Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
If this takes over, and gets played online for the most part. The franchise will die.

I don't see it going over too well if you just cut it off from circulation.

The reason why MH got popular on portables was because it's a great LOCAL multiplayer experience.

Well, the last Portable game was 3rd and hasn't seen a new entry since the PSP died.

Meanwhile MH3 got a G expansion and then a sequel with MH4.

So your sarcasm actually backfires here :p

If you consider 4 the successor to the Portable line considering it went to 3DS, which is what any sane person would do, then yeah?

This game looks great. All 14 weapons are confirmed, which means crazy shit like charge blade transformations are still in. Combat seems intact, they were just showcasing platforming and environmental stuff, like they did with the mh4 reveal. This is mh5 baby.

Comg charts.
And ps4's sales are that far behind ps3 no?
And as long as these games sell their due, does it matter how much ps4 has sold in total?

That's not what COMG means.

PS4 and PS3 are now tracking basically 1:1, and the PS3 was not in a good place in Japan. It slowly chugged its way to 10mil+ but it was also not the lead home platform in the market, that was the Wii. All of this is a completely shitshow compared to the PS2.

When you have one major platform at over ~23 million and the other at ~5, you know which part of the market is struggling to stay alive.

In Japan, which Capcom will take care of with Switch titles.

They're not that dumb, which is why they're already starting with MHXX.

Seriously, ya'll need to watch this version of the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe-RAeDfOMM The editing and new bits show that it is very much a traditional monster hunter game. It adds on 4th gen mechanics (jumping and landing off cliffs, mounting, climbing and more)

For those who think this is a side game its not. It is being developed by the main series team (MH 1, Dos, Tri, and 4). It is the first 5th gen game.

Interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W62j4xfq_yQ

The interview confirms it and my Japanese source has as well. Capcom's main MH website advertises it as the "Next Monster Hunter Game in the series". You can even look this up on the English version of the website, not even Generations was considered the "next" in the series. The fact that they are showing a simultaneous release for the first time as a feature just spells out main series release. That being said, feel free to verify.

Also, for those who don't know, there are only 2 monster hunter development teams creating games under the main series title. The "B" team creates MH Portable and X/XX series, and will likely continue making traditional MH games in this fashion for Nintendo consoles (this is a guess). The "Main" team has made the other, main numbered titles. This is considered a main game, and since the "B" team is focusing on XX Switch Ver. atm, the Main team is the only other dev team working on this. The Frontier and Online teams are totally separate from these two. There is no 5th team, this is basically Monster Hunter 5, created by the Main development team.

Last thing: Capcom CEO Ryuzo Tsujimoto doesn't personally come out for an interview to advertise his baby if it wasn't a main series game (check the youtube link).

Wow that reminds me of the first gameplay footage we got of uncharted 4. Very dynamic and fun looking. that should have been the E3 trailer/

Unless i hear Fujioka and Takeshita, personally say on camera or in an interview that this is MH5 titled under MHW, then its a spinoff. GAF posters have claimed so manu times, "my sources 100%" confirm when it doesn't happen. Either way, Capcom is gambling MH will get some sales out West.

you sound like you're in denial. it has the mh5 team on it.

It's going to flop hard for MonHun in japan. The question is how much it can expand in the west and I frankly don't think nearly as much as they need it to.

Was going to reply saying they probably expect it too, but remembered it's Capcom.
Yeah, could be right, think if Sony/Capcom actually push it hard enough it can do great in the West, but it's a big if.

Yeah, this is the Real Monster Hunter, finally Capcon has fixed their abhorrent anomaly of having a famous IP not on the right platform.

It's ok, Nintendo babies can have their spin-off series, it's fine.

Translate it yourself then lol. I'm not lying to you, but I can tell you that it is the truth. Ryozo Tsujimoto 900% does not advertise any Capcom games except mainline Monster Hunter titles (he did not advertise Generations/X/XX, Portable 3rd, etc. only a part of a few, select interviews), and he's the CEO of Capcom, not even a producer anymore. He helped make the main series what it is today, along with the other 2 you mentioned.

Pokemon is still able to be played and is played extensively at the local level.

Great post.

But I'm pretty sure it's Kenzo Tsujimoto, not Ryuzo. I can't watch the trailer right now, did they write it Ryuzo?

Hoping we keep specials and styles from Generations. Would be a shame to lose them.

Actually I don't consider it to be the successor. Different team entirely. The successor in my eyes is MHX which Ichinose directed but even then I still find it really fascinating that the Portable name died on PSP.

What's even more fascinating is that the best selling MH game in Japan didn't get a G expansion. Absolutely fascinating.

There's no way they're expecting 5 million or even 4 million. You've got to start from the bottom. You have to crawl before you can walk. Their minimum expectation should and probably is to sell more than the localised handheld games, so 2 million in the west would be the minimum this needs to sell in order to see another entry.

That's my own assumption.

True. Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone to grow, same for companies.

This game needs to do 4-5 million the West to make up for the sales drop in Japan compared to the handheld games.

It's possible. I dunno.

Even if it started life as MH5, capcom wasn't confident enough to give it the mainline branding. I'm sorry, that makes you a spinoff.

It would make sense to renege on the name as a precautionary measure, but all this means is it's a mainline game in everything but its title, and that's a perception issue more than anything. If this is a success, "World" will be associated with "mainline."

Is it really that fascinating? Since they never used it again I always just assumed the Portable name was a play on the games being on the PSP AKA the Playstation Portable.

Nice try but a lot of people don't number their games anymore.

You dont like nintendo do you?

real and proper have become dirty words.

it's all your fault man.
tongue in cheek

Been hearing that ever since super mario 3D world came out lmao.

I don't find it especially weird the Portable name died with the Playstation Portable.

What's really sad about this post is this thread has been quite pleasant up to this point.

Perception is important when you are trying to make a good impression for a new (and old) market.

This is going to bomb in Japan and do as well as the series has been in the west.

If that turns out to be the scenario that plays out, then they fucked up.

Yeah, I was impressed by the stuff they've brought over.

Safe prediction: If the Switch gets a MH game (after XX) it will be based on this game.
Bold prediction: MH:W will become the best selling MH game.

It's fascinating to me because the "Portable" series had always dwarfed the "mainline" numbered series in sales and popularity. Like, Tri was not received well for a couple of reasons (underwater combat and small roster) yet it was the one that had a G expansion instead of Portable 3rd which had sold 5 million in Japan.

I dunno, I just find that series of events fascinating.

I think calling a MH on Switch "Monster Hunter Portable" would be pretty stupid since...it's not just a portable. But that's just me.

I simply don't like what I'm seeing out of this. It looks really off.

I don't see the controversy with the name. Monster Hunter 5 makes the game officially mainline for Japan, so makes sense to put it on a platform with the highest sale potential for the japanese market (so a handheld console). At the same time, calling a westernized game Monster Hunter 5 can hinder newcomers who have never played Monster Hunter, since they feel they have missed 4 games in the franchise. idk, what I'm getting at is, the name "Monster Hunter 5" only has any real weight for the japanese market.

Why is everyone bickering about which game is the "spinoff"? At this point it really seems like people just bring this up to downplay the importance of another console's game, or a style of gameplay they personally don't like. Like by labeling either Double Cross or World a spinoff they can try to imply it's unimportant and doomed to be a footnote of history while their favorite lives on. Both are big new entries and either style could be the standard going forward, or they could both coexist.

Not really feeling it at all, but a PC version ensures I'll at least check it out at some point. For now the only MH I'm actually looking forward to is the Switch one.

FUCKING ELATED TO HEAR ALL OF THIS!

thank you! :)

I'm officially on board the hype train now

True. Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone to grow, same for companies.

It is also made by one of the most constant teams sales-wise in Capcom, also the son of the CEO, so they probably have some leverage in case the game sells below expectations. The important thing is going to be how Capcom markets the title in the West. I do not think all the new things they showed in the trailer helped in that regard, they should focus more in the combat and the team work.
