North Korea Threatens Missile Strike on Guam (a United States Territory)

All these escalating talks of missile strikes right while I'm in the midst of reading "Swan Song." Don't do it, NK. Discipline and control is what makes the man.

A chick I use to talk to in college is from there and currently live there now. It must be hell questioning if this is just another empty threat when it is your life and family at risk.

Why would any country ever announce where it's going to attack? That said, I'm not sure why NK would want to provoke someone like Trump, the US military would make short work of the NK regime.
They are literally baiting Trump because with todays news they basically won since Trump would effectively have to sacrifice Seoul, Tokyo and US mainland cities if the US were to attack.

Kim knows he’s gonna lose open conflict so he got himself MAD capability

How did I do?

There must be a relevant Trump tweet, right?

How many times have they said the exact same thing? It's empty rhetoric. Stop losing your shit.

This. North Korea knows full well that an attack on a US territory can only end with their country turned to rubble. They can do a lot of damage to South Korea and Japan in the meantime, but their government does not survive any scenario that would follow from an attack on Guam or anyplace else. This is just bluster.

Reading between the lines, I take this to mean theyll consider hitting Guam if Trump orders a bombing of North Korea.
This is strategic deterrence on NK's part.

The issue here isn't if NK is actually planning to attack Guam or not, it's how Trump will reply to this threat.

Yo NK could totally wreak havoc down on Seoul at a moment's notice. They haven't because they aren't irrational. Similarly, they won't launch an ICBM at Guam.

Honestly if NK was ever going to irrationality do something Guam is a good target.
1. Huge American importance
2. small population
3. NK can still hide behind the threat of SK's destruction.

Think your post through again. If they attack Quam, NK no longer exists a short time later. It makes no more sense than NK attacking anywhere else.

Isn't this a straight-up declaration of war?

No, not at all.

If you don't think we don't have "off the shelf" plans to deal with other countries or contingencies... well, uh -- we do.

So, it's not a declaration of war, nor is it the announcement of hostilities... but it's not an affirmation of peace. Considering we're still technically at war with the DPRK, it's actually a little more interesting, because it's really just poking at the armistice.

What is Trump going to do, nuke Pyongyang, leading to fallout in the Yellow Sea, the Sea of Japan, Seoul and surrounding towns? They can level major cities to the ground, but to decapitate the regime, they'd have to go in...and that's when it gets super messy.

Attacking Guam is a declaration of war. Which means bombing of NK and ground troops into NK.

It won't be nukes.. Think Shock and Awe x10

I'm currently reading "one minute to midnight" about the Cuban missile crisis. I expect Trump to do the opposite of every smart thing Kennedy did.

Pyongyang can be leveled with ease with MOAB's and other weapons. No nukes are needed.

I feel like Japan was going through this same thought process 75 years ago
Except Japan didn’t have nukes which can reach guam in 15 and SF in 35 minutes

And as soon as you do that you have 100k artillery shells with chemical weapons raining down on Seoul and 800k north koreans storming the dmz

With Trump as President yes, that would definitely happen and should be retaliated against in some way.

However the discussion would definitely be there if the assured destruction of a city of 5million in a country of 50million is worth the retaliation for an island of less than 200k.

And all that is if Kim is dumb enough to try forcing his way to the big boy table.

Seriously. Between South Korea, Japan, Guam, and the carrier groups normally in the area, there's basically always enough conventional weaponry within range of North Korea to flatten the entire country ten times over.

Though, people are (perhaps rightfully) concerned Trump would want to use nuclear weapons for entirely impractical and stupid reasons (ego, poor understanding of diplomacy and negotiations, etc.).
