Blaster Master Zero |OT| A Blast from the Past

At the rate this thread is moving it seems like it's the most hype Switch game that's not Zelda.

I wonder if that translates to sales. Might be doing very well for Inti Creates.

Never played Blaster Master - as a standalone thing, with zero nostalgia, is Zero worth playing?

Yes.

A bit concerned about how easy people are saying it is. So I'm just wondering if there is any replayability to this game?

Any harder modes that get unlocked or something?

Any secrets or branching levels that might encourage multiple playthrus?

Two questions. How long does this take to finish and how doable is it without a guide? I'd rather play through blind, but would rather not get stuck like I sometimes do in other metroidvanias because I dont want to take away too much time from Zelda ;)

So far it doesn't seem too challenging but I'm not super deep.

Certainly no NES Blaster Master

It can be finished easily without a guide. You get a map in each level early on that points you where you need to go

Don't think you'll need a guide or get lost much thanks to the maps.

It might be easier then the original, but its not easy.

Btw how do you access the map? cannot find it in the control settings.

I'm a little let down by it. I've played through the first two areas and the challenge is pretty much non-existent, which means the game basically plays itself. It's still somewhat diverting but without that feeling of constant danger, it's harder to overlook the bland level designs.

Also, the added story beats are about as cliche as you can get, complete with
amnesiac girl who you rescue.
I'm starting to skip over the dialogue sequences.

So is this game actually good (if you liked Gunvolt, MN9, and Gal Gun don't bother answering!) or is it yet another Inti-Creates game with nice sprite work but underwhelming gameplay and lame level design?
This is kinda what I'm wondering as well. While I respect what Inti-Creates does, their games, more times than not, often leave me feeling underwhelmed.

I've never played Mighty, Gunvolt or Gal Gun, I'm having a great fucking time! Coming from the boy who played the NES one so much I could beat the blindfolded, I feel like theres enough design updates that retain the nostalgia with enough new features that keep it fresh. I'm noticing Sophia has more or at least feels like she has more inertia vs the NES one. Not a bad thing but sometimes I'm not compensating enough on my landings. Im at Area 3 and it's great that the smaller overhead sections have reasons to venture in and explore. So far it's a pretty easy game...but that also could be a by product of me just playing the fuck out of NES Master Blaster.

Funny enough my mom was more excited about this game than I! She and I used to game a lot when I was younger (she's the only person I know whose ever beat Code Name: Viper) and I casually mentioned that Blaster Master Zero was a thing. She insisted I come over and show her right away, haha!

Based on what I've played so far, the level design is pretty great, exploration a lot of fun and mechanically it's perfect. I've been waiting for something like this for years.

For reference I loved MN9 and liked GV, but found Shovel Knight average due to meh level design.

Edit: I thought "don't bother answering" was for Gal Gun only. BUT, I love MN9 because I thought Ray gameplay was great, and the game on its own is decent, with some pretty bad levels.

Question about a power up in stage 2 :
Looks like there is an unreachable health upgrade that requires you to be able to scale walls. Is it a case that I'll just need to come back to this stage later to grab the power up or have I missed something?

Yeah I assume there's a
wall climbing power up
later in the game

This game looks amazing on the Switch's screen.

Played about 45 minutes (will wait for the Pro Controller patch before continuing). It's definitely solid, but I'm disappointed in the difficulty. A bit too easy.

I've never played the original Blaster Master. Is this worth picking up on it's own merits, or is the nostalgia kind-of required?

The stick works pretty good in this game, but I'm actually surprised at how well the directional buttons work as well. I thought this game would be a bit of chore without a proper d-pad, but the d-buttons work just fine. Should work fine for most, if not all, platformers. However, I don't see it working well at all for fighting games. Need to get that pro controller for USF2!

Anyone know where to get
wall climb
? in Area 3 right now and there's a door I need it to open. Hoping I didn't miss it.

Edit: nvm, appears I may need to backtrack.

Curious to know, does the Switch version load between side scrolling and top down portions?

I'm playing on 3DS and I kind of wish it didn't have to load...but oh well, small issue.

This game looks rad. I can't justify adding another game to my backlog at the moment with Zelda and Shovel Knight (Plague/Specter) still to go through on Switch, but I may pick this up in a week or two when Pro Controller support is patched in.

Strangely, I've noticed that I like the joycon's button d-pad when using the grip more than the Pro's d-pad for KOF 98.

Strangely, with joycons on the grip I've noticed that I like it better in KOF 98 than the Pro's d-pad.

Wow, no kidding??? I figured it would be quite frustrating. I do believe the buttons being pretty close to each other also helps. I'm thinking about downloading WH: Perfect and KoF 98 at some point, so I'll need to give it a shot.

I guess I'll echo the sentiment. Looks great, plays like a dream, really slick and clever modernization....and absolutely zero challenge. I'm saying that after getting to area 4, but if this game had serious challenge thrown in it would be a must-buy.

Grabbed it on the 3DS. It definitely sucked me back in right away, there's something about game design from those days that's still very accessible and classic fun, I love it! The presentation is sharp, and things look much better then the already very good looking OG Nintendo game.

The parallax is a nice touch, but because of added features like that it extra-bums me out that they skimped on the 3D effect. I strongly feel that Inti Creates must be given some shit for this.. if it was a political reason (I can see Nintendo not wanting their older handheld to upstage their new decide) then I would understand a little more, but I partially think it's just laziness (see Gunvolt).

Is the aspect ratio supposed to be less wide than the screen (on switch) with black borders?
Yes. This has been discussed in a recent gamasutra article.

The only minor note on this topic came from Brian Provinciano of VBlank Entertainment, who is making the open-world action game Shakedown Hawaii for the Switch. “One difference is the need to handle the old TV ‘safe area’ when in console mode, but not in handheld mode. TVs by default cut off the outer edge of the screen,” Provinciano explains. “If you don't leave extra padding, half of the score might be missing, for example. So, if you run your game identically for both, you'll notice a bit of a border in handheld mode. The alternative is to use a different camera, and use different HUD/UI placement for each.”

I'm not enjoying this much. There's no point in remaking blaster master and make it easy with a map that tells you everything and a load of busted weapons available since the beginning.
I'm not doing much, the game plays itself.

It doesn't work as well when you're in handheld mode as my thumb tended to hit the analog stick due to my hand also supporting the weight of the system. Let me know what you think!

Huh. Think I'll hold off buying and see if they make a patch that adds harder difficulty levels.

Both are cross-gen titles. Switch has no good exclusives, confirmed.
You mean you don't play video games to compete with your friends on who can milk cows best? I thought that was why they were invented in the first place, and we finally got that!

Game is definitely way way way too easy. Still OK, but when it lacks any sort of challenge there's little incentive to even go through it heh.

Anyone else getting AM2R vibes from this game? I mean that as a compliment, I loved AM2R. Reminds me of it because it's a fresh take on a familiar experience. Makes me feel like I'm experiencing Blaster Master again for the first time.

One thing that helps the game, IMO, is turning off that signal item. Part of the fun of Blaster Master is getting overwhelmed by the scope of the world.

How does the game play with the analog? I might wait to pick it up until they release a Joy-Con with a d-pad if it feels more natural. It's an exclusive, right?

It is an exclusive. There have been several people who've said that playing with the Joy-Con "D-Pad" is fine, but of course purists will disagree.
