Horizon Zero Dawn PS4s biggest ever Sony published new IP launch in the UK

Knack, Driveclub, The Order, Bloodborne, Until Dawn, No Man's Sky, and Horizon.

Am I missing anything?

Retail only? There's TLG, Nioh, Helldivers, Bound, RIGS, Here They Lie and PSVR Worlds. A bunch of those are PSVR games though, so were obviously never going to be big sellers.

Fleshing out the melee combat and adding a co-op Dinosaur Hunter mode should be obvious innovations for the sequel.

I think the game would become too easy with co-op. They could opt for a dedicated multiplayer maps for that though, filled with much nastier (corrupted) machines compared to the single-player ones.

While I recognize that 88 is an excellent score, I actually feel that it's too low for this game (so far). I'm 10 hours in and it's a masterpiece IMO. I'm blown away by how good it is. More inline with what I'd expect to be a 91 or 92 MC. It's my second favorite game of the generation already. The Witcher 3 is #1. This is Sony's best exclusive since The Last of Us and the start of a hit franchise.

And also it eats your bag with weapons, so you have to engage with fists. And if you die, your save is deleted. PS4 should probably explode also for good measure.

you're also unable to download or purchase anything remotely related to entertainment or gaming if you die.

I agree. It's wayy too low but the game is amazing, and a score is a score. The game should sell gang busters and I love this game to tears. WIll be tough for other games to top this one.

Well deserved. It's an amazing game. The combat is tactical and intense and the story is surprisingly well done.

I hope that Horizon's smash success will lead to Monster Hunter coming back home to the ps4, as Capcom learns of a new monsterhunting space in consoles withca sales potential in the millions.

True that it's just a number, but it does make me sad that it didn't hit 90 on MC. It absolutely should have. And all the big sites gave it 9 or higher (IGN, Gamespot, Polygon, etc.)

I just had the same thought today. I usually rate other games a little bit lower than the MC score, but Horizon is higher for me than 88. The flaws are so minuscule compared to how great everything else the game does.

I'm not sure I want more melee in this. I guess the most I want is more defensive options other than rolling. So maybe a block or parry of you timed it right and you can get a 1 or 2 melee hit. But I'm not sure I want this to be monhun/souls close combat focused game.

What I want is to explore more weapon and trap options. Also more interaction with the world. Like if a robot is on water. A shock bomb or something should electrocute them too unless they're immune to the element. Also skill to allow you make huge trap like the log trap you see in hunting trial. I want to be able to make my own trap like that.

All robot ahould be mountable with ability to give simple command.

Aerial combat by riding stormbird or something similar.

Grappling hook as part of your traversal option instead of just contextually used to drop down from high places.

I would not mind more melee actually is surprisingly ok.

Single or coop bot arena as dlc would be nice.

Fight 3 Thunderjaws + 1 Stormbird at the same time.

Then add kill time leaderboards.

I think part of why the combat in horizon work is because you had to aim which part to attack using which arrow type for max damage. And it work in long range combat because you had to manually aim your attack.

I fear a melee combat wont have the same degree of precision. Enemies will have to be designed around melee combat and I'm not sure if that's going to hinder the long range combat.

It's hard to tell because they decided to compare Horizon's numbers to other PS4 games rather than Sony published games in general. So, what we know is that TLoU's numbers were between 84-116k. And this report states that Horizon outsold No Man's Sky but was below Uncharted 4. NMS sold between 103-110k and Uncharted for sold 192k. So, if it didn't outsell TLoU's opening then it's certainly close.
That's quite a range to take from. So horizon sales are 110k<x<192k?
I haven't finished the game yet but I would like to
see them visit Ban-Ur. Banuk people seem like interesting blokes

make the monster one hit kill.

*shrugs

I just think that overriding machines with more than 1 player wouldn't be that fun, is all. Or maybe they can make it like GTA Online. Same map, but different system with harder machines. Exploring the area would always be thrilling, even though you're in a group of four.

Wait, Monster Hunter games didn't sell millions on Nintendo hardware? Or are you talking about multiplatform?

I actually completely agree. I'm almost 20 hours in and it's crazy that it's not at least a 90 MC.

Congrats!

I love the way their engine renders "Shadowfall" but because I hate FPS, it wasn't until "Until Dawn" that I could truly appreciate a game made using it.

But "Horizon" goes above and beyond what "Until Dawn" did. I still want "Until Dawn"-esque game using this engine.

Gotta agree with it. Not only am I loving it, but it really seems like something most reviewers would get into much more. 88 is still pretty good and it's probably silly to quibble over what amounts to like 4 points on meta critic, but still. This thing deserves a lot!

What a huge category! Not sure why everyone is declaring this an amazing record. I love the game and am glad to see it doing well but the competition for this record is basically knack and the order.
A game selling over 110k in the UK is nice for any game.

Then selling over 110k is the factor. But being the best selling Sony PS4 released game is such a narrow category.

It's like saying Zelda is noteworthy because it's the best selling switch game when there's so many other noteworthy factors.

That doesn't make it any less true though.

Its called PR bro, you gotta make it sound even more amazing than it is.

That's my point though. It makes it sound less amazing. I hear best selling PS4 Sony released new IP and I can hardly think of anything with huge sales. It makes me lump it in with Knack, the Order and No mans sky (apparently the previous record holder). You don't want to be the game being compared to no mans sky.

I hear 110k sold first week in the U.K. and I'm impressed.

All its takes is one or two low ones to drop kick it out of 90+.

Its a difficult problem for sure. I dont know how to solve it, but there are absolutely instances where melee feels like its a must because of an awkward environment encounter or because there are a lot of enemies ganging up using their own melee. Its even more awkward because the player can only run or roll to create distance, and there is no tool to "vanish" from the dinos to create said distance (such as a smoke bomb).

Its competent, but with clear room for improvement. Im excited to see how they change it for a (hopeful!) sequel, but of course ranged combat should take the priority.

Agreed. I expected the game to be great, but it's surpassed that for sure, and I'm only 6 hours in. When it's all said and done, this'll definitely be up there as one of my favourite games so far this generation, along with Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Uncharted 4 and Ratchet and Clank. Zelda will probably join it as well.

GFK Chart Track is not a PR firm, so it's not part of their business to give you numbers to make you "impressed". Publicly they release charts and a small spiel on how titles perform relative to each other.

I'm simply astounded at this game. I can't believe I'm experiencing this level of finely tuned combat and action oriented gameplay in the most strikingly detailed open world ever created. Just absolutely awe inspiring.

Fully agree - a shame it is 'only' 88. It deserves a lot higher

Yeah I was thinking a co-op monster hunting mode would be really cool or something like ME3 Multiplayer

Was talking with a friend last night and discussed that a co-up with 4 players or even 8 in a valley battle arena with horde mode. Tackle a Thunderjaw or Tallneck or maybe even something bigger together would be awesome.
