Switch charging time is 3 hours, non-removable battery

This system better function with a dead (or removed) battery when plugged into an outlet. Still irks me the 3DS went a step back in that regard and, unlike the DS Lite, needs a battery in the console to function when plugged into a power source.

That is what I'd be worried about. Ending up with a dead battery system if it can't continue playing from then on connected to the dock or USB-C cable.

This is how batteries work. What exactly is hard to understand about the decision? There really wasn't one.

We have been having this "dicussion" since Vita/3ds. People don't understand that lithium ion tech has stagnated. The vita at launch had 3-5 hours of battery life and a 2.5 hour charge time. Sound familiar?

4310mah is actually normal for the screen size, if not higher than compared to the average phone with the same screen size and most phones with a similar screen size are 1080p

iPhone 7 has about 1900 mAh battery and the 7+ Has about 2900 mAh. It's a pretty decent battery size.

The thing about Switch being a hybrid system means you always hear justifications that skew towards the side other than the one the discussion is about depending on how it suits the person. For instance:

1) When there is a concern about Switch's power especially for its price and year of launch, the justification is "It's a console that goes portable and the difference between it and 3DS is huge". Also implying that it's fine for it to be like that because it provides a big jump from 3DS.

2) When there is a concern about its portability such as this thread, the justification becomes something along the lines of "It was never meant to be a portable console that replaces 3DS".

I think people are looking at this in context with all the other questionable Switch decisions and the fact you could replace your DS batteries.

Tablet batteries are generally sealed within the case of the machine. They are also pretty big, occupying most of the case. Replacing them is not easy given how the insides of tablets are worked out. For example if you open an ipad it can be easy to mess up the screen if your not careful. Look at this for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnjtvMCndcw
Would you want inexperienced people to mess around in such a manner?

The charge time will be longer than the play time.

You can play while charging so non-issue. The hassle here is that you keed to carry a portable battery

no it actually is going to replace 3ds and it is going to have revisions just like 3ds

Going by the games, these aren't games designed for mobile and mobile power. Obviously they are gonna demand a lot from the battery.

Better battery life would be awesome, don't get me wrong, but I think all this was to be expected. Battery life is shit in general and something like this I expected to be, pretty much right what it is.

I'll wait for more information, but I'd guess that it could play and charge just fine, but again with the power it must demand to process these games... I dunno seems right in line.

Maybe you all have fantastic mobile devices, but all of mine, if I do anything at all taxing with them, battery and charging goes to shit. Just the nature of the beast.

Can demand amazing things from hardware, but if you expected this to have amazing battery life and be super mobile and a pure mobile device... well I dunno.

To me its always seemed clear, you play this at home, but hey if you wanna go on the train for an hour or to the park, you can do that for a bit.

Not TAKE IT ON THE 8 HOUR TRAIN RIDE!!! GONNA BE FINE!

Battery Bank? You can get them pretty cheap

A 12" retina MacBook has a 5297 mAh battery.

The PS Vita-2000 has a 2210 mAh battery.

The N3DS has a 1400mAh battery.

Not sure what you're getting at?

The macbooks cost over a grand and run very efficient skylake CPUs, and the other two examples are not powering 6.2 inch screens with games much more intensive at 720p

I'm getting at 4310 mAh is shit for what the Switchs USP is. It is not hard.

If Nintendo think 2.5 hour playtime is acceptable for something they are touting as a 'on the go' system, I think they are being deliberately disengious

The battery life of the Vita was 3-5 hours. The battery life of the 3DS was 3.5-5.5 hours. I tear through my IPad battery playing board game adaptations. I don't see what's so terrible about this.

The price in the Uk is exactly the same as the shield pro, which has the same chip in it. Mobile tech is expensive. So they price is likely the best they can do and still make a profit. Even for the non pro shield it's still 180 pounds and that's without a controller.

That its is a bad battery for the what people are expecting from the Switch and it being non-removable.

But feel free to break down the chemistry of batteries for me.

This is the song and dance I've been seeing most of today. And to be fair it's not from just one person or "one gaf" but like come on. The Switch biggest advantage is being able to shift how it is compared and discussed lol

They never tried to sell it as a portable replacement. In fact after the reveal trailer, they came out and outright said that it's a home console and shouldn't be looked at as a portable. You can take it out, but it's not the new DS, like some members want to believe.

So you're trying to tell me it's a piss-poor console (awful level of power for the price) and a piss poor handheld (awful battery life)? Why do you expect people to be happy about that?

So many concessions were made to allow this to be a portable console. The power level of the console which makes it look like a very poor value proposition compared to a PS4. The media, in cartridges, which are more expensive than discs. Low amount of internal storage as it has to be flash.

Basically it's a home console, with the added cost and drawbacks of being portable, but is actually a pretty awful portable?

This reveal has really, really bummed me out. The Switch idea is fantastic, the execution is absolutely abysmal and I don't think anyone should buy one over a PS4 or XB1 which will cost less, provide better graphics, have more games, have better online etc.

At best this is a second console, and even at that it's not very appealing given it will cost more than your main console.

this thing is a disaster

maybe the revision will be worth picking up... idk

Sorry to disappoint, but if it ends up anything like the Wii U, well...a revision will be highly unlikely.

ive been trying to stay positive today despite the barrage of terrible news, but this... this is when the tears started welling up. its almost difficult to breathe like im having a panic attack or something. i hate nintendo so goddamn much. they're ruining everything the rumors and my imagination had made up.

I'm feeling that SoC nVidia offered is.. while very reasonable price wise, as for battery life it is simply not competitive at all.

There's nothing wrong with Tegra in perf/watt, in fact it has the most powerful mobile GPU in perf/watt. But phones and tablets aren't usually running full-tilt continuously for hours like game systems are.

The problem isn't the SoC, it's the hopelessly inadequately sized battery. Your average tablet contains a battery in the 8000 mAh range. 4310 mAh is a bad joke for a product like this.

I thought one of the key benefits of USB-C was quicker power transfer?

I'll probably just end up leaving it in the cradle as a console regardless. The switch sounds like it will drain itself dead in sleep mode, like the 3DS before it.

Yea I secured a preorder at amazon simply because it's of no risk to do so. But I might just wait.

Although this shouldn't be a problem if I plan to use it as a console right?

It uses USB-C get a bettery pack. it's what i did for my Wii U game pad and what i have for my 3DS i never run out of power.

I'm on the Switch boat say one dude. But 3hrs to hit max charge is ridiculous. I can't think of a single device I own (I have quite a bit) that takes 3hrs to charge. That's ludicrous, and I'm pretty sure we can safely bet that this will go through quite a few revisions. But it seems battery tech is still at a stand still or the food shit is too expensive.

A portable charger doesn't excuse this imo. If they intended the device to be mobile then this should have at least been addressed.

Less than great battery life is definitely expected. I'll give you that. I'm not mad about the battery life.

What is indefensible is using USB 2.0 standards with USB-C. It's not a cost saving measure. The price different between the components, even when produced on a mass scale, is negligible. The difference between them however is massive. using a USB 2.0 means slower read/write speeds (in case we actually get external HDDs) and, most importantly, no quick charge. Quick charge means you could charge this thing from 0-70 in about 10 minutes.

No one on this forum was expecting the charge time to be longer than the play time and I can guarantee that no one was expecting the possibility of battery drain while charging.

I don't see how it couldn't have Quick Charge that's basically the whole point of USBC

They don't need USBC for quick charge, that is available in a standard USB connection. It's funny that the only 2016 tech on the entire device is the one thing that is completely unnecessary.

I really wanna see a teardown of this thing. Whether it's all packed in tight and they put the biggest battery they could in it, or whether its Wii U gamepad city and there's a giant gap for a larger one.

not removable? what if it dies? rip device?

that's not good at all.

Yes, this is the first time this is a problem. Not a problem with some smartphones and tablets...

The battery life makes sense when comparing to other tablets while gaming.

Ok?

A vacuum is not a game console, so I don't get the comparison. Besides, vacuums use a fuck of a lot more power than a console.

It's not a comparison. Some guys in the thread make it sound like it is unacceptable at all that the charging time is longer than usage time.

It's not a shit battery. It's one of the better batteries for a device this size. People don't seem to understand that battery tech has not evolved much over the last ten or so years. We are still using lithium ion and you can only do so much with that. Companies are currently throwing around crazy money trying to come up with something better and generally they have failed to do so.
Sorry guys but this is the best that can be done for the price. Troll all you want but that sadly that's just a fact.

I like how the responses to Nintendo's fuckups are literally "JUST BUY THIS EXTRA THING" like it somehow fixes the inherent problems with the system.

Gawd people need to calm down with these threads. Think about it, this is Nintendo's next home console. You'll be able to play their big franchise main entries on the go, in HD, and the whole thing is about the size of a WiiU controller. It's really a marvel, both technologically and industrial design wise.

It's not being touted as a handheld, and it will probably charge when you come home and put it in the dock anyway. It's a home console with mobile capabilities and it will do its job just fine for most people and use cases. Some posters here seem to have really unreasonable expectations on what they have built, try to be realistic please.
