Far Cry 5: Welcome to Hope County, Montana teaser videos, full reveal May 26th

The original Far Cry wasn't open-world.

Sorry if I sound agitated that Ubisoft has dragged this franchise through the mud with their tired open-world formula. :-/

.

I recently played the original Far Cry and while its technically not a true open world game it does have pretty big environments to explore/roam around in.

When Crytek sold the series to Ubisoft it became an open world franchise. What your looking for essentially became the Crysis games.

Im intrigued - I doubt they will push this as hard as they could but this has a interesting setting

Also for the weird posters complaining about open world: Far cry has been open world since at least the second and has done open world really well.

I would argue that the original was pretty damn open and I honestly think it was essentially a open world game as far as it could go in 2004 - far cry never tried to be a linear game

Who the hell actually compares live action and CGI trailers with ingame footage and yells "downgrade"?
At least half of the internet gaming community if my guess?

Im excited though. Ive always loved this series. Ive yet to play primal though due to time constraints with gaming lately. Its sitting in my backlog and im pretty close to starting it. So im excited for that!

I hated that awful guitar at the end of the teasers lol, ruined the eeriness of the teaser clips, but I liked the teasers themselves. Looks like I'm actually quite intrigued by a Ubi game before release, something that's never happened before. I did enjoy FC3 though, and FC4 was a fine time waster too for a weekend or two.

The cultists have diep ties with the local government and law enforcement.

There - done.

IT GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP

VIDEO GAMES!

Maybe it's set pre-mobile phones/internet and telephone lines have been cut or something. Rural town no one cares about, no one is allowed to leave, no information gets out.

I guess that'd help with suspension of disbelief a bit. Oh man I hope they really do as much as they can with this setting.

jesus the guy was smacking his head against the bell....

Ok I am interested however it if CONTINUES to follow the ame damn formula as past games it may lose me

It needs shake up, but I hope they will evolve the core gameplay, not change it too much. Nothing on the market compares to FC3-4 when it comes to minute-to-minute gameplay in open world. FC5 needs to build on that, not throw it away and start from scratch.

This rings true for me too

The far cry games have a great gameplay loop, they are maybe too long for their own good which doesn't help with burn out

But I would rather play one every few years burn out and wait a few years than not have games with the far cry feel

The videos are clearly cg.

The way the one guy runs looks totally cg. Same for the grass...

Why do people keep thinking this? Is it the lighting and smooth camera that makes people think it's CG? We known that it's live action footage.

Also, bets on who the friendly faction will be? Other cops? Would kill the atmosphere, but it can't be a FC game without a friendly faction.

We would be lucky to get a Banshee tier narrative from action devs.

I mean people here want Justified tier which is a cut above even Banshee so I wanted to dial it down. Also I mentioned Banshee more for the action than anything.

The final season of Banshee was heartrendingly bad though T_T

Yea you're right, outside of the internet I love doing the same repetitive tasks 25 times in an open world game just to reveal more of the map which houses only more boring repetitive side activities.

Id rather have that than to have GTA tell me there's a bunch of stuff on the map, but we aren't going to tell you anything about them

And the one thing we will tell you about. you'll have to go through your in game phone to look at the location of where you have to go

i've only ever played 4, it was fun, but very shallow, and some of the main quests were poor. although the tiger was cool as hell.

MIssed primal as it looked like a copy and paste of 4. Hopefully this is something different.

I'm struggling to think how, considering this is continental United States of America, they avoid the fact that (presumably) a whole region in Montana has been over taken by gangs of murderous cultists (or whatever). Like, wouldn't that be quickly discovered and the military would be called in? Or something? lol

Montana is a pretty sparsely populated state, it's one of the bigger states in size but is ranked 44 in population.

To give you some perspective, California is 162,000 squate miles and Has a population of 39 million. Montana is around 142,000 square miles in size with a population of around 1 million people, that's about 7 people per square mile in theory, but in reality, you can drive miles and miles in that state and never see another soul.

I don't think something like this would be as easy to discover as you suggest.

Pretty much. I expect the actual story is going to be shit still, no matter how intriguing the premise, but I hope they nail the atmosphere.

I just don't see how they can nail the atmosphere and have it be a far cry game. The playable character is going to have too much agency and explosives on hand to ever create the kind of atmosphere I would want from a setting like this.

It would be amazing if the game was super dialled down, like pistols only for most of the game, the odd AR/Shotgun but with incredibly limited ammo.

That could be amazing.

Absolutely. It's unlikely they actually will nail it, but I'll remain optimistic.

For sure. Don't expect them to manage the nuance of those stories but the atmosphere and i'll be happy. Even that kind of vibe of you getting to Montana and all the locals are a little weird and you start to suspect something is off.

I've enjoyed all of the far cry games mechanically but the themes have never done it for me. Even the setting, whilst beautiful, is still not quite my cup of tea.

But i'm instantly excited about this!

I agree with you and Muntu. Unless they're about to change Far Cry's style even if only for a single game, I expect that this will be like Ghost Recon Wildlands with more of a single player focus, blurred into a Far Cry title set in Montana.

Yup. That's the direction I'd love for them to go. Basically how Resident Evil sort of re-imagined itself, this could be FarCry's attempt at the same. A more dialed-down approach with only pistols and occasional shotguns as you fight through crazy cults and cannibalistic maniacs.

I guess I just want a True Detective (Season 1) the game channeled into FarCry 5.

I'm kind of hoping for a more systemic experience, instead of stripping things down, I want more options. That would feel like a more natural evolution of Far Cry.

Okay, thanks for the insight. That definitely makes it a bit more believable anyway. Really liking the recent trend of spooky games set in rural environments like RE7.

Shitposting deserves a shitposting treatment.

I never get the reason of people spewing the same song in every open world topics.

I get it that some people don't like open world games, but do they have to shout it out in an open world game announcement?
I guess they just want th genre to be better. I'd personally take a tight single player over an open world by Ubi that has you meandering around collecting stuff. There's got to be a better way to fill out a world beyond collectables or really repetitive side quests.

Looks like FargoCry

And that's a good thing

I never really thought Fargo would translate well to a video game. You can get the atmosphere right, but gameplay? In a setting like this? Just seems like the map is going ot be very.... flat.

It's certainly not the direction I thought Far Cry would go in. I'll be keeping my ear to the ground on this one.

After Zelda BOTW everyone wants to have thier open world game , do not blame UBI.

This post makes absolutely 0 sense.

That's what Far Cry is supposed to be. Somewhere in there though it became just a bunch of objectives spread all over a map.

LOL u wut m8?

We need to have a little chat about "open worlds."

I am really hoping they go for that "weirdness" vibe in this Far Cry...that sense of...just a little bit off when no one is watching out there in the sticks. Could be very good.

While I'm moderately hyped for this- I'm staying apprehensive. Not only do I love the campaign portions, Far Cry has historically been amazing for multiplayer, mainly from the aspect of the Map Editor. Ubisoft handled this REALLY poorly for Far Cry 4

I detailed that fuckery in my most recent podcast because there's just way too much for text.

So for those of you who play Far Cry for co-op or multiplayer, especially back in the Far Cry Instincts, Far Cry 2 days, you might manage your expectations accordingly.

That said, if this game is pouring on the Red State , religious/cultist, doomsday prepper vibe, I'm probably all in for the single player at least. Love that kinda shit.

One million people for an entire state? That seems insanely low
