Nintendo to shut down Wii shopping channel on 2019/01/31

I'm baffled that the news of VC shutting down has people scrambling to buy more games. If anything them shutting down the service, and locking your purchases down to Wii/Wii U is all the reason for me to avoid it entirely.

What?

I'm never going to disconnect my Wii U, it's my favorite system ever. It's totally worthwhile to download as much as I can onto it.

From the top of my head:

Hydroventure/Fluidity
Excitebike: World Rally
Motoheroz
Swords and Soldiers
Toki Tori
Lost Winds
Bonsai Barber
MaBoShi: The three Shape arcade
You, Me and the Cubes
Art Style series (Light Trax/Dotstream etc)
Bit Trip series (pointer controls)
FF: My Life as a King
Space Invaders Get Even
FF: My Life as a Darklord
Contra Rebirth
Gradius Rebirth
Star Soldier R
Muscle March
Castlevania Rebirth
Ace Attorney Trilogy (most relaxing/lazy way to play the game, 60fps)
Eco Shooter: Plant 530
Ivy the Kiwi

I’m sure others can add to this list. We should do a thread in the run-up to the closure like this one: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1286360

Solid list but

Ivy the Kiwi has a retail release
Bit Trip games received a compilation on Wii
Toki Tori, Lost Winds and Swords and Soldiers Received ports for lots of places, even if the wii is still the best place for Lost Winds.

The lack of any Fast Racing League mention in this thread is disturbing:

What's the biggest SD size the WiiU in Wii Mode will recognize? Are mini SD cards, combined with adapters, also recognized? I think I'll be aiming for a sizable number of games to download and I don't think my 4BG will be adequate enough for the job.

Yeah, no problem.

At least Nintendo had their "games can't be bigger than 40 megs" policy so even if you would only buy the biggest WiiWare games you would be able to get at least 8 of them before running out of space :)

The game sizes are shown as "blocks" on the Wii and I think the biggest WiiWare games take up somewhere between 300-400 blocks.
The smallest VC games are somewhere between 10-20 blocks.

EDIT:
Oh, and running the games directly from the SD card requires the system to have at least the running game's worth of space left as it always loads the game to Wii's memory before running it from an SD card.
So if you have tons of games filling the Wii's space and have tons of games on the SD card be prepared to leave some extra space available in the Wii Mode internal memory too if you want to run them directly from the SD card.

EDIT2:
Oh man, I still remember the days when the SD cards weren't an option...
And when they became an option, you weren't able to play games directly from them.
But later that became possible too, but only with having some space left on the Wii too.

This is all good to know when managing memory options, thank you.

A huge number of these games are digital only, and exclusive to the Wii.

This is where homebrew comes in. It will be easy for people to play all of these games for years to come, even after Nintendo shuts down the shop.

I meant digital when physical releases are available. Homebrew is the way to go for sure.

It doesn't make me put much faith in any digital platform with Nintendo when you can't even download the game you purchased. I can understand from the business perspective of course, but damn, it doesn't stop it from sucking.

Is there anyway to back up purchases? I recently had my Wii's SD card break so I had to manually re-download all my games onto a different SD card. I'd be super scared if that happened again after they closed the store. I own tons of VC games on Wii.
Just put the SD card into a PC and copy the files onto there. Some of the contents of the SD card will only work on the Wii in which it created on (which in this case includes things from the Wii shop, saves will work on any Wii provided the game in question has been played at least once).

You can be fancy with homebrew and back up the entire flash memory of the Wii as a failsale in case the Wii itself were to break but using that flash memory on a different Wii is possible but non trivial (it also breaks the Wii Shop functionality but after January 2019 that doesn't matter much).

Heh I should go boot up my wii, and see what I have to dig up.

I see you can possibly transfer stuff to the WiiU?
I remember loads of people did this, found out the Wii U display is awful for their VC games (no more 240p goodness) and couldn't transfer them back.

Never did get around to buying the Phantasy Star games. Oh well, guess I could just pull out my PS3 and play them on my Sonic ultimate genesis collection disc if I really star jonesing for it. Plus I'll get nifty frames and save states to boot.

What games on Wiiware are worth preserving.

Its a motherfucking crime that Castlevania Adventure Rebirth is still WiiWare exclusive. And after this shutdown it should be punishable by jail.

Konami. Please re-release this game! And while you're at it how about Bloodlines too which is only legally available via a Genesis cartridge!

I am interested in Wii Ware exclusives, so far that's
My Life as a King
My Life as a Darklord
Me, You, and the Cubes
Konami ReBirth games
I think there was a Pokemon game (which wasn't very good but was at the time one of the only ways to get Mew in the main games?)

What else?

Good luck securing all the licenses necessary to release multiple games in one package when they're not first-party Nintendo.

It's easy to do it for Mario, Kirby and Zelda. What about Chrono Trigger? Final Fantasy? Breath of Fire? All the smaller franchises with 2 or 3 games? How far in do you think they have to go to get the entire VC fragmented into little bundles that they can release physically?

Basically for most of them they'd have to re-release them as single physical games - again, not viable.

Also the SNES classic is irrelevant as it's not a console, but a system designed with the goal of playing a fixed list of old games. This seems to be Nintendo's idea of VC now though.

WiiShop Channel is an odd case, as it was a stand-alone, sterile ecosystem. As the 3DS, Wii U and Switch eShop share the same infrastructure going forward we shouldn't have this problem again, and the same thing can be said for PSStore (PS3+PSP+Vita+PS4) and the 360+One ecosystem.

In hindsight Nintendo should have included everything from the WiiShop in the Wii U eShop, which is what they did for the DSiShop.

I think your right. The fact that those other stores also contain downloadable versions of every single retail release day and date with the retail versions of those games makes me hopeful that Nintendo never shuts them down.

WiiWare, in comparison, had a far more limited amount of downloadable software.

I'm surprised it lasted this long. A LOT longer than I would have expected.

HOWEVER, what I'm surprised by is them shutting down re-downloads as well. Only serves to confirm the fears of those who are against digital games. Bad move. Really bad move.

End of an era. I'll need to take a last look at what's up and pick up some more VC titles before it goes down. Glad they're giving us 15 months advance notice on this.

I'm honestly surprised they have not already, especially when so many former 3rd party Wii exclusives have long since found there way to other platforms.

Since I won't be homebrewing my system...

Once you move games to an SD card, can you move them back to the system? Just wondering, so if I backup my SD card if I want ti move them back to the system for whatever reason...

Also, what's a recommended SD card size? I currently have an 8GB but deciding if I want to go up to 16. I hate the block system of game size, and if I'll be getting a bunch of Wiiware titles etc, trying to figure out how big would be in the equivalent of KB/MB/GB size.

If it helps your decision Nintendo had a 40MB cap on wiiware games so there is no game thats higher than that.

Funny story, (Not that funny) a few weeks ago I hooked up my Wii again and started using it for GameCube playback (Because I cant find my GameCube AC adapter right now) and had to go onto the Shop Channel to update some of my software (Ugh the days before automatic updates) and I noticed I had like 600 points left on my account. So I spent 500 of them to download StarTropics. I figured I might as well since I already spent the money. Of course now I have 100 points on there I can't do anything with. Oh well. A dollar lost I guess. (Glad points are a dead system now. Just let me spend the money directly!)

I need to find my GCN AC adapter and get a SD card that works with the Wii and transfer my stuff to my Wii U so I can retire my Wii to the closet. Then I need to upgrade all my eligible Wii VC games to Wii U VC versions. (The neglected Wii U VC compared to the amazing Wii VC was really sad to see.) I still haven't been able to transfer my shit because I don't have a SD card big enough. I don't need SD cards so all I have is a 512MB card from back when I actually had a physical camera. I never got anything bigger except for two 2GB MicroSD cards with an adapter that came with some old phones. But for some reason I can't figure out how to make them work properly and while my Wii U was able to write the Transfer Tool to the card, the Wii is unable to write any data to the card. So I'm stuck.

All I really want is a fully working and thriving Virtual Console on the Switch with every single game Nintendo can get the rights to. All I want is to be able to finally have all those games with me legally! It's like our dream, Nintendo. Just give it to us! And don't let it get stagnant like you did with the Wii U.

The Wii VC was dumb in that the games weren't attached to a person, just the console. So when you got a Wii U, which came with a Wii built-in, you couldn't just hop in and download all your shit right then and there. It was so poorly thought out. And the worst part is the transfer tool is completely unnecessary, they could have just given you more options, like an option to just make a journal of all the VC games you own on your Wii, attach it to a username (Your Wii U account) and then log in on your Wii U under Wii mode and have it just download all those games from the shop channel without trouble.

Until it dies.
Consoles can live a long time.

My GameCube still works.

I hooked up my PlayStation 2 Slim the other day thinking it was dead and it worked perfectly.

My Xbox (Original) which sat in a non-climate controlled storage unit for almost a decade booted up perfectly the other day. (Though it's having trouble reading half my game discs and I'm really really sad.)

Most of my various other consoles still work too. My PlayStation (Original), Sega Saturn, I'm sure if I hooked them back up my Genesis 1 and 2, Sega CD, 32X, Master System, Jaguar and other consoles would probably still work too.

My Xbox 360 however died years ago. But Nintendo has a fairly good track record, so I could see a Wii or Wii U lasting a while.

As a rule of thumb, if you leave about 320-350 open blocks on the Wii's internal memory, you will ALWAYS be able to run even the largest games off of the SD card.

Also if you get really crazy with it, regardless of SD card size, the SD card menu for any given SD card can never display/access more than 240 channels at a time.

And this all the more dumb considering Nintendo STILL has no VC on the Switch, or even announcement of it. Things like NES/SNES CE, and arcade achieves are great in their own right, but a replacement for the VC.

Can you also switch your Dolphin Wii to the Japanese Wii shop and add Japanese Wii points without too much fuss? (I know on a region-modded Wii you can even use American credit cards to make Japanese Wii purchases). There are many many games that will never be cheaper to buy anywhere else on the Japanese Wii shop so it would be great to have that as another option for now.

I have no idea—I've never played around with region switching a Wii. If it's possible on a real console I suspect it's possible on Dolphin as well, but I couldn't tell you more than that.

Yes, as long as it's the same system. IE, I can move games from my Wii to an SD card and back to my Wii, but I can't ever move them to a friend's Wii.

I feel like they're gonna take even longer now that the stupid NES/SNES Classics exist with all the games we all want to be able to play on our Switch because they won't want to cannibalize the sales of a product people can't even find already.

Give me all that stuff on my Switch! Fuck the Classic. I want Star Fox and Yoshi's Island on the Switch. Fuck, I wanted both games on the goddamned Wii. Now we know they're possible and there's no limitations, put them where they deserve to be!

Also EarthBound, EarthBound Beginnings and Mother 3 because we KNOW you want to give it to us. So just give it to us! Before the Switch reaches its EOL. (God, I hope the Switch never reaches EOL, and that whatever comes after it is fully BC with it. As well as whatever comes after that.)

I'm really not sure what the concern about Wiis and Wii Us stopping working is re: this. The most failure-prone part is the disc drive, and you don't need the disc drive to play digitally downloaded games. That's...kind of the point.

I would love a version of this exclusives list people are compiling that removes the games that are also available in good form on PSN, XBLA or PC. Bonus points for making special note of things like Ys where the old version is substantially different but still worth playing.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nintendo/comments/738bj5/complete_list_of_virtual_console_games_that_are/

then someone can get started on the monumental task of the Japanese VC list, but baby steps.

Definitely a good idea, but yeah the list needs to be trimmed down to exclusive stuff from all consoles, not just Nintendo ones. Also maybe an asterisk to show that the game is available via compilation disks (Samurai Shodown, Sonic Genesis Collection, etc.)
