Blade Runner 2049 Official Trailer

Nitpicks aside, I think we can all agree the music is spot on. Really blown away by how good the Vangelis callbacks sound. Definitely picking this soundtrack up when it drops.

Yeah i might. We'll see what they wind up doing. I feel like It would be a shame for them to nail the sound so well and not build the score around that. Just wouldn't make sense to me.

We've actually already got a small sample of the score thanks to a recent live performance of one of Johansson's pieces for the film ("K's Horse").

Personally, I like it.

Real talk--I've never watched Blade Runner....

Which version do I see?

Final Cut.

It doesn't really matter. Even the most different version of the movie (The theatrical) is basically 95% the exact same movie.

Final Cut is basically the Director's Cut (which wasn't a Director's Cut) which was basically the Workprint. Each of those versions had a little bit of extra spit-polish applied to it.

I think the Workprint is the best cut, but I also didn't see the Workprint until long after I'd gotten used to the Director's Cut, which I didn't see until way after I'd gotten familiar with the Theatrical, so it's hard to say whether it would have worked the same on me without all that time and familiarity. Although I had a friend who didn't like it the first time he saw it (Director's Cut) and when we sat down and watched the Workprint for a movie night, he fell in love.

Blade Runner is a movie that typically doesn't work 100% on first view. Most people I know didn't really click with it until their 2nd or 3rd view.

So really, no matter what version you watch first, you're probably gonna watch one of the others the second time.

This isn't a Star Wars thread, homer.

The theatrical version is funny as hell.

You watch the tears in the rain scene, it's so emotional and pitch perfect and then Harrison Ford channels his not giving a single fuck self from 2017.

Then you get that ending with all The Shining b-roll.

Yeah this post. I'm a Directors Cut man for life but that's the one I saw first and watched over and over. Love the work print too. Final Cut would probably be my fav if not for the changes in color grading from the DC but that's obviously a super dorky nitpick.

It's the OT section of a gaming forum. This is the place to be dorky and nitpick.

Eh, the color difference are that big of a deal to me. If I watched both versions a day apart, I probably wouldn't even realized that the color grading is different.

This movie will be better than Blade Runner. Please prepare.

Honestly I wouldn't be all that surprised if it does end up being better than the original.

The original is a visual masterpiece and has a lot of great themes to it, but the story isn't really anything super special. It's more a basic vehicle to allow Ridley to go full HAM with his imagery. And from the reports in the film industry, this film has a more nutty/'weird' plot going on that could end up being a superior narrative than the original at the very least, if done right. Plus, despite all the complaints in this thread, it's not like BR2049 is a cheap looking film at all. In fact, the shots in the trailer all seem to point to this film being one of the best looking films to come out in recent years.

That said, I have no doubt in my mind that even if it is better than the original, most folks here and elsewhere on the Internet won't realize it or admit it for at least a decade or so. Which is understandable, seeing as the original Blade Runner had an insurmountable influence on the sci-fi genre and is a top notch example of filmmaking.

Maybe for people who already don't like Blade Runner. It'll take a lot for us fanboys to get on board.
I assume it's a super hard thing to get past your own nostalgia. Blade Runner looks and feels fantastic and that will always stay that way, but this movie is going to be better. I have a very, very good feeling about my prediciton.

I'm right there with you. I think it's a tall order, but I wouldn't be surprised. I'm getting the same vibes I had when I saw the trailers for Fury Road a few years back.

It's not just nostalgia, Blade Runner sticks with me because I can hardly think of too many movies that did what it did and was as worthwhile. And it's hard to be better than the original when the best we have to go on at this point is it's evoking the original well. That's not enough to say going on promotional material, even though I've complained enough in this thread about it already.

2049's looking to be different enough that it wouldn't matter if it was better or worse than Blade Runner. It'd be a matter of choosing the one you prefer.

I don't know why we're even having this discussion, as it's a strange thing to expect. Hype is fine, but that sort of statement should be reserved to when the film is out and you've let it settle in for a bit.

Honest truth is I don't think this is even a discussion worth having at this point, because all of it really boils down to "I really like Villeneuve so i think it will be better".

It's not so much the story as how it's told. Any plotline can be boiled down to being a) basic or b) simple. There's story then there's narrative progression. While the original seems to be a little slow for some I found it engrossing. Blade Runner's visuals are indeed amazing, but it wasn't all visuals.

Man, better is and always will be subjective. And I hate those guys who always have to bring up "subjective" as a defense. I find that it's hard to gauge a movie's quality at release, so it's less about realization or admittance and more so about how it stacks up away from hype, blind nostalgia hate, etc.

I don't disagree with your points at all. I'm just saying that the plot, regardless of how well it was executed, wasn't really the main focus of the original film.

I'm just noting that that seems to be a very different case with BR2049 and all of this talk of some sort of mystery or key element to the whole story that's being talked about. And like you said, it all comes down to execution. It could totally end up being that Villeneuve messes up and the new film's plot doesn't deliver like the original film did.

That's also true!

I guess for me, I'm more open to make a bold statement like saying that BR2049 might end up being a better film than the original BR because despite how much I love that film, it's not the "end all, be all" to me. Hell, even though I know BR's probably a stronger feature overall, I personally prefer Alien as far as Ridley's top work goes.

Fair enough, bud.

Blade Runner is my favourite movie and I never wanted a sequel.
When this was announced I was extremely displeased. Like "wtf are they thinking".
But I've been following every bit of info really carefully.

I got a bit optimistic when it was announced that Dennis Villeneuve would be directing. But still...

Then the teaser came along. It looked ok but did nothing for me.

Then this trailer...

THIS.TRAILER.

DAYUM!

It shot my hype meter right through the roof. For me it looks really perfect. Exactly like a modern sequel to Blade Runner should look.
Did this movie have to be made? I'm still going with nope. But now I'm optimistic and actually looking forward to it!

"This sequel will totally be better than the original from like 30 years ago. They even shoehorned the guy from the old one in there to do some lines."

I mean I guess it's possible. The odds are against you on this bet though.

With another director I would not be this confident.

I can't believe how perfect this is turning out. Denis Villeneuve directing, Ryan Gostling starring, the soundtrack, the visuals. I'm blown away.

At first I was terrified this would ruin Villeneuve's track record and he'd be hated by "nerds" forever but now that I've seen footage, it looks just as good as anything else he's done.
