As always, Film Crit Hulk is eloquent on the subject.

Eh, PewDiePie has apologised and for and quit using gay slurs, and this has just happened I'm not sure I'd be ready call it like this just yet*. He has shown the ability to be self-aware and grow past shit like this, I'm really hoping he sees the light here.

*
For PDP specifically, I mean, this absolutely applies elsewhere.

You honestly believe kids will watch this and become anti-Semitic? Really!?

Again this has been done before and yes it has been done for shock value before and aimed towards kids before which I know pew de pie has a young audience but he's played porn games in the past so I don't think he's geared his content directly towards them.

This was done with the intent to be funny it doesn't make pew de pie a Nazi
Celebrities shouldn't normalize this stuff, certainly not ones that target at kids.

I just don't see any grounds for that since he already made a response video and it wasn't "Hey, I'm sorry, it was an insanely stupid idea and I should have known better" but instead "THE MEDIA OVERBLOWS ANYTHING LOL IT'S JUST MY HUMOUR IDK, EVERYONE CHILL".

That's what really pissed me off. That he immediately went after "the media" and that he has been doing so over and over again. He doesn't own up to what he does but just uses an easy escapegoat like the media reporting on it, which, in the current climate, is beyond irresponsible and even dangerous.

The world doesn't work only in extremes. There isn't a button being switched from "nice" to "anti-semitic". Kids don't have to turn into Richard Spencer for Pewdiepie's actions to have consequences. What is being said here is: "Laughing at Jews for being Jews is funny, asking for their death is hilarious." You don't think that at least a few kids in school picked up on the "Death to all Jews!" line, now throwing it around, finding it hilarious? Not because they actually hate jews, but because obviously it's just a funny thing, right? It's just a joke, nobody means anything by that, why is everyone so stuck-up about it? A few anti-semitic jabs here and there are completely fine and funny!
In my opinion, that's the problem here.

I think there's the potential that his shock humour could help enforce already held beliefs, yes. Denying that seems pretty intellectually dishonest.

Didn't say it made him a nazi. In fact, if you read the thread and my other posts you'd see I've literally been saying the opposite for pages. Pay attention please.
I've been busy while posting so my apologies.

As for the Bold part people with those beliefs are already looking at far stronger content which is unfortunately out there.

He /has/ owned up to it and changed his ways before, and his new content /is/ showing a more reflective side.

Yes, the response you mention is troubling, but it could be a knee jerk. He's obviously a flawed human like the rest of us, I'm just not ready to throw him under the bus yet.

If he doesn't change up his shit over the coming weeks then sure, I'll definitely side against him.

Maybe I have too much hope in people...

Not all of them, no. I'm talking about things like young kids living in racist households who don't go looking for that kind of content but find it when watching their favourite youtube personality.

There are people like this who are not exposed to "far stronger content" that this /will/ be influencing.

He's "grown" from shouting faggot randomly to doing hilarious Nazi memes.

Maybe next he'll grow into faking a lynching. Satirically of course, always satirically.

Hes grown, he still has a long way to go. He's currently on the wire, his next steps will shows us where he lands.

I still can't fathom how this guy has 50 million subscribers.

He's hardworking and talented.

The side of him that's problematic doesn't take away from those facts.

When he's not being an idiot with his shock humour bullshit, he's also a very likeable guy imo. It would be a real shame if he turned out to be incapable of growth beyond this point, and even worse if he slid further.

I have nothing against PewDiePie. I don't watch his videos as I guess I'm a little old for them. Shame to hear that he is another alt righter, definetly changes my opinion of him.

So making jokes about millions of people who died in horrible ways in WW2 is okay?

It absolutely is OK, people like Louis CK do it everyday. But there is a point to the joke. There is a punchline. It very seldome just is "LOL, look at those jews!". Great comedians use tragedies like this and turn it into humour not targeting the victims but their perpetrators or turning it into a self-deprecating joke for playing on their own perceived ignorance.

Pewdiepie doesn't do any of that. For him, it's just "LOL, Holocaust." The End.

He /has/ owned up to it and changed his ways before, and his new content /is/ showing a more reflective side.

The "Death To All Jews" video already was part of his new content and "more reflective" side. And his new content more than once consisted of making fun of the media and berating them for criticising him, never really going beyond "Hey, it's just a joke, they are lying". I've honestly been waiting for him to use the phrase "Fake News", since that wouldn't surprise me at all at this point. I don't want to tell you to stop believing in people, all im saying is that your hope in this case is very much unfounded.

Satire is allowed to do anything.

Right person, right place, right time.

Riding the the let's plays Youtube wave, editing that appeals to the humour of his target demographic and (maybe most importantly) a rigidly consistent update schedule that's always kept.

Other Youtubers might have success, but Pewdiepie's rise is basically not repeatable. Fallout with Disney doesn't really matter anyway, he's already got his millions and his houses etc.

I don't understand why you'd waste time watching that trash anyway.

These YouTube celebrities can be pretty obnoxious when trying to come up with "hip ideas". It can delve to pretty tasteless stuff, such as this.

If people stop watching trash, then these producers will stop producing it.

Pretty bad display of humor there, so he get's what he deserved. Just find it hypocritical that if he targeted another ethnic/religious group no one would bat an eye.

This is absurd. The guy is obviously an idiot for using shock humour, but if we tally his behaviour and actions across the board Vs his use of shock humour it's very clear to see he's not a bigot.

He's just irresponsible and (even though he's definitely improving) lacking awareness where it matters.

He's absolutely not too far gone yet, and he absolutely hasn't done anything for us to lump him in with the alt-right.

We /do/ need to stand up now and call it as it is though: something dangerous that needs to be addressed. He definitely does have the potential to slip the slippery slide as Film Crit Hulk describes, but he's not falling yet.

He's on the wire. He needs to wake up now.

What's the worst christians gonna do? Forgive him?
Better stay safe than sorry, bro. Wouldn't want a Islam joke to blow up.

No one is normalizing anything, I'm pretty sure he is intending to mock and as I've said before Pew de pie has played porn games in his channel so I don't get why people say he's aiming his stuff at kids. NSFW link https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mPZvy51sMrw

Killthee

helped a brotha out on multiple separate occasions!
His YouTube Red show has now been cancelled and they're removing him from their preferred advertising program.

YouTube cancels the release of PewDiePie’s original series following Nazi controversy

PewDiePie was set to release the second season of his original series, Scare PewDiePie, a YouTube Red exclusive that the video giant paid to produce. The release of that show has now been cancelled, according to a YouTube spokesperson. PewDiePie is also being removed from the Google Preferred advertising program, which is reserved for its bigger and more marketable creators. That will have a direct hit on PewDiePie’s earnings, as the Preferred program is home to brand advertising that generates more revenue than typical YouTube advertising.

PewDiePie won’t lose his channel or his more than 50 million subscribers, and he can continue to monetize them through regular advertising
. But YouTube did remove ads from the videos that set off this uproar, and will no doubt be keeping a close eye on whatever their provocative poster boy uploads in the near future.

Then I'm sorry, but you're either deluded or being very dishonest.

The example I gave is a very clear cut case and is going to be common. There's no denying this shit has an effect.

his vr videos are amazing lol, that was from mid late 2016 i think. nowadays I watch him less because he rant too much on youtube itself. I get it tho why gaffers usually hate him

bro army will probably shrug this one off, pewds will create video around this disney thing, apology, make fun of himself , then get more subscriber(and haters), you know usual pewdiepie stuff .Dude has so many haters and how he work around the hate is why he is so loved by so many people on youtube imho

It's funny, because when Charlie Hebdo offends Muslims by satirizing Muhammad we were all in support of free speech. I don't agree with either approaches cause I simply don't find these kind of jokes funny. But the fact is: if PewDiePie had made the joke towards another group -as I mentioned earlier- I bet Disney wouldn't do a single thing and I just find that extremely hypocritical.

Charlie Hebdo is an independent publication. PDP was dropped by parent company, which is also form of free speech. He is free to continue doing what he's doing.

Apples and oranges.

78% of his audience is under 20. When I say kids, I also mean young teenagers. It is pretty clear who his audience is there, despite some of the content he puts up. Which is why it is a problem.

And yes, using these jokes is normalizing it. "Just a prank, bro" is not an excuse. He has a massive audience, it comes with some responsibility.

Good on Google for taking a stance in this. Awaiting the "censorship" complaints which are guaranteed to come in any second now...

Oh come on mate why call me deluded?

Kids are far smarter than you give them credit for if you think this affects them in the slightest.

Just because I have a different opinion to you does not make me deluded.

No, that's not how it works. you can say shocking stuff for comedy, as misguided as that may be, and not be harbouring hatred.
