Nintendo Switch Uses Friend Codes To Add Friends as primary method, others detailed

Shh. Let people be outraged and jump to conclusions.

I have the system in my hands at this moment.

Who is jumping to conclusions? Me or you?

If you have your nnid linked to your mynintendo account will those friends be suggested?
Anyway it's really idiotic to bring back friend codes, I know it's not the only way but still...

I'm afraid the "add by ID" will be reserved for the paid service.

You can't view the Add Friends page without linking your Nintendo Account.

Also, folks are bringing up Facebook and Twitter. The "Suggested Friends" message mentions those you've connected with in Miitomo and Super Mario Run. Anything else is currently speculation.

Is that such a big deal seriously?

And I mean it's normal, since you can change your Nintendo nickname as much as you want, so they need a "stable" ID that won't change.

And come on... It's adding a code, why is that such a problem? :/

To me the important thing was the fact that your wallet, games, etc, are tied to your account, and they are. Typing a god damn code to add a friend isn't a big deal.

I think the bigger issue to me is not the fact that you have to type a code out - even though that's slightly archaic - it's that friend codes symbolise a way of thinking at Nintendo that seems outdated, and it implies their online infrastructure is not modern or well thought out.

This could be wrong of course but my general concern is: if they're still using an old-ass system of adding friends, what else are they not moving forward on?

Ofc it's reserved for the paid service, they need something to sell their Online service.

To be fair though, if it's just a one time code entry which adds them as a Friend and that works across all games then it doesn't seem to be that much of a problem surely? Your just entering a code rather than the User Id, your still entering 1 thing to add the person

If it was a per game basis I would understand the frustration

Considering Nintendo is piece-mealing the system together right now, I wouldn't be surprised if this is just a legacy option and more options are added in the coming months.

But hey, we'll see.

if that is the case they probably should have released the system when it was actually ready.

“People have taken shots at us for that. The reality is, the way that online experiences have progressed, it’s an expensive proposition. The amount of servers we need to support Smash Brothers or Mario Kart — these big multiplayer games — is not a small investment. There are no friend codes within what we’re doing

I don't understand what is gained by using Friend Codes, it's just more cumbersome. Functionally it's the same as a username, but you can't choose it so even the argument that it's for protecting children doesn't hold water. It's a step backwards for seemingly no reason. Why.

It's because any given Switch owner might not have chosen a unique ID. You don't have to have a unique ID in your Nintendo Account to use it, and they wanted a way for those people to have friends too. Really they should've just shut those people off from adding friends, or at least given the rest of us a name search.

But regardless, the console itself has an ID, that's the answer to your question. It's like a MAC address.

And those other options are "Search for Local Users" and "Search for Users you've Played With". None of those are the option that's been standard on other consoles since the OG Xbox.

And, again, can someone point me to where it says you can add friends by linking your social accounts like some people have mentioned? It's not on option in those screens it's and the author of the article says you can't do that, as far as he can tell.

You can search for the last people you played with and send them a friend request on steam.

It's exactly the same number of steps as adding someone by their username. And it's not "backwards in 2017", Japanese mobile phone games use this method all the time. As does my aforementioned mobile phone, which uses an "11 digit friend code".
It's a damn console to play games, not a phone. It's still backwards as shit regardless if phone games do it.

That I could live with as I'm always on my phone but it's something the Switch itself should be capable of doing, seeing as their last system could as well

Nintendo never seems to amaze me, for better (Zelda) or for worse (Online)
Yeah, no. Fuck them if they're putting that feature behind a paywall.

I know. You will need a SD card if you want to play any ported games like Dragon Quest Heroes.

Preach.

Steam is the same (change name as much as you want) but it still allows you to search

Guess I need to post this again since there are some people who seem to have already forgotten after 2 page. Wow, how the mind slips!

YIKES. People still defending this somehow is the reason the company is so out of touch and keep making the most backwards decisions.

How...how long are the f-friend c-codes?

12-digits. Same length as the 3DS codes. It'll appear on your system as "SW-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX".

Understand. This isn't really a deal-breaker or anything, but it's an older system that Nintendo said was being phased out. The issue is one of optics. Makes it feels like they're flying blind or building as they go.

One question.

When you send a request is the other party notified? The Wii U had that. No mutual exchange needed. Same on mobile games.

That's the only thing that matters here.

I can change my name on Steam and XBL as many times as I want. Don't got no friend code on thoes.

It's a pain in my ass. If I meet someone I have to write down my code and have them wright it down if I don't have my Switch. As opposed to just telling them my username.

Yep, we finally have our day one online functionality of the Nintendo Switch and can confirm that the main way to add friends will be using Friend Codes.

It's bullshit ! Look yourselves :

* Search for Local Users > add friend from local profiles.
* Search for Users YOu've Played With > exactly like on Wii U, PS34, Xbox1&3600
* Search with Friend Code (12 digit) > fuck no.
* Sent Friend Requests > SEND FRIEND REQUESTS, NOT FRIEND CODE. Like every system even the Wii U.

In that case once you log into your Nintendo account ask the user to set an ID before continuing.

If this is the one flaw in the system, and maybe it isn't, it is annoying, but hardly terrible. Nintendo has always been a bit odd/unique with their systems, not really surprised if true.

English isn't your native language, I guess?

It say's senT. As in the requests you have sent.

Sent Friend Requests. Not Send. As in friend requests that you have sent using the Friend Code system. It lets you check the status on them or cancel them.

That says "Sent Friend Requests". "Sent", not "send". As in, you can see the requests you've sent via Friend Code. Who's blind now? lol

In theory, but it has always been more convenient to just give them a username.

Given, in an era of Discord and Blizzard Tech, we will probably see more #1234 on usernames, which is basically a hybrid form of Friend Codes.

Ah, I see. Thank you. I agree that usernames are definitely way more convenient. We really can't add by Nintendo Account username? That's so odd....

Just to be clear, do you link your My Nintendo account and Id first and then that generates a code that links to that account?

So once you've added the code, that persons NNID will show in the Friend List and that's that?

Sent Friend Request shows the Friend Requests you've sent.

Opening that page says "You have not sent any friend requests at this time."
