Splatoon 2 Testfire Thread: This is a port...able game now

Kicked... but wow did i enjoy this a hell of a lot more than i thought I would. Still don't understand how motion controls benefit you over dual sticks. I guess its due to how much I've played Cod/Bf/Halo.

Much needed option: different control schemes for different control configurations. I don't want to go into options every time I go into handheld mode just to turn off motion controls.

Call me stupid, but how do you use grenades? I played a few rounds in quick bursts while at work and didn't take the time to figure it out. Just made due without them.

R for secondary weapon, but you need to make sure you have enough ink. For special weapon press the right stick button, once you start flashing.

The super jump without dualscreen is awkward..

I got about 15 matches in. Perfect connection. Won about 90% of the matches. Felt slower than I remembered the first splatoon, but I had to get into my squid rhythm.

Hard to believe this game is more than a few months away with this testfire and how polished it felt. I would be surprised to see it ship later than June.

I'm hoping for an exciting single player campaign. Maybe some new modes for single player/local multi.

First time player, had a pretty good time. I don't play shooters on consoles though so controls are alien to me, but getting used to them.

Also again, if you had errors try restarting your Switch (hold down power -> power options -> restart).

People would argue more precise aiming. And while I get that, it's not for me. I'm so used to analog aiming that I'm more precise with it than I am with a keyboard and mouse

So this was first experience with Splatoon.

The Roller really worries me. It might be cause I'm an unskilled noob but the Roller feels broken? It was the only weapon that I felt effective when using, and I could never beat anyone that had it when I was using other weapons. Is this just a learning curve thing or is the roller a blatant OP weapon for unskilled players?

Also any word on whether they're gonna include a single player campaign? I heard the first one had amazing bosses, and frankly a single player mode feels like the best way to acclimate with and learn the game before hopping online.

Aside from all that, it was great and can't wait to play the final game.

Back in the day the roller was king and god when all we had was the testfires, but after about a week everyone discovered that people just didn't know the counters yet

don't worry about it

Its not the sensitivity its my brain trying to use right stick for horizontal and gyro for vertical. My brain can't seem to adjust to it. I'd rather horizontal and vertical be gyro or have it work like it does in Zelda. In Zelda I still use the right stick to line up my shot but if I'm slightly off target I'll slightly tilt the controller where I need it. My brain seems to understand this no problem. But trying to get it to use 2 different input methods for horizontal and vertical just isn't registering for me.

I'm guessing as of right now its either gyro or no gyro and not a combination like zelda?

Also is there anywhere to provide feedback of the beta to the devs?
I get the feeling that you're trying too hard to aim with gyro. Its supposed to feel more natural. It definitely takes a bit too get used to.

That was quite fun! I am liking the Roller the most but I could see myself getting better at Duelies.

I hope I end up playing this more than I did the original game.

Damn, just got kicked out. Man, that was fun as hell. I'm definitely going to be buying this game when it comes out. Playing with split joy-cons is the shit, guys. So badass. This is how I wanted to play on the Wii U, but we were stuck with the damn gamepad. It's all good, though. I was kickin' ass with the split joy-con method, and this just makes me want to play CoD or Destiny or something now with this control scheme.

Matches were nice and I was only disconnected twice. Got to play quite a few matches all the way through. Won more matches than I lost so I feel good about that. And some of the Japanese players were skilled and were good at controlling the middle of the map. Will be cool playing with them in the final game. Hope it gets released sooner rather than later. So much fun.

Awww got cut off mid match!

Splat2n is so far great, need more matches in to get a real taste and form a good opinion. But now my initial impressions are very positive.

Very excited to play this more tonight :D

Played on the comfort grip with motion controls and it seems to hold up pretty well. Have a slight feeling that the WiiU gamepad felt better but maybe when I work out the sensitivity options it will be good.

Was a Roller main in the last game and the change to the jump attack is really killing me. Have to rework in my mind to use the attack then jump but it honestly feels like a big nerf to my favorite weapon. Luckily the dualies feel absolutely amazing. The roll is surprisingly pretty great and its easy to reorient yourself after doing multiple in a row.

Otherwise like the new maps, the new specials while not as explosive are still great gamechanger abilities and I don't really mind the map not being visible all the time.

This game is audio/visual cocaine once again. I've put quite a bit of time into the first game, but the button swaps alone were killing me until literally midway through things.

On another note, goddamn I love dualies. When I get a pro controller those are for sure going to be my preferred shooters. Chargers are still fucking great and I'm bad at rollers. :lol

Is there a way to turn off the annoying motion controls?

You're new to Splatoon, I guess?

Yes, you can turn them off, but you shouldn't. The game is amazing with gyro aiming, but it takes some time to learn.

Seems like some gamers these days want every game to control the same way, so they never have to leave their comfort zone and learn new skills.

Well, I didn't get to complete a single game. :| It might be my connection, though. It's been acting a bit wonky the past couple days, not sure what to do about it... Really bad timing, though.

First time playing Splatoon. The only thing, I wish I had more time before the online matches started to practice with every paint weapon first.

Got right in a few minutes before the hour officially started and I had no connection errors. And my online connection seemed pretty good.

The Japanese murdered me, and kept murdering me.

I sucked so bad. But it was still fun.

Had a blast. That was my first time playing Splatoon, skipped it on the Wii U but man I made a mistake doing that. Can't wait for the full game later this year!

Could you turn off motion controls in the testfire I couldn't figure it out. Honestly I felt like a drunk sailor half the time since I was playing in hand held mode. I tried tabletop and that was even worse with separate joy cons.

Overall I really liked splatoon 2, the changes all seem to be for the better splatduelies seem fun and the roll is cool but I can't aim worth shit with motion controls. Roller was as fun as always really like the ground pounds special.

Nooooo, it's over!

Enjoying the game, but I definitely missed the GamePad map, especially at the beginning of my session. Also wished I could remap my controls and aim up/down with the right stick while still keeping motion controls, but oh well.

Dualies are going to take some learning, but I only played two games with that weapon. It's kinda nice you can use the jetpack to get in places you normally wouldn't be able to.

The splat charger's special is also something I don't quite have the handle on yet, but dammit, I will learn it. The charger is so much fun after the initial hump, although I'm having a bit harder time hitting people with it than in the first Splatoon. Could've been because it's been so long since I've played, or then I just need to adjust the sensitivity of the motion controls. I did adapt to a certain extent towards the end of the testfire, however.

Had minor connection problems in the lobby, but had zero issues during the game itself. Well, other than some late deaths due to latency, but it's not any worse than it was in the first game.

The music isn't as good as the first game, but it's still pretty great.

Got to play for nearly 15 minutes past the hour extra.

I had some connection issues at the beginning, but none after that for the remainder of the time.

I tried playing with just the JoyCon's with and without motion control and neither way felt good for this game. After this I left motion controls off for the rest of the time.

Played it in handheld mode and it was a little bit better. The Pro Controller was definitely the best way for me to play this. Once I turned off motion controls and used the Pro Controller, I was splatting like crazy.

Really enjoyed my time with it and can't wait to play the full game.

Gyro aiming is so good. I don't know why you'd turn them off, then you'd just be stuck with the same shitty dual analog like damn near every other game.

You could turn off motion controls. I tried playing on my TV and handheld. Split joycon with motion was great on the TV, but in handheld I NEED to turn that shit off. I really, really would love an option to change controls based on configuration. Please, Nintendo!

Lazy gamers for wanting to play comfortably? That's a new one. I had no fun with gyro, I turned them off and started enjoying the game a lot more. You say it takes some time to learn but I'd rather not waster the whole hour doing that.

I think it's a learning curve kinda thing. I learned approaching from the front is suicidal and its better to either circle around and quickly finish them with splat bomb + your gun or to team up on one.

It can't be OP if people spend most of their time rolling as opposed to flicking :v

Well servers are finally down. I never got around to playing Splatoon 1, so first impressions - some things I'd like to see in the final game:

  • Got so used to it in Zelda, but ability to aim vertically on the right stick with motion control assistance instead of locking it out for horizontal only.
  • Ability to customize some controls (change jump button or motion reset for example).
  • Ability to adjust controls or loadout mid match instead of having to exit.
  • If you turn off motion controls, when using the map, it should allow you to use the left analog, not the right. Trying to stay on a moving player and pressing A at the same time can be hard.
Again, I'm sure some of this can be due to being a beta test and not sure how Splatoon 1 implemented these. Just my two cents.

That was so good. The improvements over the first game are subtle but I love the refinements and they've done an amazing job tailoring it for the Switch. Loved playing both docked and handheld, gyro controls on the Pro Controller felt amazing.

I feel way too rusty with the game. I died to rollers so much when I used to... I can't remember. And that's the problem. I miss my Splatoon 1 loadout of N-Zap 95 and Sprinkler.

Though... I didn't see any amazing spots to plant a sprinkler in these maps, either. They're very tightly designed with no useful overhangs to put stuff on.

Last game of the hour I went 5-2 with 1800p...I was worried the motion wouldn't feel the same without the game pad, but it feels great with the Joycon Grip. I think this will be the game to get me to unbox my pro controller, but so far I haven't found a game that he joycon grip can't handle.

Can't wait for millions of new Switch owners to experience this game for the first time.
