Yeah I see and makes sense.
At the same time however, it also goes to show why Sony isn't keen. Want more players to play with in your region? - then entice them to buy a Ps4.
You are telling that PlayStation isn't appealing to people so we should convince them?
We are not convincing people in here to have cross-play. How can we convince people to buy another platform?

I would like to sell my Pro and buy a XB O X. But all my friends are on PS4, so I won't so it. If Sony allowed crossplay for most games, I would change sides to MS at once.
That's not convincing people who have other platform to buy a PlayStation. That's holding you hostage.
I had to buy an Xbox 360 because my friends all bought it. Later I bought a PS3 but played by myself. All multiplayer/multiplataform games where in my 360.
You see the pattern in here?
If Sony loses the lead, and my friends buy and Xbox, I would have to buy it too... I don't want that.
This is not good. I love PlayStation and always tend to their side because of their exclusives, but I won't support a "hostage" situation because they are the leader.
It's different been welcomed than been "forced" to stay.
Companies should focus on gaining people over, instead of forcing them. Even more when every other competitor is doing what they aren't.

Even if cross-play was in place the incentive will still be minimal because In game party/invite is something that needs system/network level integration to work and having something like that in place that makes some there is less reliance on your seamless system doesn't feel something any of the three manufactures would work on.That was more an indication of the willing. Meaning without cross play, there's far less incentive to try and make a solution. If we get over this hill, then maybe a few more doors open

Indeed that would fix voice/chat but invite/in-game party will still be an issue sadly.
Yh a third party is the only way this issue will be truly resolved(In a seamless manner). Still that would mean it's an additional service some devs would not want to use or can't afford it.

I fully support this in every way and really don't see a downside for the parties involved. Hoping Sony comes around because it'd be a huge bummer for the console with the largest marketshare to be the one that avoids this.

This won't be true for games like Rocket League. You won't be partying up with friends from psn or steam. Just get matched up with them randomly when playing.
For Minecraft however this may happen but not for the reason you listed. That community will for sure know that the PS4 version is gimped and there will be other versions of the game that offer far more. It can actually hurt Sony by not getting Minecraft cross play.

Doesn't crossplay exist with PS4 and PC in a few games already? This seems like a useless fight if it's trying to get Sony to greenlight crossplay with Xbox. Leave it alone, these are fiercely competitive brands, cooperation is not expected or required.
Or maybe don't leave it alone, kick up a fuss and help change the status quo for all our betterment?

"the big three" has always referred to sony, mS and nintendo and 2 out of the 3 fiercely competitive brands are cooperating, so having the third cooperate is an expectation and the lack thereof is a disappointment
That was the moment, when it was announced that the Switch was part of this. For all the things that Nintendo has gotten wrong with online functionality, you'd expect them to be the absolute last supporters of crossplay. Unification across all platforms is so close. Rocket League with literally all of my friends? Sign me up.
I wonder if microsoft after seeing that for once is getting positive pr in an issue with sony will try to push for even more games that have crossplaybetween its console' the switch, pc, and mobile

I'm cut off from friends that do. I actually play on PC myself. Why's that?
And friends that play Rocket League. And friends that play countless other games that the gap could be so easily bridged for.

Can you name any other product or service space where cooperation isn't expected? Could you imagine car manufacturers requiring you to only use their gas? Mobile phones that only let you call people on that network?
You are right about Rocket League. I play it and wish it could feature a better cross-play environment. I have friends on PC and wish I could play with them.
That is on the developer. I keep asking them for this kind of implementation, because, well... I can team up with a PC player if he is a random, but can't make a party with.
The case for PlayStation is not even allowing the fault be on the dev. Why should devs even bother when platform holders don't?
I wish cross-play becomes mandatory.
Resuming my point, both are in the wrong and none make the other excusable.
Thing is if this caught on and Sony got on board you would never have to buy another system other than a PS4. All of your friends could get a Xbox 2 but you'd still be able to play with them on your PS5.

Sony is only hurting themselves, not only with coming across anit-consumer, but the potential of more sales.
If games on the X1X look on par or barley better than PS4 Pro. I'd upgrade to the Pro from my X1 and still play with my friends on X1 if games like COD and Battlefront 2 offered crossplay. Sony should be pushing for all games to have cross play.

Don't expect crossplay with PS and Xbox. Request and inquire on crossplay between PS and PC on a developer by developer basis. Seems simple and less agonizing to me.
Why settle? Get everyone on board and then everyone can play together.

Nah, myself, my wife and my one son play minecraft on PS4, my other son plays it on PC. My friend won an Xbox from a box of cereal (seriously) and his daughter plays on mobile. My son's friend got an Xbox because of backward compatibility.
It would be awesome if we could build a world together.
To know this is not only possible, but being blocked by some tool at Sony makes me angry.

the only such players are those on PC and sony already allows that cross play. console players would have the same input and output restrictions no matter what console they're on

I see the problem for platform holders. They want to lock your wallet with them. I understand that, but I, as a consumer, don't want that.
It's only a good move for them, now. Maybe not in the future.

Not true. There's some ps3/vita/mobile. Crossplay too.

Sony should work a way to do it.
But for example I dont wait PC players on Dark Souls or Overwatch.
It works...for some games and for some genres, for others just don't.
I commend Sony on their decision... They are absolutely right.. Sony has a job to protect its userbase. It comes down to the grey area of online liabilities, and as a company and a platform they must protect their own. This is the correct decision.. no matter how many butt hurt fans say otherwise.. Sony way to go!!
