Nothing stops this train. PUBG surpasses [-46,278,233,054] concurrent users (!!!!)

Haven't touched the game in 2 months. It runs so horribly on my rig. Nothing but stuttering when I come across another person which makes trying to survive really difficult. Tried a few fixes but nothing satisfactory.

How many bought Goat Simulator? As you suggest, people may think it's a good game - but the overwhelming success has to be partly attributed to hype. Fear of missing out on being part of the cultural phenomenon drives PUBG. "I was logged on when it went 1 mil concurrent!" From the time I've spent with it, the game has merit, but the success is disproportionate to the quality of the product. You're welcome to feel differently.

Wasn't there some stats that were posted saying the average owner played 82+ hours and 20+ hours in the past 2 weeks? Sounds like it has it's hooks in a lot of people.

When's PUBG MLG world cup coming up?

Sky's the limit if they ever figure out how to make tournaments appealing to watch and free from potential collusion.

I'm almost certain I've pointed out to you before how PUBG i s n ' t 'Rust etc' and why that's a pretty shitty point of comparison but it's whatever

you see those numbers Durante posted for you above, though? Now there's no excuse anymore.
I'm not the one arguing against PUBG getting Gotys, but to butt into the discussion about popularity = Gotys. Dota 2 was placed 12. on Neogaf Goty voting and didn't get even one Goty award from the gaming media. It was nominated for the best multiplayer Bafta atleast but didn't win. And I believe we can better compare the popularity of PUBG and Dota 2 than Rust. Both are also multiplayer only PC games(for now). So I really don't think the popularity should be a huge indicator in getting plenty of awards. Sometimes being hugely popular and even being the best PVP game ever made isn't enough for Goty. So I wouldn't hold my hopes up for PUBG either.

I've never watched esports because I find them way too busy to follow, but I watched each day of the Gamescom tournament. It was very entertaining. The presentation needs some work. It was easy to miss action, but it was fun as hell to watch.

SteamSpy has pretty consistently underestimated PUBG when compared to announcements from BlueHole, so it's probably well past 9M at this point.
It will be interesting to see what Spy is at when they make the 10M announcement.

It was fun since it was the first big tournament but that will drop off quick unless they find a new system specific to this game. At the very least they need to work the cameras so we see more of the action and not just follow one guy looting while there's a massive firefight in another location. The game will always be huge when it comes to individual streamers but long term tournament appeal needs a lot of work.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a smaller scale map built for like 30-40 people just so they can get matches going quicker and not have hour long downtimes for 30 minute matches.

Because that makes it a very notable game. It's approaching Call of Duty on 360 levels of concurrent numbers.

Right now this game's concurrent player numbers trumps Call of Duty on its most popular platform (PS4).

It's probably past that point in terms of consistency. Those are launch numbers and tend to drop fast shortly after well below 1 million. I don't remember what CoD tended to stabilize at for a couple of months but Halo 3 was stable at about 200k-400k for a while. I believe some CoD on PS4 (BO3?) also hit 1 million+ at launch. PUBG is more impressive since it's still growing IMO.

Isn't that because SteamSpy's info has a 3 day delay, and with a game like PUBG, which growth is insane, those 3 days really matter?

Wow, some people are really having trouble rationalizing this game’s success?

It’s an amazing game, easily my GOTY, I can only see this phenomenon growing.

That and also, as I remember Galyokin saying, PUBG is a game that quite a number of its new buyers are also new STEAM users, so their profiles are a little harder to parse. So not only Steam users are buying PUBG, but PUBG is bringing new users to Steam itself.

Cause its coming to Xbox first and not PS4. If it was a timed Sony exclusive it'd be the greatest game to grace us in a decade.

If this is really it, people need to grow the fuck up. Shit is petty. PUBG is a good story for gaming and the industry in GENERAL, and you have people that can't enjoy/celebrate it because of fucking console wars.

I think it's less because it's an Xbox game

and more because it's a wildly successful PC game in a world where there's plenty of ignorant console gamers who assume that big-name console games are the default games. The important games. The ones that matter. The ones 'everyone' knows about, the only ones worth being hyped over. Everything else is an aside that should know its place, and that's how these people always justified their ignorance toward PC gaming as a whole.

I do feel differently as do millions of people. Maybe you just have bad taste?

Bad things make shit loads of money all the time, just because a lot of people enjoy them doesn't make something good.
Sure. but we're not talking quantity alone

We're talking quantity + consensus from repeated comparisons of technical/mechanical elements to the standards and high bars in the medium. Quality may be a subjective measure, but it's also quantified through comparison. For example, cinematography in film. You can tell when something has generic boring cinematography and frustrating choppy editing, and when something has great carefully-crafted cinematography and smart editing, mainly because of the tenets and foundations of those arts and the heights set by the best in the medium.

So you can say "a lot of people liking something doesn't make it good" as a retort or you can look at the context and why people like something, and how those elements compare to other works in its genre and medium as a whole

It would be interesting to learn how closely the number of people dismissive about the game in this thread matches the number of people who never played it.

I think this point is generally forgotten about or undersold.

When a game can move the needle on Steam user uptake, an ecosystem that already sees incredible rates of growth and is already considered the de facto PC marketplace, then you know it's really something.

PUBG is a game that's bringing people in. Bringing them into Steam, maybe even bringing them into PC Gaming. It's growing the market, and that's a rare and special thing.

Isn't that how it usually goes? They dismiss it, hence they don't play it. Doesn't stop them calling the game shit nonetheless.

It is crazy that this game brings out such vocal negativity in people that haven't even played it. I guess cuz it's just the new big popular game.

I guess. But still, the claim that the game is popular merely on some sort of meme power and not because people enjoy it is particularly hilarious.

PUBG is fun and I feel bad for those who write it off as a meme fotm game -- you're all missing out!

I don' think it's that.

I mean we're on PC. We got a bunch of shit to play and only so many hours in the day. It's cool to know another great game is out there, but my Steam + Battle.net + Origin + GoG Galaxy + Uplay + Arc + Epic game library backlog total is at like 300 games. I'm pretty sure that I am the standard rather than the exception.

Not even sure of what you are trying to say.

Fascinating game. Came out of nowhere for me back when it got announced for the XBOX. Kinda hope it comes to PS4 at some point.

This and Darkwood will be the first two games I buy when I... eventually... get a gaming PC I can use. I didn't know much about the game at first, thought it was just another survival sim, but 30 minute matches and no bullshit "eat food every three milliseconds to not die sounds like it might be right up my alley. Not entirely sure since I'm never one for "social gaming" but apparently solo's quite good, and with so many players I'm bound to get a few good matches.

Why are some people so mad at this game's success? Console and/or Zelda fanboys mad that a multiplayer only PC exclusive (for now at least) is the most popular game of the year and will easily grab the GOTY award?

The salt, jesus.

"Console and/or Zelda fanboys."

lol

Man, I can already tell this year's GOTY thread is going to be fun. As an Automata-stan I'll just be watching from the sidelines.

There's no way GAF GOTY will be anything but Zelda. Automata has my vote as well, though!

Gaf is mad because for first time ever game with good gameplay is under heavy discussion, instead games with good gfx and story.
It cant be good game then.

PUBG made star working on a gaming PC. Been console gaming for 20 years lol.

I made a Steam account before but PUBG is the first game that actually makes me use that account.

I always do well (top 5) when I have a shitty loadout. Whenever I have badass gear (maxed out SKS/Kar with 8x and all lvl 3 armor, or that one time I got the AWP from a crate), I end up dying pretty quickly. I guess its because I'm so tempted to use the badass gear and take more risks.

I felt like that until I actually tried PUBG and now literally everything has taken a backseat (Zelda BOTW and Overwatch included)

While PUBG is damn great, instead of a thread for every milestone, a thread that is constantly updated with said milestones would be better. Maybe that's why the title was changed(?).

Heck, every thread begins with the same "well deserved, congratulations, my GOTY"...and ends the same "meme game, I don't get it, it doesn't run on ny rig".

So is not like a new the thread brings new (or any) discussion.

This isn't any less ridiculous than the comments you are trying to make fun of.

So, is the game basically the human vs human element of Day Z put into a sort of battle royale/arcade mode?

Pretty much exactly.

100 players, either solo, duo or 3-4 person squads.

Drop out of a plane on an 8km by 8km map. Grab loot and then head towards an ever shrinking circle.

It's even more streamlined than that. There's no other "survival" aspect than surviving enemy players. No infections, hunger, cold etc.

Edit: Oh this was already clarified.
