Really good ad! Even got me a bit more hyped! Oh man I can not wait for this to come out.

Nice to see Nintendo aren't messing around. The ad shows off a huge game and explains the concept. I think a lot of people will be excited to have a device like this. This is what I always hoped for. I wanted a 3DS that I could take out with me then when I got home I could connect to my TV and keep playing.

I remember last time they complained ad space in the US was too expensive in an election year, so they didn't advertise Wii U so much. Wonder if that thinking influenced Switch's release date.

Yeah i don't know.
That would require a guy who knows zelda but is not hyped enough to buy it, but will be suddenly decided by those footage. I don't believe in it but who knows. At least it's not the right message for 99% of people looking at the superbowl.

Maybe somehow Nintendo thinks Zelda is soo amazing this time that it will sale console to non nintendo fans based on footage alone. But .. i think they're overestimating its appeal based on video alone.. Just look at gaf reactions in general, outside of the group of people who actually love Zelda.. "it's ugly, it's empty.."

There's a not-insignificant amount of people who don't follow gaming news online but like the hobby and are willing to spend money on it.

Zelda looks amazing, can't wait. Have to say, though, that the extended version is just so... unrealistic. No one is going to play games in 99% of those situations, and I feel like motion controls were 5 years ago. I feel like if these are the selling points they want to push, they are not speaking to a lot of people.

Commercials tend to exaggerate. But a lot of what they shown in the extended cut are nothing uncommon.

That's all well and good, but that doesn't change the fact that if you are trying to introduce your product to a wide and diverse audience you would show the ad that conveys the full array of experiences your device offers, not the ad that only showcases a single game that while great is from a series that has never broken 10 million.

That is why they are showing Zelda on the biggest stage so it could expand to a wider audience. Maybe it's Zelda's chance to break the old sales borders.

Have a look at this:

http://gonintendo.com/stories/25214...commercial-takes-1-in-youtube-s-2016-super-bo

At the time, the Pokemon Super Bowl ad last year did 18 million views on YT as of Feb 8th 2016, and cost $5 million to air.

Curious about this one and how much Nintendo paid here, and of course how it'll do in the end, and how much of an impact it'll have.

About the same they are only showing the 30 spot

Are u kidding? Zelda dominated e3 coverage last year with almost unanimous praise. It's a good ad, don't focus on Zelda, it's to show the portability of it.

It doesn't have to be Zelda, a person seeing that commercial could be sold on the concept (take your console games on the go, put your portable games on the big screen) not necessarily Zelda.

This ad is mainly just to show the core feature, its hybrid nature. They used Zelda to show that because of course they would. There will be more opportunities in the months to come to show more games and features, but for the super expensive Super Bowl this should do just fine.

compare this with the how u will play next launch ads

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-v-5qpLW9Y

i mean imagine dragons is pretty depressing, but at least there are ideas shown off in the switch ad and the product looks appealing.

Wow. I didn't remember how bad the Wii u ads were. That might be the worst commercial I've ever seen. I don't think anyone could watch that and then tell you what the Wii u even is.

On the flip side, the Switch advertising has been great. They've been knocking it out of the park.

There's a not-insignificant amount of people who don't follow gaming news online but like the hobby.

And they are not the one who buy zelda, nor a console to play it :) Except if they see something amazing maybe but again i don't think this Zelda, as amazing as it is, is a poster boy on look alone.

Maybe the reviews will sale people on it, maybe the word to mouth, but not just footage of it just like that.

And we're back to square one of the conversation. They feature the most marginal part of the Switch philosophy for the biggest exposure they got. That's stupid. As usual this nintendo product has an extremely contradictory philosophy. People don't get that. I was telling people right here for the WiiU when it was announced, and people were not seeing it.

_A console that lets you play with everyone everywhere
_A console that let's you sink deeply in your gaming hobby so you can finally never stop and not talk to anyone anymore ever.

2 really different messages here. One and the othr being linked, as in the big commercial or the UK ad, can work. But isolating the latter is actually counter-productive.

That's fine but Zelda is also in the extended ad. The Switch is far more important the success of just Zelda.

It's all-of-the-above.

Letting 50 million people know that there's a new Nintendo console and a new Zelda game coming out is not a foolish thing to do.

In my general experience, theft attempts don't go straight to shooting and stabbing. I'm lampooning the idea that people playing with their switch outside can expect to be stabbed and mugged.

just like people who use their ipads/macs outside.
life is "dangerous" who knew?

gosh you're waaaay to negative. they only have 30 seconds for this ad and it's supposed to make people interested so they search the system on the internet to get more information.

With a 30 second ad, you should focus on one game and Zelda is the best game at launch. Focusing on games which will not be available at launch would be moronic with the Superbowl ad. The ad showcases the TV and mobile use of the device and those features are the most important ones. It's nice to brag about Tabletop mode, ice cubes, local 8 player multiplayer or being able to play in the park, but what we saw is the reality for most gamers.

Even people who do not know anything about the device yet will know the most important parts: new Nintendo console, Handheld (play in your bed and in your home) and TV mode (play on the big screen), Nintendo games, launches March, 3rd.

I don't see why 1, 2, Switch! or Just Dance would better communicate what the console is about. GAF would have negatively melted down if they used that, I promise you.

Do you have any evidence for this? Zelda's a massive IP in gaming, the Triforce and other such symbols are a pervading part of "nerd" culture as a whole. You'd have a point if they were showing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Fire Emblem Warriors or something but they're not, they're showing Zelda which is as big, or bigger in terms of name recognition than most AAA IPs out there. Do you really think everyone who knows and wants a new Zelda knows that a) It's coming out on March 3rd and b) It's coming out for the Switch (or even what a Switch is)?

For the unprepared, this was confusing as fuck. How the hell are you supposed to know who won when two guys point plastic sticks at one another ? What happened ? How was it decided ?

That's a vocal minority. Zelda won the Game of E3 award and hands on impressions have been overwhelmingly positive.

Yeah, but how much of the extended trailer cut can they show in 30 seconds without messing up the messaging? That's why they focus on one aspect of the Switch, which is the hybrid aspect.

They can show the other segments of the extended cut in later commercials. Nintendo paid for the expensive ad, so it's just right that they show their biggest launch game there.

hd rumble indicates who won and lost, I believe

either way that stuff isn't in the actual super bowl ad

I wouldn't be surprised if they cut the extended cut up into multiple different ads beyond just the Zelda one. In some ways, it almost seems like that's the intent. The 1-2 Switch footage, with the fast-zooms and all, looks sort-of like a different cinematographer and crew shot it than the Zelda stuff.

Really liked the extended cut, too bad it'll be used online rather than during the Super Bowl. How many people don't skip 2-minute YouTube ads and the like when given the chance? The short version gets the basic point across well, but it focuses on the typical gamer demographic, which is good for early adopters given that Zelda will be at launch, but it's still risky given the fickleness of that audience when it comes to Nintendo.

Hopefully we eventually see more ads along the lines of the extended cut.

Guys...
I mean... come on..
You don't need me to tell you the sad truth that people interested in Zelda, and buying a console for it.. they already know about the switch right ? You know that right ?

That's not necessarily true, but please explain further. I'm not sure I understand as much as you do, Great Video Game Guru! Your knowledge is limitless and all game companies should look to you for advice!

Well, the rolling over, grabbing it off my night stand and laying in bed while playing a game pretty much defines what I expect my Nintendo Switch experience will be, for better or worse.

The point is to show the entire extended cut during the Super Bowl, not just 30 seconds. The Pokemon Super Bowl ad was 70 seconds long. Many of the big Super Bowl ads are well over a minute long. They then cut them down afterwards for normal 30 second spots for use after. Which the Zelda spot would be good for.

Heh, I imagine that's what the morning of March 3rd is going to be for me, after I stay up until 3-4 AM playing Zelda the night before.

You know you do bring up a good point. I forgot how much the days before and espicallh the day after you see a round up of commercials all over the next day, I am sure the extended will be included in those.

Good point.

More like "Oh no, it's already sold out? I have to get one somehow!".
It'll create demand.
Not sure how much, but it most definitely will.

I don't know if that really works today with games. There's too many options.

"We're sold out of Switch, but we do have a $270 PS4 and a similar game called Horizon."

It was a fine ad. I'm sure it hits their target demographic well. Teens, kids and parents with kids were clearly the focus.

Man i really hate the red/blue controller look. Glad I went with grey.
