicated media room, so curved is a dealbreaker. Don't care for 3D or need more than one HDMI port either.

Now to hunt for the best B6 deal...

LG W7 65 Inch selling for $8,000 US.

Pre-orders starting tomorrow.
