Splatoon 2 Testfire Thread: This is a port...able game now

The gyro controls were so bad for me, I was playing with a joy-con grip and it was just so awkward. I never had any issues on the Wii U, I think I'm gonna have to buy a pro controller for this game.
Also in handheld mode was even worse, I wish I knew how to turn the gyro off in handheld mode, at least it looked gorgeous on the Switch screen.
I only played two matches tho and I lost both :(

Anyone else experienced similar issues with controls?

My connection got all fussy whenever I separated the Joycons from the Switch. Couldn't find a match at all like that, but standard handheld mode was smooth like butter, one match after the other. Guessing the wireless connection with the joycons is messing with the Switch? I dunno, maybe I got one of the shitty batches.

I don't think that's a thing that can happen.

No. You can access control options in the weapon select screen to adjust the sensitivity of the gyro and stick or turn off motion control.

I get the feeling that you're trying too hard to aim with gyro. Its supposed to feel more natural. It definitely takes a bit too get used to.

I'm definitely going to keep giving it a try over the weekend. I was in handheld mode which I think also makes it difficult. The problem I seem to have is I'm still pressing up or down on the right stick and its taking me 1-3 seconds to realize I'm not aiming correctly and I'm getting killed before I can make the adjustment.

I'm just hoping they give more customization options in regards to the gyro controls b/c I would hazzard a guess that people playing against you using gyro are going to have an advantage over people not using gyro. If this is the case, if I can't get comfortable with it I might have to pass on it.

More time and info will help. But I will say it ran great, no disconnects and it looked good to me!

Never played Splatoon before. My impressions after two matches today:

- Very easy to get into
- Good controls
- Actually works as a portable shooter in bed wow
- Fast paced game
- Feels right
- Still not really familiar with the tactical purpose of squidmode other than recharging ink, couldn't move on walls and stuff...

Anyone got any map-based strategy working during the game? If so, how?

Honestly, just rush to the center and control it.

If everyone is doing their job, you're likely to win as long as you hold the center.

The amount of people I've shanked from behind because they were just looking forward is kind of ridiculous. It'll take a while for people to adjust to the speed of squid mode, I think.

First time playing Splatoon here and is pretty good. Getting used to the motion controls, turned them off for a bit but the sensitivity moving the camera with the right joystick felt off. Can't wait for tonight, was able to play around 10-15 matches and only one disconnect.

you can silently camp while in squid mode, useful when you're a sniper

That was fun. Had 10 matches, not a single drop.
Tried both the pro controller, and split j-cons. The j-cons are perfect for this kind of game. :)

How was the single player campaign on the original?

Paint the walls, and you can swim up them, squid mode is considered "liquid" so it lets you fall through gratings and other parts of maps. Your squid form is your sprint-function but also your reload button and also your scrub stealth mode so that you can camp with a shotgun like in Halo.

You can climb walls, of course you can! Just not all the walls. You're also faster and it's good for hiding and escaping

B to jump will take a while. I still have Splatoon 1 muscle memory of pressing X to jump lol.

Hopefully they'll allow re-mapping of jump button at least.

So this was first experience with Splatoon.

The Roller really worries me. It might be cause I'm an unskilled noob but the Roller feels broken? It was the only weapon that I felt effective when using, and I could never beat anyone that had it when I was using other weapons. Is this just a learning curve thing or is the roller a blatant OP weapon for unskilled players?

Also any word on whether they're gonna include a single player campaign? I heard the first one had amazing bosses, and frankly a single player mode feels like the best way to acclimate with and learn the game before hopping online.

Aside from all that, it was great and can't wait to play the final game.

I zig zagged away from one with the duallies and splatted one, and another time i just went around as a squid and splatted one.

It feels so satisfying to get a kill with the dualies when rolling.

Single player in the first game was incredibly fun and reminded me a bit of Mario Galaxy. My only real complaint was that it didn't last very long.

You should be able to climb walls that ink sticks to.

I feel way too rusty with the game. I died to rollers so much when I used to... I can't remember. And that's the problem. I miss my Splatoon 1 loadout of N-Zap 95 and Sprinkler.

Though... I didn't see any amazing spots to plant a sprinkler in these maps, either. They're very tightly designed with no useful overhangs to put stuff on.

Rollers were the easiest to kill more me. I would just blast their ass when I'd see them that way there wasn't any need to get up close to them. The guys that gave me the most trouble where splat dualies that would be hovering. I managed to take them out once, but generally if they were in the area, I didn't really try to fight them. Just run away until I got a better chance to get them.

Kicked... but wow did i enjoy this a hell of a lot more than i thought I would. Still don't understand how motion controls benefit you over dual sticks. I guess its due to how much I've played Cod/Bf/Halo.

People would argue more precise aiming. And while I get that, it's not for me. I'm so used to analog aiming that I'm more precise with it than I am with a keyboard and mouse

You need to splat the walls to move on walls.
In squid mode you can move faster and are invisible to the enemy

Had about 10 matches, all fun but i'm really bad with all the weapons apart from the roller, I find the joycon sticks too small to use for aiming but the gyro was not agreeing with me at all either like it was uncalibrated.

A lot of the walls were ones you could not ink so I hardly went up anything.

Lazy gamers for wanting to play comfortably? That's a new one. I had no fun with gyro, I turned them off and started enjoying the game a lot more. You say it takes some time to learn but I'd rather not waster the whole hour doing that.

You just proved my point. Some gamers have no desire to learn new skills, and want every game to control the same. It reminds me of how many people give up on fighting games because they often demand intense study to get special moves out or scare away from using an arcade stick because they've only used game pads before.

I mean, hey, it's a hobby, so do it how you like. But IMO some people miss out on fun experiences by avoiding temporary discomfort.

Managed to play like 10+ matches too, really solid netcode and I was playing with Japanese people with no apparent lag? That's magic.
Love the game, did the first one had any unlockables or anything? I want to sink some hours into this.

No lag with and against Japanese (or people with hiragana/katakana names)

You can climb most walls in squid form.

Stealth! You're less visible when moving in squid mode, and you're not visible at all on the map. Part of the strategy of advanced play is setting up paths that your team can use to flank the opposing team. Blaster players also like to hide in front of oncoming players, leap up at the last moment, and splat them.

You can only swim up walls that have your color ink on them. Not all walls can be inked.

You also move faster, which can help with jumping gaps.

You can swim under railings.

You can hide from and ambush the enemy team.

I guess the one downside to this testfire is that the maps they picked for it don't have as much in the way of climbable walls like the set they chose for the first one's testfires.

Either way, for the most part, yeah, this is more splatoon and better with some of the tweaks they've made thus far, so I'm happy. Only complaint I can think of is that the replacement for the stuff that was tied to the WiiU tablet in the first game are obviously not as smooth, but it's a reasonable sacrifice.

If that's the only strategy that will work during Turf War, it'll become a very boring game compared to the first.

Damnit......I only got 3 games in after coming home from work at 3:40pm and didn't get to start it up till 3:48 :(. Feels great to play Splatoon again, the Dualies felt pretty great but I'm not good with them yet, range isn't too great compared to regular Splattershots(makes sense since they're dual SMGs) but the dodge rolls are pretty fun to use :). Kept getting the controls(mainly jump and that map button) messed up since it's been awhile since I've played Splatoon. Also the motion controls doesn't feel as tight as Wii U's imo but it might just be me being rusty plus I didn't get to play in the settings since I was late into this and just wanted to play. Gonna do that the first thing when the next Testfire starts back up tonight at 11pm!

Also had a epic moment when me and a opposing player both had the Jetpack and tried shooting each other mid-air! Was intense since both of us were just dodging each others shots until we got back on the ground.....he killed me though lol.

I wasn't really feeling it in TV mode. Then I switched to portable mode and my god, it's just amazing being able to play Splatoon on a portable, it's so perfect. I'm usually a roller mainer but i'm really enjoying the dual pistols and being able to strafe so I might pick them up when the fullgame comesout.

Also minor gripe, but i'm not much of a fan of the map the first Global Testfire session had, hopefully they rotate maps in the testfire like they do in the maingame, because the original had a great variety of them.

Squidmode is all about mobility and speed. Make a path into the opponents half of the map, cause mayhem and squid your way back to your turf.
