Orioto art thread - New VG wall every thursday!

Well if you like artprints! There is a framed option to which gives me more money but it's expensive :p

As for the type of print i personally don't like my art in matte (not shiny), but the best paper quality they offer is art print (which is matte). That said posters or phot prints are good quality to (and more shiny with more contrast)
I think I will frame it by myself, it´s a bit too expensive and shipping to germany is also very high.

But thanks for the advice, I will go for the photoprint then.
Especially this artpiece with dark colorscheme needs a high contrast. :)

Yes definitely, the darker my art is, the more it needs a shiny finish

As personal experiment i wanted to create an hd, detailled version of FFVI chibi style.

I stopped posting here because I didn't have much to add except "amazing as always" (and I take this chance to say just that, everything is breathtaking), but I had to comment on the lovely humour of this one, particularly Joffrey and Ned's jobs. :D

Also a minor detail, Throne is spelled "Trhone" on Tywin's job. I wanted to point that out ASAP in case you were going to make prints of them.

Ha, thx for that i'll fix it!
It's far from being finished, there are room for 42 characters. But i'm not sure i'll have the motivation to finish it anyway

Some of these got characters are pretty damn funny !

Thx!
Without you and some others that thread would only be me talking with myself.

My god if i had to gauge the interest for what i do on gaf only in the last 10 years i would have stopped a long time ago. I'm constantly feeling like shit here. That's what gaf has always made me feel.

hey, keep up the good work. I still follow this thread and read every reply.
Like someone else already wrote, I just don't wan to reply with the same 'nice work' every time, feels odd to me.

But when I'm home next week I'm gonna buy the SMW map. That one's nice ;)

Yea I'm kind of surprised by the lack of comments, myself to blame as well. I've followed your stuff for a long time and your skill set has just improved so dang much. Keep it up man, regardless if people comment I guarantee people are loving seeing these. The game of thrones characters are incredible. You should pitch it to some mobile game developers or something. Would love to see your art style in a game.

That' nice and you're one of the guys posting to.
People say that everywhere on internet, except when you post videogame art every week on a board with dozen of thousands of users, and you got an average of 1 comment, that tells you how nobody gives a shit. You can say every nice thing you want, but that's the hard fact.

Based on gaf reaction i'm a useless nuisance

thx but that's not enough to pop up when i beg. And i don't need people to come and say how much i'm great and this and that. It can be just talking about the games depicted for example, it can be anything..

It's like no gamer read the thread anymore. Here i said the next one will be earthbound. Nobody gives a shit. I did lufia before, nobody gave a shit. Do you guys have a lot of lufia art or posters done in general ? Or Banjo ?

Is gaf a bunch a millennial who only play call of ? I wonder sometimes.
I'm just doing that in the background and i'm like a plant on the ground. Everyone is used to it and it's not really needed.

Do you realize i'm in the situation of a guy who beg for money in the metro and is like "at least give me a smile". Cause that's basically the equivalent here. Not everyone will give me money, or buy stuff, but at least make me feel i'm not invisible.

The lack of comments is definitely a hassle. I love seeing these, and I'm totally up to comment if I see something from a game I particularly love (I'm just now seeing the Banjo one! Great stuff! Excited for EarthBound too!) but I only ever see it if the topic shows up near the first few pages while I'm browsing. =\

Agreed, I've reached out to you on PM and told you that you inspired me to learn how to draw and asked what tools that you use. I've shown my wife and kids your stuff. To say that I'm impressed with your work is an understatement. I and many others are in awe everytime we venture into this thread. Please keep up the amazing work.

I guess you meant obsessed for Brienne?

The main issue I think is that GAF is an increadibly fast moving gaming forum and if a thread isn't on the first two or so pages constantly, it basically lives off subscribers that occasionally bump it, like in this case. So you obviously need more people posting in here, as you already observed, to keep it up. You post your newest artwork, and maybe a few people post that they like it and want to buy it, but that's it. You said you expect people to discuss the games of the artworks you post, but I don't think it's reasonable to expect discussion to appear by itself. You have to actively ignite it. Maybe you could try to add some questions when you post a new artwork. Stuff like "What's your favorite memory of this game?" or whatever else could possibly start a discussion.

Maybe you could also ask a mod to change the thread title to something more catchy that maybe gets random people to click on it when it gets bumped to the front page. At least something like "Orioto - New gaming art every week! Now: Game X, Game Y" to communicate that there is new content posted regularly and it's not just some super long thread with endless discussions about some random thing. I know I'm certainly not interested in clicking on those.

Also, always keep your OP up to date. The thread title says Arkham Knight and Super Mario World but I don't see either of them at the top of the OP. If people click on the thread because they are interested in one of those and they don't immediately see it, the chance that you've already lost them is pretty high. Don't expect people to start scrolling through the last few posts to find the latest artwork.

I'm subscribed to the thread and read every post, I've even got 4 of your artworks on my wall. I just don't feel the need to post a 'Nice :)' every time.

If that's not enough for you then too bad I guess?

Yeah that's the problem. I often get one or zero comment and the thread is gone in 20 seconds.

The title is changing every 2 weeks to reflect the games. At least fans of the game should be attracted when they see the name in the thread, you would think.. I'm not going to put a super long title "hookers and coke inside!"

I also tried many times to have gaf more invested by asking things about the game i was about to paint etc.. But i always have to beg to have an answer.
For the op yeah maybe you're right i don't know, i don't really think about changing it cause in my mind i always go the the end of a long thread, not the beginning.

I'm subscribed to the thread and read every post, I've even got 4 of your artworks on my wall. I just don't feel the need to post a 'Nice :)' every time.

Anyway you have to realize it's important for an artist like me to have feedback from the net. See, the got poster. It's taking me so much time, it'll be around 84 hours in the end. I can't really afford the time if i'm not going to make some money of it. From the reaction here, i'm not sure it's worthy to finish it. And from gaf reaction in general i would have never finished anything honestly.

So this week it's the patreon random commission thingy and the guy chose Bioshock Infinite lol. That's a little worrying i hope i don't end doing the same games all the time cause of patreon!
On top of Spiral Mountain, there is no jiggy in Banjo-Kazooie, but in the announcement trailer for Nuts / Bolts, where it was not know it was going to be a damn Lego game, there was a Jiggy on top of Spiral Mountain, just like in your image:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLWLdO9GLWM

Regarding the lack of comments:
I always look into the thread when it comes up, but it is up so seldomly and then I feel it would be inappropiate to comment on older work, when you probably prefer discussion about newer ones. E.g., this time, I came in to look for the Super Mario World one, before it was Banjo. But I, as many else, are obviously not interested in every franchise represented, e.g. I couldn't care less about Earthbound. Your work still is very impressive, but I enjoy images of games I like more.

Haha sorry, I think it was mainly this post that upset me:

Just sounded like you were telling your fans they're not good enough.

I'm talking to gaffers about gaffers specifically. And i don't know when people from here buy posters i have no infos about buyers. It could be a case of everyone so busy to buy posters and following me elsewhere that they stopped bothering with that thread, sure..

But that thread has been my direct connection to people and my kinda blog where i whine and talk about my life, more than elsewhere, and for veryyy long. So it affects me when it's dead yeah.

Anyway i've updated the op with the last 3 pieces. Maybe i'll add (see op) to the thread title

Dude, you're not the only artist here. People love your art, that's clear, but it's ridiculous to think that a lack of replies makes you a nuisance. I've put hours of work into threads that went unnoticed and I don't complain about it. The site is nice enough to let you have an avenue for your art and it does get you sales and wider notice. Appreciate it.

Sure i'm sorry to be such an horrible human garbage. i'll shut up humbly then.
It's so difficult to comment on internet, it takes time and lots of thought i guess, and you're right, people should shut up and accept it when nobody shows any sign of interest. Complaining about it is a fucking shame. I mean you've been dedicating the biggest part of your adult life to do something for a community, and what, you're asking for people to say something ?? That's ridiculous right.

Artists should accept that most people won't even give them a polite eye contact and die in silence with humility i guess.

The truth is internet is full of people thinking things exists like some sort of given object and don't need any cheers or resources to exist. Sorry to not shut up about it, and to beg and complain. That's not only MY problem by the way, that's a general problem on internet, and people have the right to be pissed about silent crowds and say something about it.

This has been my blog for almost 10 years actually yeah. Sorry if i see it that way and it's not fitting. I've started to build a community here and i talked about all my problems and shared with people here. It's the only place on the net where i talk about that.

Maybe i'm seeing gaf a little more personally and sensitively than i should i guess.

Actually it seems you see that thread as some sort of cold promotional thing. But indeed, i think it would be inappropriate on gaf, to have just an auto-promo thread like that. The thread has been way more for years.

Look, I like your art, but it's not the first time you've been complaining here, and frankly it comes across as petty. I don't see the other artists here acting that way. Your contributions are valued, there's no need to feel unwanted because they go unvoiced.

Wow, I missed quite a few pieces since the last time I checked, lots of games I love too.
Love the Bioshock and FFIX pieces in particular.

I know we've had this discussion before Orioto but I would really like to see you try something more character focused once in a while instead of always focusing on the background with tiny characters.
I know you're going to say that this is your style (and you're incredible at it) but it would be cool imo.

Thx!
I'm not good at characters really, believe me, you wouldn't like it! That's my style cause that's what i can do! Not every artist can do every style :) And my got art is character oriented actually, but with a style that fits me.

ff9 and bioshock are games I really dislike, but this isn't the thread to express my grievances so I just didnt post when you released them. I love the designs of them but I just have no attachment to the games.

That said, you're definitely one of my favorite creators. I buy posters from Mondo and the like, but I find your stuff to be my favorite video game focused content I've found and I like it enough to put alongside that other stuff

Just bought posters for Horizon, Uncharted, and Journey. So incredibly beautiful. :)

I found this thread unintentionally a couple months ago through a Google search, rather than seeing it on Neogaf itself (even though I have visited this site probably daily for the last 10 years.) I've been following it ever since. I don't think Neogaf is the best way to get exposure for a project due to how quickly it moves. Getting more people to like and share your Facebook/instagram posts is probably more effective. I also wonder if you made a formal website for your work if that would help things, from which you display samples of your all your work and link to your other accounts (RedBubble, Patrion, Facebook, instagram, Twitter, even this neogaf thread, etc). I mean, if you were to write up a resume, what site would you direct your future employers to that summarizes all of your work? Although I may just be old fashioned -- maybe a formal website isn't necessary anymore. Anyways, I love your work. Keep it up.

I'm looking forward to Mario RPG. Wondering what it's gonna look like.

And I'm sorry you're feeling discouraged. You have amazing artistic talent. But it really is hard to keep a thread like this up when there's so much gaming news going on constantly.

I really hope that things pick up and you are successful with this. This is something you like to do. People would love to be paid to do what they like to do. I'm currently in retail and it's not fun. It can be either fast and stressful or slow and boring. I'm hoping I can figure out what I would actually enjoy doing as a job that pays well enough.

Anyway, keep it up. =)

Hey Orioto, long time fan here! I love your work. I had a question about your process and I've only recently come back to GAF so have a bit of catching up to do but I'm just wondering if you've ever done any tutorials on how you make your images? Is it completely hand drawn as in you create every element in the images yourself or do you use some assets from the games and change them to look like your water painting style?

I only ask this because some of the backgrounds look so genuinely genuine I'm stunned that it's a 2D drawing. I'm an aspiring artist myself, although I'm into a totally different thing (miniature painting) I feel like I could learn something from the way you use colour.

I'm also interested in how long each piece of work takes you to complete hours wise.

Hey uhh .. I know I'm just a junior but I've been lurking a long time and I've never felt great about the double standard of self promotion that this tread represents. Also the complaining comes across as disrespect for the high lenience you are given by the mods here. Ban me if this is unacceptable.

Orioto don't take a lack of replies as a sign of disinterest. But people are getting used to everything, even amazing art, and at one point, always replying with «Amazing work» doesn't seem very constructive. It's like repeating yourself like a broken record. It's the same for the pictures I post on Facebook, I used to get a lot of comments and praise, now people are used to it, and only like once in a while. It doesn't bother me as I'm doing it mainly for me, and I know I make some pretty good pictures now after all the good comments. On the other hand, it's true a photo doesn't take as much time as your work.
Have the sales slowed down?
Maybe you could also try more variety because while your style is great and you seem to have perfected it, the huge landscapes with tiny characters are getting a bit samey? I don't want to sound harsh, maybe it's also time to get out of your comfort zone? Using more dramatic viewing angles, more close-ups, different color palette than pastels, black & white?
Don't doubt yourself in any case.

Next week, FFIX

That is absolutely wonderful, Orioto. I wish the game had a tenth of this direction, and it is a fucking beautiful game.

As for the perceived lack of interest, I can understand that must be frustrating when you're pouring a piece of yourself into something. But just keep it in context: this thread is an epic success in comparison with ANY other non-OT thread on this board. I would echo the sentiment though that, while you're work is consistently tremendous - maybe it has gotten too... consistent? Would be nice to see you mix up your style a bit. Just a thought.

As always, keep up the wonderful work, GAF is a better place because of it.

This basically. When I have nothing more to say than "wow this looks nice, just like the last one" then I don't bother saying anything after the first couple of times. Getting overly defensive when someone criticizes the crankiness resulting from a lack of responses isn't really helping matters. It's not like this is a place where lots of new people from wherever suddenly land and can share their newfound appreciation like an actual blog or a social media account. I know seeing that little "nice!" "great job!" under a new thing you did feels good and all but you gotta have some perspective on the other end, too.
