Nintendo Online will be paid on Switch after initial free trial

I am stunned thinking about how much more positive I (and I suspect a lot of people on here) would have been with the entire presentation if this paid online hadn't come to pass. It soured every following announcement and made a lot of things look very incompetent.

Says so in the link. Yeah. Stupid.

It sounds even worse when we read that cautiously:

Monthly game download
Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment System™ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month.

It is ONE Nes OR Snes game free for only ONE month.

If that subscription is not super cheap... that's gonna be way worse than PS+ and XBL, and not only because of the "free" games.

So some of those vc console games will provide online multiple integrated?
Want to see how it's been done. This is a reason to pay for online (for me)

Why, Nintendo?

They should keep multiplayer for their most popular online games free. Or else there will we a lot of disappointed kids and parents on Christmas or birthdays when they realize they need to buy a subscription to play Mario Kart online.
Because people are willing to pay for this stuff. MS started this trend. I don't blame Nintendo for following suit. The service needs to be stellar though.

I duno why some act surprised....Sony and MS making some good $$ with paid online service...It was only a matter of time Nintendo follow ....

The funny this is, as Microsoft start moving towards integrating their Xbox service moreso into Windows, and knowing how badly they faltered with Windows Live, I could genuinely see Xbox dropping online play from Xbox Live Gold in the near future. It would mean they can now tout they are the only console with free online play which I imagine is very marketable, especially when you're not currently leading in sales.

While I do think paying for any online is bullshit, MS and Sony have far better bargaining chips when it comes to charging for online. They'll actually have the next COD, the next GTA, the next Destiny.. Switch? Lmao.

And not to mention MS and Sony actually give away 2 (4 in MS case) games playable on their console every month, Nintendo is crazy if they think 1 20 year old game is even comparable to that, as good as those games may be it just doesn't compete.

Not happy with this as I feel that PSN+ is a waste of money and I feel the same with this.

Won't be paying to play on-line and I am gutted that Nintendo follow suit.

I expected to feel disappointed after hearing this.
But right now my only feelings are hate and anger... and the urge to use strong language.

Disappointing since I play a few Nintendo games online (Monster Hunter, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Smash bros, Splatoon, off the top of my head).
I'll have to wait to see how much it is but what we know so far isn't making me optimistic, seems like it'll be subpar compared to Sony and Microsoft. NES games on loan ? Voice chat via smarphone, really ?

Et tu, Nintendo?

This will fail them big time. The Wii U was the second platform for many people, will those be willing to get a Switch if they don't want another subscription?
Also, I don't think Nintendo can compete on quality of the service with the others.

If at least they have put some sort of Netflix VC under this subscription, would be ok. But looks pretty shit the way it is.

Quite disappointing Nintendo, quite disappointing. Not gonna pay for this either, especially since unlike Microsoft or even Sony, I don't trust their online infrastructure.

Paid online is basically a scam, I'm so disappointed with Nintendo taking this path. I'm ok with the rest but this is a deal breaker to me.

I'd understand if their service would be on a level of ms/sony's, but if it's a continuation of how Wii U was I'll probably just avoid getting any online games.

I think it was needed tbh, Microsoft introduced paid online a decade before Sony and look at the states of their respective networks, I don't think that's coincidence.

But games expiring after the month they're free?!

This is stupid. I thought it was bad enough that you lose PSN games if you stop paying for online, unlike the previous gen where you keep them and can redownload them after paying ends, but this is full stupid.

Wait you only get the SNES or NES game for a month to play?

Then what the fuck is the point?

Imagine all the monthly salt we'll get from the people that complain about PS+ games when the NES game of the month is Baseball Stars or something like that. They should have done new current Switch games. Service isn't launching till next fall, they should have games by then to put up for free.

Online gameplay locked, eh? Not digging it, PSN and XBL are both garbage and not worth it, so I'm having a hard time thinking Nintendo can do what they could not. Hopefully it's cheap.

So I'm hearing that the "monthly game download" will be a NES or SNES title...But you don't get to keep them, you only have them for that single month unlike PS Plus/Live where you keep them forever and can play so long as you have an active subscription.
Any indicators that's true?

That's what the wording they used would imply.

But we have no confirmation.

Maybe they worded it bad. Thinking about it again, maybe it's one Snes or NES game a month, but you can play them indefinitely after. Can't really tell though (and it's still bad imo).

Edit: If they said "for free every month" it would probably be it. But they said "free for a month". So I think it's safe to assume that indeed the game's gonna be available to play just for one month.

from the OP, which I assume is taken from a press release:

you decide what that means.

They can't be serious about letting you play the (S)NES game only for a month. They just can't. That's insane.

Sure it can. Since these are Nintendo's own games-- and since Nintendo is in need of cash-- the company's strategy is to let users try a different game per month with an option to buy it if they wish to keep playing it. Nintendo is out of the business of giving its games away, and has been that way for quite a while now. It wants something in return.

Will consumers buy in? I think the game rental will be secondary to being able to play Splatoon 2, Mario Kart, and Pokémon online. Many Switch owners will pay the sub fee.

Not gonna happen, Microsoft is making bank with Xbox Live.

This kills Splatoon 2 for me instantly and I really wanted to play it.
I wonder whose idea this was. Smells like "the competition does it so it should work" but Nintendo systems are a different context.
Not enough online multiplayer games to justify a cost and a big barrier for kids who are half the online population on these systems.

I'm still sour on this, but I'm willing to wait until they announce a price. If it's reasonable, like I'm talking sub $30 for the year, than that's ok. Otherwise I'm still hoping for it to blow up in their face

Shocking and stupid for 2 reasons.

1. Nintendo's online has always sucked. They should really prove themselves first before asking for money.

2. Nintendo's consoles have never been about online, and this one looks in line with those. Their first party stuff rarely supports it and is usually best played locally anyway. Meanwhile third party support is lacking in general.

I might've went along with the $300 price tag if it meant I could enjoy Splatoon 2 but a $60 yearly tax is asking too much given points 1 and 2, especially if you've been spoiled by Steam

Exactly. Nintendo as of late hasent been targeting the average gamer that would pay for a sub.

Only games worth while for MP is Mario Kart and Splatoon. Not enough to justify a price tag for MP. Had MP been free but a Sub would gain you free games each month IE Games With Gold/PS+ that been okay.

This makes no sense. The only difference between this and the free Wii U and 3DS online services is the 1 NES/SNES game a month, many of which I probably already have on my Wii U as VC?

Terrible. Where are the cloud saves? Where are the free indie/retail games like in Gold and Plus? How can they be offering chat with friends only through a smartphone app as a feature when my phone already is a phone and can chat with my friends using it's built in features?

I feel like this is really going to hurt them and is extremely foolish given how well stuff like MK8 and Splatoon sold on Wii U based on their online.

I wonder if they would do it like play 2 different online games per month for $3, play 4 online games for $5 a month.

With a steady stream of big online titles (fifa, cod, bf, overwatch, souls games, mobas, mmorpgs etc etc.), I can justify paying for online. I have my doubts about the switch getting that though. Also, cloud storage? And what kind of games will people be getting? NES/SNES roms or more like PS+/XBL?

Considering the console price and its accessories I don't expect this service to be cheap.

However, if people don't pay for this, then there is a chance this may become a free service.
