Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

I'm certainly not saying the game runs like shit, in fact, it's impressive many times, but framerate dips happen and are very noticeable. I'm sure that won't be an isolated issue to just me

I wonder if this is what the Nintendo rep meant when he told IGN "your mileage may vary" when he was asked about the performance of Zelda

About what I expected Zelda to be unlocked. That's fine for me, but a bummer for some I'm sure.

At least we know power banks work, that'll help some. How big is the Switch battery?

Of course, neve denied that. Just said that reports said it's running noticeably better.

No, you said his impression were "against other reports." But that isn't necessarily known, as all that's really been said in that regard is that it runs better than the demo.

Er, the laptop I'm on right this second is at 92% and has been plugged in for several weeks. You're saying that type of thing isn't normal?.
That sounds entirely normal. Li-Ion batteries degrade rapidly when fully charged which in the case of a laptop that's always plugged in is a very bad thing, so there's probably some logic to prevent it from staying fully charged at all times.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
That left Joy-con issue sounds worrying, hopefully it can be sorted soon with a firmware update.

It's weird that it's happening now and didn't come up during the tour events, is there some trick Nintendo told their reps to setup the sync properly? lol

Glad to hear about Zelda (well assuming Engadget is correct). I can't wait to see the Digital Foundry analysis of both versions.

People are notoriously terrible at judging frame rates. That goes for both thinking they're improved and thinking they're the same. Especially if framerate issues are intermittent or not obviously terrible. Wait for technical tests.

Does anyone know if save files can be copied to the MicroSD and then pasted on another Switch so that you can share a save file with a friend?

Or in case you buy it day 1, only to find some desync issues and return it later that day but still want to keep Botw save?

I uh, may have some news for you. Zelda embargo isn't up until tomorrow so I can't specifically talk about anything about the game. But framerate dips happen, more than I'd like.

Oh no! And that's preview embargo I'm guessing?

When I played it was pretty bad, and this is from someone who can't tell 30 from 60 fps and thinks Bloodborne runs fine...

Yeah, I may have misworded that but the guy said that it's running not as good as he hoped for, while EnGadget was more positive on that matter, hence the "against other reports" part.

If the joycon problem impacts every unit and there is no software fix it will be an interesting launch.

At least I'll have my Pro controller for Zelda fun times!

Pretty much rest assured Nintendo would fix the problem.

Not sure if it's relevant but Gameblog.fr just showed screens of Zelda (ultra low quality + thumbnails).

It's probably spoiling, so click at your own risk.

Are you able to give details on the online infrastructure? Virtual console as well?

Online connectivity outside Wifi isn't coming until a patch "prior to launch" according to Nintendo. No eShop, no online, no Nintendo Account linking in our current review units.

Bright side: the Wifi with sign-in page issue? (The Switch currently can only sign into open or password-protected wifi because it has no web browser.) Nintendo confirmed the patch will have a fix for that.

"Ability to connect online using hotspots that require authentication, such as at a hotel or café. A web applet will open up so the user can sign-in or accept terms of use."

Do you also feel that the sticks and buttons being directly on top of each other makes using the joycon grip feel awkward?

The most awkward this is the shoulder buttons for me. On the Joy-Cons they're a bit too small for dual fingered use. Index fingers only, unless you're on the Pro controller.

Are you also having connectivity issue on the left joycons?

Nope.

How do you add friends?

It's under User Icon > Add Friends, but it currently doesn't work.

How speedy and efficient does the UI feel as a whole?

It's pretty quick. Capture button use is snappy as hell for example. Returning from Sleep Mode too.

But we already know that it's not every unit

For anyone who has a unit with JoyCon L sync issues, do you have a charging Grip to test? I'd love to know if the issue presents itself there.

So far it seems to be just when it's being used wirelessly.

Is the left joy-con issue only when playing with both separated in your hands or also when connected to the Switch itself or connected to the grip? Heard the guys at What' up games say they only had the issue with the separated configuration.

Not planning on buying a Switch yet so not done much looking / research

I understand the actual Switch itself charges whilst in the dock... but how do the joy con controllers charge? I think I read they charge when they are on the dock too - but surely you will be using them at that point to actually play?

My preview of the Switch is up over at USgamer.

Tons and tons of images of the system and all its accessories.

I will take any questions while I'm awake too.

Have you timed how long it is to fully charge the Switch using the AC adapter while undocked? And also charging it while docked? I'm curious as to the actual length of the charging time (said to be 3 hrs), as well as if there's time difference when charging it docked vs undocked.

Thanks in advance!

This is good news.

I mean on the Joycon grip. It's too narrow where it makes the buttons being directly on top of each other and issue.

One in each hand in unusable for me since they are so tiny.

Ah, sorry to be unclear. What I meant was, it's a problem in the grip to have them close together and so narrow but not when using them on the Switch or when having one in each hand. Theoretically, if they were usable for you one in each hand, in that format you wouldn't have the same issue as you have in the grip, right?

Can I ask if you have pretty large hands?

Cool bit from this that I hadn't been aware of: a future option to exchange update data with local users.

Seems like a weird thing, but it's an elegant solution to a problem I've encountered. Trying to play some local Smash Bros. with friends at work, they'll be updated, by my 2DS that I keep at the office isn't. This would make spontaneous multiplayer sessions have one less barrier.

Every report I've seen so far is just when they're being used wirelessly. So separated or attached to the packed-in Grip (which is still technically wireless).

As for the left joycon issue, it may be related to wifi.
I suspect the wifi chip is located on the left side of the Switch. Therefore, these desyng/lags may happen because wifi is activated and using the 2.4Ghz band, which is the same as the bluetooth band. So maybe some people didnt jave the issue either because wifi was off or connected to a 5ghz hotspot.

If anyone can try...

Great writeup! Some cool images too. Probably the most thorough I've seen so far.

Any chance you have a ballpark length of the included USB-C cable? It seems super short which concerns me.

That's what I thought, and I assume a similar thing will happen to Switches that are docked for a long period of time, though 70% is a lot lower than you'd expect.

The game worked equally well in TV and portable modes, and I never had any issues switching between them. And if you were wondering how much portable Zelda you'll be able to play at once, I've got a disappointing answer: 2.5 hours.

hmm
