What is a possible Microsoft answer to Horizon Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild?

Didn't somebody high up the Xbox hierarchy (Spencer maybe?) say that MS was dropping their announcement time frame from 18-24 months in advance down to 6-12 months? If so, logic would dictate that we would see a 12 month quiet period while waiting for games in the pipeline hit that 6-12 month window.

Let's see, Microsofts answer will be...

Forza 9. No maybe...

Gears 6. Or how about...

Halo 12. I've got it...

Scale... on no wait.

Nope I'm all out of sequels, although there is Crapdown 3.

How about we offer some actual thought out conversation instead of delving there?

As many posters have already pointed out. Let the first party studios work on other stuff and possibly come up with new franchises. Halo and Gears of War have had their time and its time to put them to rest for a while.

Its like Sony would have locked Guerilla Games to Killzone. Granted, Killzone did not sell or was critically acclaimed as GoW and Halo were. But allowing 343/Coalition to work on another ideas or franchises (regardless to compete against Horizon/Zelda) would be interesting.

I think Microsoft should soften their lock on 343/Coalition and let them develop freely. Gaining experiences from other genres can help freshen up thier existing franchises and may help them inject new life into their franchises.

Here's the answer:

Microsoft doesn't need to have a Horizon or Zelda, just like Nintendo doesn't need a Forza and Sony doesn't need a Mario

You're under the impression that because a dichotomy of two well received open world games came out that it's absolutely essential that all console makers have one

What it does need is a fresh new IP that reignites interest

I don't think the message being communicated here is "where's MS's well received open world game?"

The message really is: "where's Microsoft's universally acclaimed title that turns heads and offers something fresh?" Their software lineup is pretty decent all things considered, but they've yet to come out with a universally loved fresh exclusive that is a critic and consumer darling, and the XB1 has been out for 3+ years already.

I think SoD 2 has the best chance to be their 2017 "killer app" esp. if it would launch with Scorpio....would've said Cuphead to a lesser extent but I don't even know what the hell to think about that game anymore...

They haven't done that since the original Gears Of War.

That's rough when your best chance doesn't even exist.

Scalebound was a good opportunity to slowly cultivate a new IP directed towards an audience they don't currently cater for.

If the first game doesn't work but has potential, keep faith and deliver with a follow up. The faith Sony places in it's studios is outstanding and they deserve every success in this regard.

A Japanese company? Doesn't seems that great deal looking at the past.

I don't follow. Sega especially back in 2001 had the best developers in the world next to Nintendo. Their IP's alone could give MS a nice shot in the arm for exclusives and they would get a bunch of dev houses making games for them.

I hope Crackdown 3 is good. I still don't know where this love affair for the Crackdown series came from after 2 was trash.

People have a lot of fond memories of the first Crackdown, which did end up having an interesting effect on open world game design and progression.

As a game I think it was good, but nothing crazy. It was more that no one expected anything of it because of the Halo 3 beta, and it turned out to be pretty fun.

They clearly have no interest in taking on bunch of permanent studios/developers/staff to permanently support. Definitely not something like Sega that doesn't exactly produce a bunch of high impact IPs. That is why they focus on partnerships with 3rd parties to produce the majority of their games. It's easy to cut ties if it doesn't work out.

From the first game. It is that good; people still have hope.

For me, Crackdown is everything I want from GTA, but will never get because that's just not the type of game GTA is. And when Saints Row adopted super powers, it just wasn't as appealing as Crackdown imo. There's nothing like it out there.

I disagree, Crackdown 2 is anything but trash unless you are using hyperbole. Considering Crackdown 2 most vocal criticism was that it was more of the same from the first game, I would find it slightly hypocritical to lambast Crackdown 2 while being a fan of the original.

They can't really put a hold to Halo right now, they have to finish the arc with the next game which they are probably already making. As for Gears, well it just started a new story after already having a long break (Judgement didn't happen).

I do not think they need to make a game similar to the two mentioned games to "fight" against them. This is just business we are talking about here. They only need to do whatever necessary to make money. btw.. please remake Otogi.. I want it so bad...

They only have one IP that could rival and surpass Zelda.

Minecraft.

Minecraft already surpasses Zelda, but that is on every platform. I wonder if Microsoft would ever consider making a future iteration exclusive to Xbox/Windows 10 in the future. They would be leaving a TON of money on the table.

I guess Forza horizon 3 and Ori don't count?...

Jade Empire 2 would buy a scorpio for a sequel to one of of my favs new IP's to come out of the Xbox last gen, that and Lost Oddysey.

It would be too good to have either one in the current pale timeline we live in.

They should do something with Halo. Open it up, make it more like an RPG. add some mystery and exploration. linear shooter campaigns like 5 just feel so dated and boring.

This thread is an interesting discussion. Some good points were brought.

As for me, i really love the Xbox platform and i'm a multi console owner, XB1-PS4-Switch. Sadly this gen, i'm kinda disappointed with Microsoft's output in games and unique service, i'm talking stuff like "1 vs 100", summer arcade and Kinect.

The first two Xbox's, the Xbox and the 360, are some of my favorite consoles of all time. Microsoft did bring unique games, enough exclusive games and content and overall a rock solid experience in online and social.

It seems like this gen, Microsoft are still trying to find their groove. They still released some amazing games this gen, Killer Instinct, Forza Horizon, Sunset Overdrive and Gears 4... Their support for online is really better than the competition and backward compatibility is one of the best features this gen to me. I mean last gen, we had a lot of arcade games that i still love to play today and BC helps me keep my collection on current hardware which is fucking awesome. I'm playing Daytona USA on my XB1 and god damn this game is so good...

Honestly, i'm not sure Microsoft need to bring a title like Horizon or Zelda. That's not what it's all about. In my opinion, they need to differenciate themselfs from the competition in a clever way. Bring stuff that doesn't exist on other platforms. MS's strong aspect is online, then focus on bringing those unique games in a competitive addictive way, "1 vs 100" is one of those examples. They have Rare, put a team there to release some variety without a crazy budget, just some unique and different stuff. I believe Rare still got it and sadly MS don't seem to let them do whatever they want.

Anyway, hopefully Scorpio brings that hope back because the Xbox platform is really good and the potential is there. I mean after all these years, i still prefer to play with an Xbox One controller because it's still the best controller in the market right now, play on Xbox Live because it's the best online service, achievements, cloud syncs... their ecosystem is rock solid and works really well. They just need that little extra combined with a great marketing campaign and they're set.

Fingers crossed for a great E3 for MS...

Feel similar to you, it's why I criticise them as I see wasted potential there.

Nintendo just changed zeldas shirt from green to blue and everyone loved it. So maybe Ms should make Halo blue?

A rebooted Fable designed to basically be Zelda with more RPG mechanics could be something truly special.

Straight up Fable 4 would work I think. Although, without Peter Molyneux's craziness, it probably wouldn't have the same magic.

You should gave stopped at MS have less first party studios. Aim the rest elsewhere son.

So you're not interested in debating any of my points. Cool.

Maybe Halo 6 will look really good at e3 and get people fired up.
An open world Halo game that takes place on a Halo ring could be amazing. They'd have to make the ring smaller than the lore says it is, but I'm sure most fans could look past that.

And in terms of Halo 6's 4v4 gameplay, I have high hopes. Halo 5 is amazing.

A huge shake-up could be just what the series needs. I'd be down for that.

Agreed. Keep it simple (though not as simple as Fable III).

Despite my problems with the game, I enjoyed the combat in the Fable Legends beta. If they ever bring back Fable they should use the Legends combat as a base and combine it with the RPG and world building from the mainline games.

This, this, this.

Seriously, "please buy another $400 console" is not the answer to your competition's large, diverse game catalog.

Obviously MS is going to have an E3 packed with games this year. They aren't stupid; they aren't going to release an expensive console and not have multiple huge exclusives (I don't mean Scorpio exclusives, just Xbox exclusives) to support it.

These are not independent studios. They were studios created solely to make these games. People keep thinking that 343 is being held back with Halo. Without Halo, they have no real aim unlike other studios. MS needs the ideas and passion for other games first, once they get that, they can get studios to build the game for them.

I think the answer will be something we don't know yet that will be coming out together with Scorpio.

I personally don't like Horizon that much and still haven't played Zelda

Part of Microsoft's problem is that they don't have a couple boosts from the 360 days. They were able to get a bigger audience with the 360 being cheaper and coming out a year earlier than the PS3. That gave them early momentum. Also, the 360 was the place to go for the majority of multi-platform games. They had the better online infrastructure, it was easier to develop/port to their system, and they were generally the "go to" system with many franchises. When people thought of Call of Duty, the 360 came to mind. Microsoft had some great franchises, including a few new IPs that generation. However they were more successful with third parties than Sony was during the PS3 era.

This generation, Microsoft doesn't have the third party edge, nor do they have as successful exclusives that they had last gen. It doesn't help that Sony has finally started churning out their best exclusives in the last year and they show no signs of slowing down any time soon.
