Reading as usual. The most recent Expanse book was written a year or so before this all started and its eerie how a lot of it is helping me come to terms with whats going on now.

"I'll be dead before it affects me so who cares" is the same kind if thinking that has us in this mess with climate change.

I see your point, and it's very valid. I'm aware of what humans have accomplished over the 200 years (there was a big chart here), and a lot of people are invested in humanity.

I apologize if my remarks disparaged you. I just wanted to say the world is not for me, and I have no long-term plan. The thread should now go on without it being derailed by this point.

Democracies can be strange. It's surprising how hard it is to get rid of someone that the vast majority thinks is completely incompetent at best and at worst responsible for an extinction level event.

Hundreds of millions of people, and you can't just march in there and kick the guy out.

unfortunately the US isn't a democracy and never will be if trump & the republican party have anything to say about it

I'm just waiting for the first actual roadblock. There's gotta be something to slow the momentum. Either him attempting to do soemthing that isn't within the president's power to do (ie can he really just 'order' a wall?) where he'll get bogged down in the beurocratic details that he doesn't understand, or something that his party will actually stand up to him against.

So much fucking anxiety.

Anxiety was my constant companion anyway.

This, to put it lightly, is not helping.

My lizard brain is trying to cope with the horror by being glued to the news. It thinks that if I can capture and compartmentalize each and every snippet of news then...I don't know what. I'll be ready? Safe? I have no idea.

The march did affect him. He's an incredibly insecure man and it bothered him enough to keep bringing it up (and crowd attendance in general) over the course of the week.

Wrong. It shook him up massively and made him act like a fool in front of the world.

not in his head. to him, everybody marching is being unfair and unjust to him.

if nothing is being done to phase him or change is character, then nothing will change.

For me I can't stand to watch the news recently. Anything important is posted on GAF anyways so I get a lot of my news stories here.

Trump is as bad as everybody predicted. There's no more "wait and see." There's a truckload of bad news every day.

How are you handling it? Are you getting active and involved? Are you tuning out? Are you self-medicating? Are you pushing yourself deeper into projects/art/music?

If you think Trump is great, hey, this thread ain't for you.

Personally, I've got out and protested a couple of times, and I'm looking for ways to get more deeply involved. I've thought about starting a blog, but I don't know if that would add much at this point, unless I had a particular philosophy to organize readers around. But I'm struggling a bit, at this point.

You deal with it and move on, you make your community better, you hug your kids tighter, you help your fellow man and stand up for each other. It all starts at Home.

Pretty awful, actually.

Haven't gotten much sleep at all since the election. I feel like I'm addicted to checking my phone for updates and news and it always leaves me in a deeper hole than when I started. I want to stay active and be involved, but I honestly don't feel like it's doing any good at this point. Half the country lives in a different reality and only believe what they want to believe, regardless of evidence. You might as well be talking to yourself. No one has come up with a way to combat this and it doesn't seem like there is a solution at all to it.

I have so much more to say, but even now it feels like I'm wasting my time. The only thing that is keeping me grounded is my wife and kid. Without them, I feel like I would be a danger to myself and others. I've said it before and I'm still ashamed to say, I have genuine hate in my heart and I can't stand it.

I'm involved and hopeful. Think about this: WHEN the economy tanks (and it will) and people become unemployed in huge numbers, they will have all the free time in the world to protest and riot. Trump is going to be carried out of the White House on a rail because of the number of people he hurts, it's just about minimizing that number as best we can.

Trying to grasp it all. A lot of the information is overwhelming. I've never been one for politics, but with everything that has been going on in the last couple months and especially weeks, it makes me wish I would of paid more attention.

I want to get involved in letting my voice be heard, but I don't know where to start. And I don't want it to be on facebook or some form of social media. I saw someone posted a bunch of links to political information with contacts. Will be looking into that more.

It just makes me really depressed when I think about how the way this country has turned out to be over the last year. This isn't what I had envisioned as I got older and it's not what millions of people died for and protested for.

It is impossible to make him change his character, or his policies.

It is possible to make him feel bad. That's about all we can hope for.

- Reading "Letters from Prison" by Dietrich Boenhoffer (Lutherin, pacifist pastor executed by Nazi Germany for helping plan the assassination of Hitler)
- Having difficult conversations
- Seeing a counselor
- Not numbing myself to how awful all of this is
- Making financial plans in case I'm fired for speaking out, need to support friends/myself medically, or need to give money to non-profits
- Serving people and getting involved with community organizations

but his feeling bad does not do anything to his ego. nothing is ever ever, his fault.

so if there's no way to get through to him, i don't think there's any way to avoid the societal suffering everybody's going to get under his presidency.

I've been having suicidal thoughts recently and it's not helping.

Since I'm not even American and not wanting to be part of this shitshow, I feel suicide is more appealing by the day

Go to Gaming Side, and do other things. You can only handle stressful things so much.

Sure it's a reality escape, but you need a break from things like this or your mind just doesn't take it well. Your brain needs a break.

The other piece, however, is action. You are most assuredly not alone in how you feel. Whatever you can contribute in your state, especially if it's a swing or red state, will contribute. Hell, if you can figure out a way to talk to people who are Republican and help them see two sides of an issue, that would help EVERYONE here.

Just happy I'm in Cali surrounded by people that see how bad he is. I wish I could do something but I feel worthless. I've always felt like I had no say in anything political. My vote didn't count. What I want will never be. I just have to hope nothing in my life gets seriously fucked up because of his presidency.

Don't even go there, it's not worth it -- especially not when it's catalyzed by a POS like Trump. Either way please seek help, it's just not worth it.

This wonderful script has helped me to avoid a lot of anger/sadness/negativity for the past several weeks. It's simple to use and lets you filter out threads containing whatever words you choose to filter. You can specify whether to apply it to Gaming, Off-Topic, or both. I imagine I wouldn't even go into OT anymore if I didn't have this, so thanks to JeTmAn81 for creating it.

I'm tired and depressed. Even Trump jokes are just depressing rather than funny.

Before I enter some Trump threads, I can already predict what meme to post:

-Putin sticks his hand up Trump's ass
-Trump is angry
-Trump is a dictator
-Trump brags about himself
-Trump threatens war
-Trump hates China
-Trump hates Mexico

I'm actually finding it overwhelming now. And it's like this everyday.

The march was a worldwide show of solidarity for all the people that oppose everything he stands for. It helps to give people strength and show that they're not alone. Thats not useless. It's not just about getting through to him.

Trump is so much worse than I ever could have thought. Every day is like a fresh punch to the gut, just one after another with no end in sight. Pretty sure I'm sinking into depression, which coupled with my anxiety and social phobias makes it pretty much impossible to get out of bed anymore. I don't know how I'm going to be able to live a normal life these next four years

Honest questions: How did anyone think it wouldn't be "this bad"?

Were you buying into the "both parties are the same" bullshit, or accelerationism bullshit?

Did you not hear him praise the government's actions during Tienanmen Square?

Did you not hear him gloat about being able to get away with repeated sexual assault?

Were you not worried by his 4AM twitter rants?

None of what Trump has done since the inauguration is the slightest bit out of character or surprising.

I dealt with all of this bullshit over the last two months.

Completely agree. If you didn't vote for Hillary this is on you. This was promised verbatim by the man himself before the election. I hope everyone who voted (or didn't vote) "on principle" have learnt something by now.

Lol I felt the same (as a Canadian who follows American politics way too much) so you, unfortunately, can have the safe leverage knowing that a majority of the politics won't effect you short of a war (which I at least can understand Trump's business sense would supercede his desire to attack a country) and his business > environment mindset.

I'm an environment nut too, and well I am likely to join the Sierra club and try to contribute something to offset the poor decisions happening down south. You know that in times of war, technology might actually improve dramatically, right? I see it as an open war on the environment, and it's pushing me to figure out what I can do to help - and I'm likely not alone in my country.

Action will get your mind out of your negative thoughts. And you still got internet so you can start looking it up for where you live!

Working on self care primarily. Surrounding myself with people I can trust, figuring out my future, trying to talk to my doctor. I'm not quite in a good place yet but I'm not letting trump get to me and progressing as I originally planned. Slowly I want to get more involved with community things but I'm definitely not there yet. Still the best I've been in at least 6 years though

Agitate, educate, organize. I'm involved in some radical organizations working to fought back against this shit.

Basically, revolution now.

Went to the women's march and will try to stay engaged and involved in protests. Will write my congressmen (not that it really matters as my house reps are super liberal and already on the same page, and senators are hardcore republicans) as issues arise. Donating to charities like the National Resource Defense Council. Trying to avoid spending money with companies that are/were pro Trump when possible. Trying to avoid spending money in ways that help the rust belt morons that voted for him as well.

Otherwise, just reading and following news and politics less closely. Just enough to stay informed so I'm aware of things I need to consider protesting, writing officials about, boycotting etc., but not reading tons of articles daily like the past 8 years.

Now that I think about it, it makes me pretty glad my district kicked out most of the republicans. It gives me hope for the future of my area, if nowhere else.

It takes a lot for me to reach the state of outrage that a lot of people apparently reach from the barista getting their order wrong, let alone this shitshow... I guess I've resigned to feeling like there's nothing that can be done. The Other Side will just trumpet FAKE NEWS or LIBTARD or stuff like that and not even try to listen... so what's the point?

Idunno... I don't think I'm really 'dealing' with it at all.

I truly feel we are headed for dark times.

It is clear to me that most of the American Republican party is rotten to the core. A combination of actual evil and people enabling evil through ignorance. Anti-science, anti-woman, anti-minority, anti-LGBT, anti-environment, anti-healthcare, anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-fact, etc.. Parts of their voter-base are beyond the point of no return - completely entrenched in party line thinking no matter the consequences, conned by the toxic rhetoric of the party leaders and echo-chambers like Fox News and now Breitbart. Even if this Trump administration somehow blows over, history is bound to repeat itself with the Republican party in its current state. Republicans in congress and in states across the country will work to dismantle what is left of American democracy by implementing voter ID laws, legalizing voter intimidation and in general changing the rules in their favor. Trump getting impeached will not fix any of that.

Four years of Trump completely dismantling carbon emission regulations and preventing climate change research feels like a death penalty to the entire planet.

I don't see Trump standing up to Putin when Russia tries to start more shit. NATO and the EU will start falling apart if LePen gets elected.

I don't expect Republicans to impeach Trump and I don't expect Trump to accept the 2020 election results if he loses.

I've already decided that I don't want to put kids of my own on this world with the way things are looking right now. Though I wouldn't have had to worry about that anyway technically.

All I can really do is remind myself that I live in the Netherlands and that most of it hopefully won't directly affect me for some time ( really thankful to live in a country so supportive of LGBT ) and vote against Wilders in the elections even though I expect him to win / make big gains with anti-EU, anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, pro-Zwarte Piet rhetoric. Luckily, if he wins, he will still have to work together with other parties to get anything done, which few parties are willing to do, which in turn will likely prevent any of his more extreme ideas from getting through.

The march was a worldwide show of solidarity for all the people that oppose everything he stands for. It helps to give people strength and show that they're not alone. Thats not useless. It's not just about getting through to him.
I get that we're in this together, and it helps us empathize with one another but I just don't see how it will solve the real problem.

They haven't. They're too busy getting cheap shots in and feeling good about themselves while Trump ruins the world.

I hate them as much as Trump supporters.

You kept Republicans out of Cali so that's still a damn good thing. It is unfortunate that the Swing states really influence everything in the U.S., but if you can figure out some ideas on how to motivate Dems to vote in swing states in a grass roots sort of way, that's already a boon that can be used over the coming two years.

It's been a depressing week, but I'm just trying to hold onto there being a light at the end of this tunnel and hope that things will eventually sort themselves out. I have hope that one day in the future I can see the Republican party collapse or at least the racist, bigoted part of the party die out completely. The country cannot take much more of the back and forth politics we've been working with and I have hope eventually things will get better.

I am continuing with school, playing video games to relax and trying to further my education when it comes to topics like the economy, politics, and the world. I hope to take more of an initiative into things concerning politics and my community at some point in the future, but I pretty much need to reach financial independence before that happens.

Anybody who was saying "it might not be that bad", "wait and see" or "Hillary is just as bad" clearly wasn't paying any attention. From day 1 of his campaign, he was awful. Before he even ran, he was awful. The "wait and see" crowd are especially obnoxious. You don't fucking let someone like Trump anywhere near this kind of power, yet apparently he deserves a chance despite his awful qualities. I'm just going to "wait and see" how much worse it gets.

Anyway as an answer to the question, I've just been avoiding conversations about it. But it's hardly easy because every time you flip the news on or check the internet, some other awful thing pops up.

I'm tired and depressed. Even Trump jokes are just depressing rather than funny.

To be quite honest, they stopped being funny when he became the Republican nominee and wound up having a serious shot at the presidency. I was looking forward to him losing so we could all breathe a sigh of relief and laugh in hindsight about how ridiculous this shit was. But here we are.

I hope everyone who voted (or didn't vote) "on principle" have learnt something by now.

Considering Trump's supporters still scapegoat Hillary, her emails and that stupid pizza conspiracy theory when Trump gets called out on his bullshit, I'm gonna say nobody's learned a thing. People won't regret not voting Hillary, they'll continue to convince themselves that she's worse no matter how bad Trump gets.

Well.. if you can somehow figure out a way to unroot that Senator, that would go a looong ways. That's an ultimate grass roots campaign you and your fellow dems in your state will have to work on. At the very least, at least it seems that it's going to be a challenge with fewer obstacles than if the reps were super conservative.

I am just crossing my fingers that we don't end up a Canadian version in 2019.

I decided to reduce my intake of news media to stay sane but there is too much out there that it falls on your lap regardless. There is no escape.

I've seen more than one meme on FB saying 'Don't blame me, I wanted Bernie' or something like that. There was a fairly large group of people that were under the 'They're Both bad, How do I choose?' stance.
