Starting this August, PS Now support will be on PS4 and PC only

I can understand the tvs but the ps3 is suprising I would think people would still be using it on there in big enough numbers but the PS4 has been out for a while. The Vita is not shocking but sad either way.

That is unfortunate. I didn't have a sub but did use it a couple of times on my Vita. This cannot bode well for the service in general.

what details?

PS Now is probably flopping. I never see anyone talking about it.

I'm sure it's doing what it needs to considering the regular updates of big third party releases to the service.

Has to be due to costs. Obviously Sony has the numbers for who is utilizing the service on older devices and TVs and decided it's not worth the effort. I would imagine most people subscribed to it have a PC or PS4 anyway.

Regardless, Sony isn't dropping platforms if it made financial sense, and they decided it didn't.

I hope not. It's such a fantastic idea. But as it stands it's just too expensive for any sort of mass adoption. Plus internet speeds (at least in the States) aren't up to snuff. It just needs more time.

The speeds are there (At least in the midwest), but the real bitch is data caps.

Which at current velocity, are going to make streaming less and less viable.

Whether companies like Sony like it or not, physical consoles are here to stay as long as the ISPs go unchecked. Under current (and projected) conditions of net neutrality and ISP policies, moving to a "post-console" world of streamed games would be a very effective way to recreate the 1983 crash.

This move don't make much sense to me unless they are moving most of the work off of the servers & onto the PS4/PC.

But PS4 & PC already can play better games so PS Now seem like it would benefit the people who don't own better gaming platforms more than it would PS4 & PC owners,

hopefully they are about to make some PS Now native games that they felt would be held back by the other platforms or something.

Really kind of sucks for the people that use this service, and are paying subscription fees for said services. ;/

Nothing last forever I guess?

Only valid technical reason I can think of is they want to switch to HEVC/H.265 encoding on the video part of the stream to get better quality/lower bandwidth usage and the older devices will never support decoding that. Beyond that, just another money grab.

Would tablets or mobile work better with this format?

Ah yeah that might be it, at least in the Vita's case I believe there is a hardware decoder for h264 used for remote play which they probably use for PS Now. Seeing as how the TVs probably have built in h264 support, that would make sense. Most TVs nowadays are android based too, I think. Android app incoming?

I believe Sony will soon start to sale classic PS1 & PS3 games on the PS4. There would be great demand & stream of revenue that the discontinued devices did not bring in. E3 probably = a classics line on the PS4. Many fans would go wild with excitement if it was announced.

Money grab, many of the Bravia's on the discontinued list support those codecs for streaming 4K.

Legacy platforms eventually losing support isn't shocking news.

Nintendo killed their WiFi Connection, ruining hundreds of amazing games. Game servers close all the time.

The "financial sense" is in pushing people to ditch the PS3 and Vita for a PS4. Not that it'll make any difference, as the numbers should be negligible.

This completely defeats the purpose of the service. Fucking stupid.

It is now literally a paid backwards compatibility service.

Guess that means both PS3 & PS Vita will be retired this year and production stopped.

I wouldn't be surprised. In fact, I wouldn't even be upset as long as I could still download my games on those devices. Will PS Plus on those devices be going away this year as well? Again I wouldn't be surprised but I'd hope they'd up the PS4 allotment to 4 games a month to cushion the blow since we kinda get that anyway with all the crossplay titles.

Another good way to cushion the blow from quietly ending PS Plus support for PS3 and Vita.

Not literally, due to windows functionality, but yeah.......

Wasn't this a selling point in somepf their Tv's?

I'm prettty sure it was intended to make money on TVs rather than sell a service to console owners.
They probably hoped that they could get hotels etc to use the system too

I had this built into my 2016 Bravia and thought it was a neat idea. But when you consider someone has to go and spend $40-50 on a controller to pair to the TV to actually play the games, on top of a subscription fee, it starts to look like too high a barrier for the kinds of casual dip-in players that might be playing on a smart TV.

It's probably just cost cutting for a service that's not very successful. I don't really see the arrogance here, this is basically them admitting that the core conceit of their streaming goals (mass adoption beyond Sony hardware) is a failure.

Guess it just doesnt sell well enough on those platforms, but man Sony know how to burn bridges. Expected more from Gaikai ownership than just PS Now though...

Hmm I do wonder if they tried to expand it in a limited way to PS plus.

Possibly but forcing the consumer into a service on a product they may not want (or to abandon a product they may value) at the moment has never been a proven barometer for success. At least to my knowledge.

this got me thinking, could the PS4 Pro do software BC with PS3? i know the base model can't and the XB1 has been able to do 360 software BC even though it's slightly weaker hardware than the base PS4.

If they add PS4 games it's the death of PS4

Not really because PS4 games on PS Now would be like a demo to actually having a PS4 & if the people who try PS4 games without having a PS4 like it enough they will most likely pick up a PS4 to continue enjoying the games without PS Now.

I wonder if this means there's some big update coming out that they don't wanna bother porting to systems with low use.

Also to everyone saying they should put in PS4 games, I think Sony actually enjoys making money on selling PS4 consoles.
